The story of Christmas in Southend-on-Sea
Southend-on-Sea has the world's longest pleasure pier, and its Christmas is built around the seafront. Adventure Island started as a seaside garden in 1918, and Prittlewell Priory hosts Father Christmas visits each December.
From a Sunken Garden in 1918 to a Christmas park beside the pier
Southend's Christmas sits on the seafront. Adventure Island began in 1918 as Sunken Gardens, a seaside garden that added a few children's rides in the 1920s, and in 1976 the Miller family built it into the amusement park. Its Christmas event is Wonderland, held inside Funtopia next to Southend Pier. The pier itself, the world's longest pleasure pier, opened as a wooden pier in June 1830 and as an iron pier in August 1889. Each November the council's Christmas in the City takes over the High Street for the lights switch-on.
Thousands at the 2025 switch-on and Father Christmas at the Priory
A report published on 16 November 2025 said thousands flocked to Southend for the big lights switch-on. On 13 and 14 December Father Christmas visited Prittlewell Priory, with an activity trail, crafts and storytelling; under-threes went free and booking was essential. Santa's Space Day on 21 December brought planetarium shows and meteorite handling to Southend Central Museum. Council car parks were free every Sunday in December, and New Year's Eve had two free fireworks displays, one at 6pm for families. This year Wonderland runs on selected days from 28 November to 24 December.
A train that runs the whole pier
Southend Pier Railway opened in the early 1890s as the first pier railway in the UK, and it runs the length of the pier, about 1.34 miles, every day the pier is open. Southend's twin town is Sopot in Poland, since 1999. Dame Helen Mirren was born in Leigh-on-Sea. The Palace Hotel, built in 1901 as the Metropole, once had 200 bedrooms and was the only five-star hotel on England's south-east coast.
Traditions today
- Christmas in the City: Southend High Street hosts a free full day of festive fun and the lights switch-on, listed for 14 November 2026.
- Wonderland at Adventure Island: Christmas inside Funtopia next to Southend Pier, on selected days from 28 November to 24 December 2026.
- The Cliffs Pavilion panto: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs plays from 12 December 2026 to 3 January 2027.
- A new Nutcracker at the Palace Theatre: The Nutcracker: Magic and Mischief is a musical retelling of Hoffmann's 1816 story, on from 16 to 27 December 2026.
- Father Christmas at The Royals: A grotto at The Royals Shopping Centre from 14 to 24 November 2026.
- Priory and museum festive visits: In 2025 Prittlewell Priory held Father Christmas visits and lantern tours, and the museum held Santa's Space Day.
A fact for kids
Southend Pier is about 1.34 miles long, and a little train runs all the way along it. It is the longest pleasure pier in the world.
