The story of Christmas in Luton

Luton once had more than 400 hat factories, and the town marks 150 years as a borough in 2026. Its Christmas starts with a free lights switch-on outside the town hall, then adds reindeer, a snow globe and a Stockwood light trail.

Over 400 hat factories and a borough since 1876

Luton was a major centre of English hat-making. Wardown House says more than 400 hat factories worked in the town during the 1800s, mostly making straw hats, and only nine are still active. Luton became a municipal borough on 25 February 1876, so 2026 is its 150th year, with more than 150 events and heritage trails planned.

The town-centre Christmas is run by Luton Council with Luton BID, and the lights switch-on is its anchor. The hat story also shows in the town's Christmas: on Saturday 12 December 2026, Christmas in Hat Gardens fills Bute Street from 12pm to 4pm, with a post box for letters to Santa.

A 6pm switch-on, Santa's Sleigh and 20 ward trees in 2025

The 2025 switch-on was on Saturday 22 November. It was free, with music and street entertainment from 11am and the switch-on at 6pm. Paddington appeared outside the Town Hall between 2pm and 6.30pm, and families decorated baubles at Luton Point.

On 29 November Santa's Sleigh stopped on Market Hill with a snow machine for photos and elves. Twenty new community Christmas trees, one in each ward, were lit between 25 November and 11 December, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and Luton's Fairness Taskforce.

One of Europe's biggest carriage collections

Stockwood Discovery Centre, on London Road, holds one of Europe's largest carriage collections. It also has walled gardens, sensory gardens and a big outdoor play area, and entry and parking are free. In December the gardens become a light trail called Stockwood Illuminated, and Santa sees families there in timed slots.

Wardown House sits in Wardown Park and is a Grade II listed building. Its Regiment Gallery tells the hat story, and it is a short bus ride from the town centre.

Traditions today

  • Lights switch-on: A free day of live acts and characters outside the town hall, with the switch-on at 6pm. In 2026 it is on Saturday 21 November.
  • Neighbourhood trees: In 2025 each of the 20 wards got a new community tree, with switch-ons from 25 November to 11 December.
  • Christmas in Hat Gardens: A Bute Street afternoon with a post box for letters to Santa. In 2026 it is on Saturday 12 December, 12pm to 4pm.
  • Market Hill reindeer and snow globe: Real reindeer on 12 December and a giant snow globe with carols on 19 December in 2026.
  • Stockwood Illuminated: A garden light trail at Stockwood Discovery Centre, from 11 to 31 December 2026.
  • Adventures in Wonderland: A family show at the Hat Factory Arts Centre, 5 to 23 December 2026, at 11.30am and 2pm.

A fact for kids

Luton once had more than 400 hat factories, and most of them made straw hats.
