The story of Christmas in Oxford

Oxford's best-known Christmas story involves a student, a wild boar and a book of Aristotle. Today the city opens the season with a November Light Festival, lanterns on Rose Hill and a panto in West Oxford Wood.

A student, a wild boar and the Queen's College Christmas feast

The Queen's College was founded in 1341, and its Boar's Head Gaudy is held on the Saturday before Christmas. It is a feast for old members of the college, and it began as a Christmas dinner for students who could not travel home to northern England between terms.

A legend goes with it. A student reading Aristotle in Shotover Forest met a wild boar, popped his book into its open mouth and shouted "Graecum est". The tale was written down in Husk's Songs of the Nativity in 1868. The best-known Boar's Head Carol text follows a version printed in 1521.

Lanterns on Rose Hill and Santa in the Covered Market, November 2025

The Oxford Christmas Light Festival ran from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 November 2025. Its announced highlights included a Victorian-style market on Broad Street, a lantern parade in Rose Hill, a light trail in Cutteslowe Park, Santa at the Covered Market and a decorated Christmas Light Bus.

The festival has run every year since 2009. It started as a one-day event and grew into a weekend with more than 25 local cultural partners, and Oxford City Council funds it. In 2026 it takes place from 13 to 15 November, and the free Cutteslowe Light Trail is on Saturday 14 November from 4pm.

Panto in West Oxford Wood and lanterns made in a museum

The Oxford Playhouse panto for 2026 is Snow White, set in West Oxford Wood, and it runs from 20 November to 3 January 2027. The Playhouse guide says five and over, with free lap tickets for babies under 18 months.

Across the city, The North Wall stages Alice in Winter Wonderland from 28 November. In 2024 the West Oxford Pantomime Association ran a lantern parade for West Oxford's part of the festival. In 2026 the Museum of Oxford lets children make a lantern for £2 on 14 November.

Traditions today

  • Boar's Head Gaudy: The Queen's College holds a feast for old members on the Saturday before Christmas, tied to the Boar's Head legend.
  • Oxford Christmas Light Festival: A November weekend of light trails, workshops and markets. In 2026 it runs from 13 to 15 November.
  • Victorian Christmas Market on Broad Street: A free market with live music, artisan traders and street entertainment, from 12 to 15 November in 2026.
  • Lantern parades: Rose Hill and West Oxford have held lantern parades as part of the festival. In 2026 Rose Hill's parade leaves at 5pm on 14 November.
  • The Playhouse panto: Oxford Playhouse stages a family pantomime each winter. In 2026 it is Snow White, from 20 November to 3 January 2027.

A fact for kids

A legend says an Oxford student once pushed his Aristotle book down the throat of a wild boar, and a Christmas feast at Queen's College still remembers it.

Questions about Christmas in Oxford

How did the Boar's Head Gaudy at Queen's College start?

It began as a Christmas dinner for Queen's College students who could not travel home to northern England between terms. Today the Boar's Head Gaudy is a feast for old members of the college, held on the Saturday before Christmas. The college was founded in 1341, so the dinner sits inside a very long Oxford story.

What is the legend of the boar's head in Oxford?

The legend says a student was reading Aristotle in Shotover Forest when a wild boar charged at him. He popped the book into the boar's open mouth and cried "Graecum est". Husk wrote the story down in 1868 in Songs of the Nativity. It is a legend, not a recorded event.

How old is the Boar's Head Carol?

The carol is described as 15th century. The version most often sung today follows one printed in 1521 by Wynkyn de Worde in Christmasse Carolles. It is linked to the Oxford legend, and Queen's College still holds an annual Boar's Head Gaudy with a Boar's Head dinner.
