The Theatre Royal's pantomime this Christmas is Jack and the Beanstalk, from 28 November to 3 January. Rob Rinder stars as the Spirit of the Beans alongside Nottingham panto favourite Neil Hurst as Simon Trot. Jack has to sell his trusty cow, climbs a giant beanstalk to cloudland and sets out to outwit the evil giant.

The show promises laughs, music, special effects and bundles of audience participation, with more star casting still to be announced. Tickets range from £18.50 to £49.50, and there are discounts for groups, concessions and schools on selected performances. As the city's biggest panto it sells quickly for weekend and school holiday dates, so it is worth booking well ahead, especially if you want seats together near the front.

Parent tip: Weekend and holiday matinees sell first; check for concession and group discounts on selected shows.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer takes to the skies over Nottingham Racecourse in a one day drone light show on Saturday 28 November. Hundreds of synchronised drones turn the night sky into a moving picture, telling Rudolph's heart warming story with spectacular aerial animations set to a cinematic score.

The event runs from 2pm to 8pm, so there is time for the extras before it gets dark: fairground rides, face painting and food stalls are on site. Early bird tickets are £14.99 for children and £18.99 for adults. It is billed as a festive family day out and is a good alternative to a light trail if your children prefer a show to a long walk.

Parent tip: The drones fly after dark, so plan the fairground and food first and dress for a cold evening outdoors.

On weekends in the run up to Christmas, Wollaton Hall turns its lower basement into a festive route full of Christmas characters. Families walk through at their own pace, chatting to Santa's helpers along the way, before reaching Santa's Workshop to meet Santa or one of his friends. Every child receives a gift as part of the visit.

Tickets are £9 per child aged 1 to 15 and £9 for adults without an Annual Pass. The entrance is signposted from the red phone box: head up to the lakeside West Entrance through the Courtyard, and allow extra time as there may be a queue on busy days. The route is historic and has steps throughout, so the hall asks visitors to leave prams and buggies behind where possible. Parking charges apply in the deer park.

Parent tip: Leave the buggy in the car if you can, as the route has lots of steps; email wollaton.hall@nottinghamcity.gov.uk with access questions before booking.

Nottingham Castle runs its Santa's Grotto as part of Christmas at Nottingham Castle, which this year runs from 28 November to 3 January. Children meet Santa or one of his friends and see a bit of Christmas magic come to life, and every child aged 1 to 15 goes home with a gift. Babies under one go in free but do not receive a present, and an adult must come in with each child.

Tickets are £9 per child. Adults with an Annual Pass are included, while other adults pay £9. The castle asks families to arrive at least 20 minutes before the booked slot because the site is large and it takes time to get to the grotto. Elsewhere on site over the season there is a wishing tree, a festive Brewhouse Yard, cave tours as a paid add on and festive afternoon teas on selected weekends, so you can easily make a half day of it.

Parent tip: Book a timed slot online and arrive 20 minutes early, as the castle grounds are big and steep in places.

Lakeside Arts' Christmas show this year is The Snowsmith by Half a String. In the grumpy town of Thawmor, inventor Eira is determined to bring back the soft white snow of legend, and her madcap adventure is told through puppetry, live songs, folk music and storytelling. It runs for an hour with no interval and is pitched as a perfect first theatre trip for children aged 4 and over.

Public performances are on 5, 6, 12 and 13 December, daily from 19 to 24 December and 27 to 31 December, and on 2 and 3 January. There are relaxed performances on 21 and 30 December and a BSL interpreted show on 22 December at 2pm. Tickets are £11.50 to £13, and under 2s sitting on a lap get a free ticket. The theatre sits by the lake on University Park, so a walk round the water before the show is a nice addition.

Parent tip: Choose the relaxed shows on 21 or 30 December for younger or sensory sensitive children; the Lakeside car parks are free.

Spotlight Theatre's annual family pantomime returns to Nottingham Arts Theatre with a brand new tale. This year Goldilocks gives up her porridge eating ways and runs away to join the circus, so expect big tricks, bold costumes, belly laughs and all the usual panto madness. It is written by Amanda Hall and Liam Petruccio Hall and billed as just right for the whole family.

Performances run from 5 to 20 December, with afternoon and evening shows on weekends and some weekday shows; the midweek school day performances on 9 and 10 December are already sold out. Tickets start at £19.50, and family and group discounts are available. It is a smaller, more intimate venue than the big city centre pantos, which suits younger children well.

Parent tip: Weekend 11am and 2pm shows are the easiest for little ones; ask about the family ticket discount.

This 90 minute family session at Lakeside Arts is all about fun, laughter and a bit of festive silliness. Children and their grown ups make their own quirky Christmas decorations together, think cheeky Brussels sprouts and jolly Christmas puddings bursting with personality, and the emphasis is on getting messy and letting imaginations run wild.

The workshop is designed for parents or carers to stay and join in. Tickets are £10 and only need to be booked for the children taking part, with the accompanying adult going free. It is suitable for ages 6 and over and takes place in the Performing Arts Studio on Saturday 12 December at 4pm. You could make an afternoon of it alongside a performance of The Snowsmith on the same day.

Parent tip: Only children need a ticket; dress them in clothes that can get messy.

Carrot Productions bring The Snowman to the Royal Concert Hall on Sunday 13 December. The much loved film is shown on the big screen while a professional orchestra plays the soundtrack live, which is a wonderful first orchestral concert for young children.

The programme also includes Fleece Navidad, a Shaun the Sheep Christmas short accompanied live by the musicians, a festive medley and a lively introduction to the orchestra by Daniel Whibley, composer for CBeebies Musical Storyland. The Snowman himself pays a visit, and everyone joins in singing Walking in the Air at the end. Tickets are £25.50 to £29.50. Check the venue site for the performance times on the day, and allow time to find your seats in the large hall.

Parent tip: Check the venue page for the start time, as there may be more than one performance on the day.

On the last Saturday before Christmas, Wollaton Hall hosts a pop up carol concert in its Great Hall. Singers perform a selection of Christmas favourites while visitors walk around the hall, so it works well for families with little ones who cannot sit still through a formal concert.

Entry is free from 1pm and the music runs from 1.30pm to 3.15pm. Donations are welcome. It is standing only, more a festive soundtrack to your visit than a seated performance. Parking charges apply in the deer park. You could pair it with Santa's 12 Days of Christmas, which runs at the hall on the same weekend, or a walk round the deer park before it gets dark.

Parent tip: It is standing only, so it suits a drop in visit rather than a long stay; parking is paid.

The concert opens with Nigel Hess's A Christmas Overture and includes music from The Snow Maiden, Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride and Christmas Festival, and Walking in the Air from The Snowman. The audience gets to join in with a number of carols and Christmas favourites, which keeps younger listeners involved. Tickets are £18.94, with concessions available. It is a lovely way to start Christmas week as a family without a late night.

Parent tip: Book through the orchestra's ticket link, as the Albert Hall itself does not run a box office.

Santa returns to Rufford Abbey Country Park for the festive season, setting up his grotto in the Stables Courtyard. Children meet Santa and each one is given a cuddly 10 inch TY plush to take home. Bookable slots run between 9am and 4pm on selected dates from 28 November to 23 December.

Tickets cost £14 per child, which includes the gift, and two adults can go in with each child at no charge. Only children who want to meet Santa and receive a gift need a ticket. Spaces are limited and the park says they are always in high demand, so book early. The grotto can be reached by wheelchair users and pushchairs through the exit with an elf's help, though the courtyard is cobbled. Use the main entrance car park, NG22 9DF.

Parent tip: Book early as slots sell out; the courtyard is cobbled, so let the elves know if you need help with a pushchair or wheelchair.
