Once Upon a Christmas is the Western Development Museum's holiday exhibit in Saskatoon. In 2026 it runs from November 13 to January 10, 2027, and the host says it is included with museum admission. The display recreates Christmas windows that Eaton's stores showed in cities such as Winnipeg and Toronto in the late 1940s. The museum's volunteer caretaker says the mechanical figures were built in 1948 by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) from surplus parts, and the exhibit also keeps Punkinhead, Eaton's own teddy bear character.

The story of Christmas in Saskatoon
A museum in Saskatoon keeps Christmas window figures that the Royal Canadian Air Force built in 1948 from leftover parts. Add a Santa parade and a light show in a zoo forest, and the city has three traditions kids can still see.
Window figures built from Air Force surplus in 1948
The Eaton's Christmas display at the Western Development Museum dates to 1948. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) built it from surplus parts. Volunteer Randall Simpson, who looks after the machinery, calls it a marvel of 1940s mechanical engineering and says the builders turned surplus machine parts into a children's display. The museum also keeps Punkinhead, Eaton's teddy bear with a woolly tuft, created as the store's answer to Rudolph. Today it runs each winter as Once Upon a Christmas.
A 34th parade and a drive through the lights in 2025
The 34th Saskatoon Santa Claus Parade went through downtown on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at 1 p.m. Roads such as 20th Street at 4th Avenue closed at 9 a.m., and families were asked to bring non-perishable food or new toys. The Enchanted Forest ran November 15, 2025, to January 4, 2026, from 5:30 to 10 p.m., at $35 per car. The Western Development Museum held its Festival of Trees from November 21 to 29. In 2026 the parade is listed for November 15 and the lights open the same day.
Over 75 animated displays and a forest that runs on charity
The Enchanted Forest has run for over 26 years and is promoted as one of Canada's longest-running Christmas light shows. The Saskatoon Zoo Foundation and the Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation organize it. A 2025 events roundup counted over 75 custom animated displays scattered through an urban forest at the Forestry Farm Park and Zoo.Children 5 and under get in free.
