The story of Christmas in Ipswich

Ipswich's Christmas centres on Christchurch Mansion, a Tudor house in the park that Felix Cobbold saved from demolition in 1894. The town lights go on at The Cornhill each November, and two theatres put on a panto.

A Tudor house saved from demolition in 1894

Ipswich's best-known festive setting is Christchurch Mansion, a Tudor brick house in Christchurch Park. Edmund Withypoll built it around 1548 to 1550 on the grounds of the Priory of the Holy Trinity. The Devereux family rebuilt the upper floors around 1670, and Claude Fonnereau bought it in 1734. In 1894 Felix Cobbold bought the house to save it from demolition and gave it to the town. The town received it in February 1895, and the council bought the central part of the park that April. Entry is free, with no booking needed.

Lights on 16 November, Father Christmas in the Mansion

The 2025 switch-on was on Sunday 16 November at The Cornhill, with entertainment from 4pm to 7.30pm and the lights going on at 6.45pm. Mayor Stefan Long switched them on, and the cast of the Regent Theatre pantomime Cinderella performed. Ipswich Town Hall held a Christmas Fayre on 21 and 22 November, with Santa's Grotto at an extra cost, and children aged 14 and under went in free. Families could also meet Father Christmas at Christchurch Mansion on 20 and 21 December for £12 per child. The 2026 switch-on date is not yet confirmed.

Five stage shows and a park trail

Ipswich has several theatres, and in 2025 each had its own festive show. The Regent ran Cinderella from 12 to 31 December. The New Wolsey ran Beauty and the Beast from 21 November to 17 January 2026. Eastern Angles staged Treasure Island until 3 January, Red Rose Chain put on Alice in Wonderland from 2 December to 4 January, and DanceEast showed The Magic Flute for ages 5 and up. Illuminate Ipswich, a light trail in Christchurch Park, ran from 15 November 2025 to 4 January 2026. In 2026 the Regent stages Snow White.

Traditions today

  • Regent Theatre panto: Snow White runs at the Regent, 3 St Helen's Street, from 12 to 31 December 2026, with 24 performances.
  • New Wolsey Rock'n'Roll panto: The New Wolsey's Cinderella runs from 20 November 2026 to 16 January 2027.
  • Christchurch Mansion: The free Tudor house in Christchurch Park hosted Father Christmas visits on 20 and 21 December in 2025.
  • Town Hall Christmas Fayre: Ipswich Town Hall held a Christmas Fayre on 21 and 22 November 2025, with a Santa's Grotto at extra cost.

A fact for kids

Christchurch Mansion has a stone carved with the year 1549, so the house was already standing nearly 500 years ago.
