Corgi picture book for kids
The corgi children's book with a real corgi in it
Rally Takes the Train is a hand-painted watercolor picture book about a corgi named Rally and his first train ride to the grand-paw-rents. Painted from the real dog, rhymed for ages 0 to 8, and the corgi gift that actually gets read.
A corgi picture book starring a real corgi
Most corgi books for kids are drawn from a stock photo. Rally Takes the Train is painted from an actual corgi. Rally lives with our family, and illustrator Leslie Dunn painted him from life in watercolor: the oversized ears, the little white socks, the back end that wiggles when he's happy, and yes, the shedding.
The book follows Rally on his first train ride along the coast to visit his grand-paw-rents. He finds a window seat, meets the conductor, says hello to a seagull, and leaves what the book calls "furry corgi glitter" all the way down the aisle. Corgi owners laugh at that page every time. Kids ask what corgi glitter is. You'll know.
Why corgi people keep this one on the shelf
- He looks like a corgi. Hand-painted watercolor, no cartoon proportions, no AI. Leslie got the ears right.
- It's short. A rhyming read-aloud that takes about five minutes, which is the attention span of both a toddler and a corgi.
- It's sweet without being saccharine. A brave little dog, a long ride, and grandparents waiting at the end of the line.
- It travels well. 8.5 by 8.5 inches, a sturdy paperback that fits in a diaper bag or a tote for the train.
The corgi gift for kids that isn't another plush
If you're shopping for a corgi-obsessed kid, a new corgi puppy household, or a friend whose dog is clearly the favorite child, this is the corgi gift that gets read instead of put on a shelf. Sign the inside cover and it becomes a keepsake. It ships from Amazon with fast delivery and the usual 30-day returns.
Pair it with a corgi plush or a bandana for the real dog, and you've got a baby shower or first birthday gift that stands out from the pile.
About the corgi on the cover
Rally is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. He is not a fan of early mornings, which is where the book begins, and he is very much a fan of grandparents, which is where it ends. The book was dreamed up by Kelsey's mom, who loved him best; you can read that story here.
- Painted by handEvery page is real watercolor on paper by Leslie Dunn. Nothing in the book was made with AI.
- Five-minute read-aloudShort rhyming verses that hold a toddler's attention and don't wear out the grown-up reading it.
- A real corgiRally is the family's actual corgi, which is why the fur on page 9 is accurate.
