The story of Christmas in Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough went from a farm of 25 people in 1801 to a town of 7,600 by 1851, so its Christmas is a modern, town-centre one. Each November Centre Square fills with a stage, rides and a countdown to the lights.
527 acres of farmland, a Quaker port and no ancient Yule customs
Middlesbrough has no medieval Christmas customs to point to, because the town barely existed before 1829. That year Joseph Pease and a group of Quaker businessmen bought the farmstead and its estate, about 527 acres, to build a coal port on the Tees. The first house went up on West Street in April 1830, and the population grew from 40 in 1829 to 7,600 by 1851.
What families know today is a modern, town-centre tradition. The Christmas lights go on at Centre Square, with a stage, food stalls, fairground rides and fireworks, and in 2026 that is Sunday 22 November.
A ten-metre cat that purred and a 5pm switch-on in 2025
The 2025 Christmas weekend ran on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 November. A new pop-up light festival, Shine On, Boro, opened both evenings from 4:30pm to 9:30pm and was free, with five installations around Centre Square and the Town Hall. One was a 10m cat that snored, purred and swished its tail.
On the Sunday, Santa led a parade from the Town Hall at 2pm along Corporation Road, Linthorpe Road, Grange Road and Albert Road. The lights came on at 5pm, with market stalls and rides open from 12pm to 9pm. Teesside Live reported that thousands came.
Ironopolis, a gondola bridge and a village of 25 people
Before the town, the spot was a small farm. In 1801 it had a population of 25. By the mid-1870s Middlesbrough made about a third of the nation's pig iron and earned the nickname Ironopolis.
The Tees Transporter Bridge opened on 17 October 1911. A gondola hanging under the frame carries up to 200 people, or nine cars, across the river in about 90 seconds. The bridge is Grade II* listed but has not run since 2019 because of safety concerns. Captain Cook Square, the shopping centre, opened in 1999.
