Accessibility

A site that works for everyone

Last updated October 6, 2026

Our commitment

Rally Takes the Train is a book for every family, and this website should be too. We want anyone, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, voice control, or reduced-motion settings, to be able to read about the book, look inside it, learn the story behind it, and find their way to Amazon to buy it. Accessibility is part of how we build the Site, not an afterthought.

The standard we aim for

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, the standard referenced by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidance and Section 508. We test our own pages against it at both desktop and phone sizes before publishing.

What we have done

  • Structure. Every page has one main heading and a logical heading order, landmark regions, and breadcrumbs, so screen-reader users can jump around the page.
  • Images. Every meaningful image, including each illustrated page from the book, has descriptive alternative text that includes the words painted on that page. Decorative images are hidden from assistive technology.
  • Color and contrast. Text and interactive elements meet or exceed the 4.5:1 contrast ratio for normal text and 3:1 for large text and controls. Information is never conveyed by color alone.
  • Keyboard. Everything on the Site, including the interactive "look inside" book on the home page, can be operated with a keyboard. Focus is always visible.
  • Links and buttons. Links have clear names, links that open in a new tab say so to screen readers, and touch targets are at least 44 by 44 pixels.
  • Motion. Animations, including the page-turn effect and background video, are reduced or disabled when your device's "reduce motion" setting is on, and video never plays sound.
  • Text. Text can be resized to 200% without loss of content, and pages reflow on small screens without horizontal scrolling.
  • Plain language. We write in short sentences and avoid jargon wherever we can, including in our legal pages.

Known limitations

We are a small operation and some things are outside our control. Where we know of a gap, we would rather tell you:

  • Amazon. The book is sold on Amazon.com, and Amazon's pages, checkout, and review system are built and maintained by Amazon. We cannot change their accessibility. Amazon publishes its own accessibility information and offers a customer service line for assistance.
  • Squarespace. The Site runs on Squarespace. The site header, navigation menu, cookie banner, and any built-in forms are Squarespace components. We configure them for accessibility but cannot alter their underlying code.
  • Background video. The home-page video is decorative and has no audio or narration, so it is not captioned. Everything it shows is also described in text on the page.
  • Third-party content. Embedded social media content, where present, is governed by the platform that provides it.

Tell us if something is in your way

If you have trouble using any part of the Site, or you have a suggestion for making it better, we want to hear from you. Email kelseylcecil@gmail.com and tell us the page, what you were trying to do, and the browser or assistive technology you were using. We aim to reply within five business days and to fix verified issues as quickly as we can. If you need information from the Site in another format, ask and we will do our best to provide it.

Technical details

The Site is built with semantic HTML, CSS, and a small amount of JavaScript, and is designed to work with current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge on desktop and mobile, with screen readers including VoiceOver, NVDA, and TalkBack. Pages are checked with automated tools (axe-core) and by hand with keyboard-only navigation and a screen reader. This statement was last reviewed on October 6, 2026.
