The story of Christmas in Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes was designated a new town on 23 January 1967, with about 40,000 people already living in the area, so its Christmas traditions are young ones. The lights switch-on in the city centre now ends with fireworks, and a Santa parade opens the grotto at centre:mk.

A 1967 new town and the lights on Midsummer Boulevard

Milton Keynes was designated a new town on 23 January 1967, aiming for a population of 250,000. About 40,000 people lived in the area then. The 2021 census counted 264,349 in the urban area, and the borough gained city status in August 2022. That makes Christmas here a modern habit built around the city centre rather than an old market square.

The main moment is the lights switch-on along Midsummer Boulevard, Midsummer Place and 12th Street, started when Father Christmas presses the plunger.

Rock choir, fairground rides and fireworks over the city centre

The switch-on on Saturday 22 November 2025 was free and outdoors in the city centre. Fairground rides and comedy elves started at 2pm. The main show began at 4pm, with children from Christ the Sower Primary School, the 65-member Milton Keynes Rock Choir and singer Ollie Corbett, hosted by David Allen. Father Christmas pressed the plunger and a fireworks display followed at about 5:15pm. The lights now include a new Christmas tree outside Milton Keynes Theatre and MK Gallery. The event was held at The Point car park.

Concrete Cows, a codebreaking park and a railway works

The original Concrete Cows are at Milton Keynes Museum, and they are among the city's best-known landmarks. The museum in Wolverton sits in a town that was built in the 19th century for workers at the railway works, which made engines and carriages for the London and North Western Railway. Bletchley Park, famous for its codebreakers, is part of the city today. Around a quarter of Milton Keynes is parkland or woodland, and the Peace Pagoda by Willen Lake was the first of its kind built in Europe.

Traditions today

  • Lights switch-on: Father Christmas presses the plunger on Midsummer Boulevard, Midsummer Place and 12th Street. In 2025 it was on 22 November with fairground rides, a rock choir and fireworks.
  • Santa Parade at centre:mk: A free parade down Midsummer Arcade, starting at Door 1 in front of M&S Foodhall. In 2026 it is on Friday 20 November at 5:30pm.
  • Willen on Ice: An outdoor ice rink at Willen Lake. In 2026 it runs from 21 November to 3 January 2027, with family sessions for the youngest skaters.
  • Grottos in the city: Santa's Grotto at Milton Keynes Museum runs on Fridays to Sundays from 4 to 20 December 2026 at £16 per child. Bletchley Park also has a Vintage Christmas Grotto from 5 to 23 December.
  • Pantomime at Milton Keynes Theatre: Sleeping Beauty runs from 5 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, with Alexandra Burke as Carabosse.
  • Gulliver's Land Christmas: A winter wonderland with Santa's Grotto and an Elf Workshop gift for each child, from 22 November to 23 December 2026.

A fact for kids

The original Concrete Cows of Milton Keynes live at Milton Keynes Museum in Wolverton.
