The story of Christmas in Swansea
On Christmas Eve 1934, twelve singers paraded a Mari Lwyd, a horse's skull under a white sheet, around Mumbles. Swansea has its own old Christmas stories, and a few new ones, like a Winterland beside the museum.
Twelve singers and a horse skull in Mumbles, Christmas Eve 1934
On Christmas Eve 1934 a Mari Lwyd, a horse's skull on a pole under a white sheet, was paraded around Mumbles with twelve singers. Iorwerth Peate described it in a 1935 article. The earliest known account of the custom anywhere dates from 1798, and it was most popular between 1850 and 1920, mostly in South Wales.
A party would sing at a door and ask to come in. The household answered with insults and challenges, and the singing carried on until one side gave in. Then the party was let in and given food and drink.
A Victorian fayre, a nine-sculpture ice trail and Santa's switch-on in 2025
Swansea's 2025 season began with the Victorian Christmas Fayre from 20 to 23 November. The Christmas Parade followed on Sunday 23 November, when Santa switched on the city's lights. Waterfront Winterland opened at Museum Park on 21 November and ran to 4 January, with a new Christmas Tree Maze. The Christmas Market filled Oxford Street and Portland Street from 29 November to 22 December. Fire and Ice on 6 and 7 December had a nine-sculpture ice trail.
This year the parade is on Sunday 22 November 2026, and Winterland opens on 19 November.
A pillow for a horse, Hen Galan and a front parlour on Cwmdonkin Drive
Around 1935 a group of boys in Swansea carried a pillow in place of a horse's skull. The season ran from Christmas Day to Twelfth Night and on to Hen Galan, the Old New Year, on 13 January. The National Waterfront Museum holds Gŵyl y Mari Lwyd on 10 January 2027, from 12 to 3pm, and entry is free.
At the Dylan Thomas Birthplace, 5 Cwmdonkin Drive, A Child's Christmas in Wales is performed in the front parlour on 17 and 19 December 2026.
