“This is one book my daughter requests to reread multiple times in one sitting… the perfect read-aloud for the dog-loving child.”
The story inside
All aboard! Rally the corgi is going to see his grand-paw-rents.
He packs his turtle, his green bone, and his yellow ball. Dad boosts him up the big stairs. Kids reach down to pet him. He leaves a trail of furry corgi glitter down the aisle, watches the California coast roll by from San Diego to Orange County, splits a pretzel with Mom, and shakes hands with Mr. Conductor.
Then the train goes into a tunnel. The window goes dark. Rally is scared.
Then the light comes, and the people he loves are waiting on the platform.
Why kids ask for it again
- The rhymes. A five-minute read-aloud toddlers chant along with, and the bedtime story they ask for again the same night.
- The art. Babies stare at the watercolor pages long before they follow the words. Nothing in this book was made by a computer.
- The tunnel page. A gentle book about feeling scared of the dark and being brave anyway: the dark part is short, and someone you love is on the other side.
- It grows with them. The colors at 1, the train sounds at 2, retelling the trip at 4, reading it to you at 6, and reading it on their own at 8.

Everything in it is real
- Rally was our real Pembroke Welsh corgi.
- The ride is the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. The Spanish-style station on the first pages is the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego, and the ocean outside Rally’s window is the coast at San Clemente.
- The tunnel page started with a real photo of Rally sitting scared in our car during a rainstorm.
- Illustrator Leslie Dunn painted every page by hand in real watercolor.
Why I wrote it
My mom, Deb, talked about this book for years. She had the title, the story, even the word “grand-paw-rents”: our corgi, Rally, riding the train to see his grandparents. She died in 2021, during the pandemic, before she could write it and before our first child was born. About a year later, I lost my dad too.
So I wrote the book she described. My kids never got to meet their grandparents, and I wanted them to know them the way Rally knows his: as the people waiting at the end of the line. It is dedicated to them.
For a long time I couldn’t talk about why I wrote it. Now my kids are learning to read, and I’m ready to share it.
It is a happy book. That is the point.

Questions gift givers ask
How does the personalization work?
When you click Purchase, a Personal Inscription box opens. Add who the book is for and what you would like written, and author Kelsey Lizee Cecil writes it by hand inside the cover before the book ships. Leave the box blank and she will sign it with her signature only.
Is this an autographed copy?
Yes. Every copy from our shop is hand-signed by the author, and personalized with your message if you add one. Copies sold on Amazon and in bookstores are not signed.
Is it cheaper to buy Rally Takes the Train on Amazon?
If you just want the book, yes. The paperback is $16.99 in both places, but Amazon usually ships it free with Prime, while signed copies cost $8.29 to ship. What you get here is a copy hand-signed by the author, Kelsey Lizee Cecil, with your own message written inside the cover, a keepsake you can’t get on Amazon or in a bookstore. And honestly, we are happy either way: buy it wherever you like, as long as you enjoy Rally. Buy Rally Takes the Train on Amazon (opens in a new tab).
Is a signed picture book a good Christmas gift for a toddler?
Yes. A signed, personalized book is a Christmas gift that keeps getting read after the toys are put away, and Rally Takes the Train is a five-minute rhyming read-aloud that works as a bedtime story all winter. Add the child’s name and a holiday message, and Kelsey writes it inside the cover.
When should I order a signed copy for Christmas?
Kelsey signs and ships each copy within 1 to 2 business days, and most orders arrive 3 to 7 days later. Holiday mail runs slower in December, so order at least two weeks before you need it.
What goes well with the book as a Christmas gift?
Many families pair it with the Rally the Corgi watercolor ornament or the Rally Takes the Train jigsaw puzzle, both available on this page. Our free coloring pages make an easy add-on, and a Christmas train ride makes the story come alive. Christmas train rides by state.
What is a good first birthday book gift?
Babies stare at the watercolor pages long before they follow the words, and the rhymes make it easy to read aloud from the first year. A signed copy with the date and a birthday note inside the cover becomes a keepsake they can read on their own by age 8. More first birthday book ideas.
Is it a good birthday gift for a 2, 3, 4 or 5 year old?
Yes. Two-year-olds love the choo choo and the train, three- and four-year-olds retell the trip and the tunnel, and five-year-olds start reading the rhyming lines back to you. It is written for ages 0 to 8, so it grows with them.
What book should I bring to a baby shower instead of a card?
Many parents ask guests to bring a book instead of a card, and a signed copy stands out. Write a note to the baby in the Personal Inscription box and the author inscribes it, so your message stays inside the cover for years. Babies love the bright watercolor pages from the first months. Baby shower book gift ideas.
What should I write inside a baby shower book?
Keep it short and dated: the baby’s name, who it is from and one wish for them, such as “For Baby Emma, may you always find the light after the tunnel. Love, Aunt Kate, spring 2027.” Kelsey writes your words exactly as you enter them.
Is Rally Takes the Train a good gift from grandparents?
It was written for that. Rally rides the train to visit his grand-paw-rents, and the story ends with Grandmommy and Papa waiting on the platform. Many grandparents send it before a visit so little ones know who is waiting at the end of the line. Books about visiting grandparents.
What can long-distance grandparents send a grandchild?
A signed book with a handwritten note travels well and stays on the shelf between visits. Enter your grandchild’s address at checkout and your message in the Personal Inscription box, and Kelsey ships it straight to them. Some grandparents also record themselves reading it so they are part of bedtime from far away. Gifts under $20 from grandparents.
Is it a good Grandparents Day gift?
