Kidskindl is the children's part of Kitchener's Christkindl Market, which grows to 10 days in 2026 and runs December 3 to 13 downtown. On the two weekends, families can drop by the corner of King and Ontario Streets for free activities planned with kids in mind.

The city says the full list for this year will be posted closer to the market. In past years the line-up has included a petting zoo, a midway ride, decorating a Christmas cookie, photos with Santa, free games, maple taffy and a lap on the Carl Zehr Square skating rink. It's an easy add-on to a stroll through the market stalls. Because Kidskindl only runs on the weekends, plan your market visit for a Saturday or Sunday if you have young children. The activities are free, so you can let kids try a few things before you decide whether to browse the vendor stalls or grab a warm treat.

Parent tip: Activities and times for 2026 are still to be announced, so check the city's Kidskindl page the week before you go.

Gift of Lights at Bingemans is normally a drive-through light show, with a 40-foot LED tree, more than 300 animated and static displays and light tunnels. On a handful of evenings the cars stay away and visitors can walk the route instead.

This walk night, two days before Christmas, is the one Santa joins. Families can stroll through the twinkling displays alongside him, stop for festive photos and enjoy the crisp night air. It runs from 5 to 9 p.m., and tickets cost less when bought online ahead of time. If your family usually drives through the lights, this is a chance to see the displays at a slower pace and stop wherever the kids want. Strollers may make sense for little legs, since the route is designed to be walked from start to finish this evening.

Parent tip: Dress warmly for walking outside and buy tickets online to save a few dollars.

The Cambridge Santa Claus Parade is one of the few night-time parades in Ontario, so the floats, groups and marching bands all twinkle and glow as they roll by. The City of Cambridge now runs this cherished tradition, which volunteers carried for more than 50 years, and it kicks off the city's Winterfest season.

New for 2026, the parade travels along King Street East in Preston, starting at Chestnut Street and ending at Eagle Street. It starts at 6 p.m. sharp, and of course it ends with Santa Claus arriving in town. Watching is free. Since this is an evening parade, the lights on the floats are a big part of the show, which makes it especially magical for younger children. Check the city's Winterfest page for any road closures and parking notes before you head to Preston.

Parent tip: Note the new Preston route this year and arrive early for a curbside spot, since it starts at 6 p.m. sharp.

Get a head start on holiday decorating at the Old Post Office branch, where families can create festive felt ornaments together. Arrange and glue laser-cut felt pieces, then cut your own shapes to make a design that is all your own.

The finished ornaments make a sweet handmade keepsake for your tree or a gift for grandparents. It is a drop-in program open to all ages, running for four hours, so you can come when it suits your Saturday. There is no cost and no registration. Families can make one ornament or a whole set, and because it is drop-in, you can stop by after other Saturday errands. It is an early-season craft, so the ornaments will be ready to hang as soon as your tree goes up.

Parent tip: Younger kids may need a hand with scissors; plan about 30 minutes per ornament.

Classic Catering hosts Brunch with Santa on the grounds of African Lion Safari on three Sundays leading up to Christmas. Families sit down to a hearty brunch in a festive setting, and Santa himself stops by to visit.

It is a ticketed sit-down meal rather than a drop-in, and the organizers note that spots fill quickly, so book early if you have a date in mind. Admission is $44.99 for adults and $25.99 for children. The three-hour window gives families time to enjoy their meal and wait for Santa without rushing. Since it is hosted on the African Lion Safari grounds, it can feel like a special outing, especially for kids who already love the park in summer.

Parent tip: Book ahead; this holiday tradition tends to sell out.

Idea Exchange invites families to celebrate the season at a cheerful evening storytime at the Clemens Mill branch. The half hour mixes festive songs, heartwarming holiday stories, creative crafts and fun activities for children and their grown-ups.

It runs on two Wednesday evenings, which makes it an easy bedtime-adjacent outing for younger kids. The program is free, but the library asks for one registration for each child attending so they can plan supplies and space. The short format keeps even wiggly toddlers engaged, and the craft gives kids something to take home and show off. Choose whichever Wednesday suits your family, and plan to arrive a few minutes early to settle in before the stories begin.

Parent tip: Register each child separately; the early evening time works well before bedtime.

The Preston Tree Lighting Ceremony is a Cambridge Winterfest evening of light, music and community spirit in Central Park. Families can enjoy festive tunes and performances, then gather as the community tree is lit at 7 p.m.

Afterward, wander through the twinkling light displays around the park. It is a short, free evening outing that works well for young kids on a school night, and the same park hosts the city's Candyland family day the following weekend. The event lasts two hours, so families can arrive early for music, stay for the countdown to the lighting and still be home at a reasonable time. It is a simple, festive way to mark the start of December with neighbours.

Parent tip: The lighting itself is at 7 p.m.; arrive by 6:30 to hear some music first.

Part of Cambridge Winterfest, this evening fills Hespeler Village with festive lights, music and the official tree lighting at 7:15 p.m. From 6 to 8 p.m. there are crafts, activities and free hot chocolate, and kids can visit Santa and Mrs. Claus in the RBC trailer parked on Tannery Street. Willy Melt and other special guests pose for photos.

Inside the Idea Exchange Hespeler library there is programming on the main floor, with crafts and kids' activities, and church choirs perform at St. Andrew's from 6 to 7 p.m. Keepsake Winterfest ornaments are handed out while supplies last, and there is plenty of free parking nearby. The event spreads across several spots in the village, so it is easy to move between the outdoor lights and the warm library and church. Free hot chocolate and a short Santa visit make it a full evening for families without spending much at all.

Parent tip: Go early for a keepsake ornament, and pop into the library to warm up between activities.

Hespeler's own Santa Claus Parade rolls through the village at noon, following Groh Avenue to Guelph Avenue and Sheffield Street. It is a smaller, community-run parade that feels very local and friendly for young children.

Canada Post collects letters to Santa along the route, so kids can bring theirs (add a return address if you want a reply). After the parade, families can head to the Scout House at Forbes Park to meet Santa and pick up bags of goodies. The Cambridge Food Bank collects non-perishable food and cash donations at the parade. A noon start means no rushing out early or staying up late, which suits toddlers and preschoolers. Bring a reusable bag for the treats from Santa, and give yourself a few minutes after the parade to walk over to Forbes Park.

Parent tip: Bring your child's letter to Santa with a return address, and a food bank donation if you can.

It is a free drop-in hour, open to kids of all ages, so siblings can come together. It is a nice midweek treat when the countdown to the holidays starts to feel long. Expect a friendly, informal hour aimed at kids rather than a structured class. Since it starts at 7 p.m., it suits school-aged children best, though younger siblings are welcome to join in the games with a parent nearby. Pair it with a walk through Hespeler Village to see the holiday lights on the way home.

Parent tip: Drop in; the branch is in the heart of Hespeler Village with free parking nearby.

Candyland returns to Central Park in Preston as a whimsical Winterfest day made for children and families. Expect colourful candy-themed decor, interactive candy games for all ages and oversized illuminated letters that make a great backdrop for family photos.

The entertainment starts at 10 a.m. with Tinsel and Jingle, followed at 10:45 by a meet-and-greet with Tinsel, Jingle and Aria the Snow Dragon. Tim Holland performs a stunt ventriloquist show at 11:15 a.m. and again at 1:45 p.m. Drop in any time during the day. Admission is free and the day runs for six hours, so families can come and go as naps and lunch allow. It is an outdoor event in December, so warm boots and mittens are a must, and a camera for those big illuminated letters.

Parent tip: Time your visit for 10:45 a.m. if your kids want to meet the characters, or catch the 1:45 p.m. ventriloquist show.

A fun twist on a Santa visit: at the Old Post Office branch of Idea Exchange, children can talk with Santa by radio, all the way from the North Pole. Volunteers from the South Waterloo Amateur Radio Club handle the equipment and help each child make the call.

Kids can say hello, share what they hope to find under the tree, ask Santa their burning questions and hear a special message back from the North Pole. It is a drop-in afternoon, free, with no registration needed, right at the start of the school holidays. This is a great option for kids who feel nervous about sitting on Santa's lap, since they can chat by radio instead. It also makes a fun introduction to how amateur radio works, and the club volunteers are on hand to explain.

Parent tip: Drop in any time from 1 to 4 p.m.; help shy kids prepare a question for Santa ahead of time.

In this hands-on Saturday program at the Eastside Branch, families design a winter-themed pop-up card with a paper mechanism that rises, expands or moves when the card is opened. It is a fun way to try a bit of paper engineering while celebrating the season, and the finished card makes a lovely handmade holiday greeting.

The program is for families with children of all ages and their caregivers. The library asks you to register each child attending separately. Pop-up cards take a little patience, so school-aged kids will likely get the most out of it, while younger children can work with a parent on the cutting and folding. Everyone leaves with a finished card that is ready to mail or hand to someone special.

Parent tip: Register each child separately through the library calendar.

It is open to families with children of all ages and costs nothing. Toddlers and preschoolers can manage most of the crafts with a little help, while older kids can work more independently. With no sign-up needed, it is an easy morning plan on a weekday when little ones are home and looking for something cheerful to do.

Snowy Storytime is a winter edition of Waterloo Public Library's early learning programs. Babies, toddlers and preschoolers come with a caregiver to share seasonal books, songs, movement and play in a warm, welcoming room at the Eastside Branch.

Like all WPL early years programs, it is built on early literacy research, and staff share tips that parents can use at home. The library asks caregivers to join in actively. The program is free and listed without registration, which makes it an easy weekday morning outing during the busy holiday season. If your child is new to library programs, a seasonal storytime like this is a gentle introduction, since it is short and built around songs and simple stories. Older siblings under six are welcome too, and the Eastside Branch sits right inside RIM Park.

Parent tip: Caregivers stay and take part; it suits babies through age 5.

Part of the library's DeSTEMber series, this evening program lets families explore holiday maker projects and tools side by side. Planned activities include making buttons and building simple circuits, with more festive projects to try.

It is a drop-in for families with children of all ages, so you can come after dinner and stay for the hour or just part of it. It is a nice pick for curious kids who like building and tinkering more than colouring. The evening timing makes it a good option for working parents, and the projects lean toward building and electronics rather than paper crafts. Expect a lively, hands-on room where kids can move from one maker activity to the next with a grown-up nearby.

Library staff gather families for winter sports stories, there are crafts for the kids, and the museum brings out vintage sports gear that shows how people once played in the park in winter.

It is part of the Wonders of Winter festival, when Waterloo Park lights up with holiday displays, so it pairs nicely with a walk through the lights afterward. Drop in any time between 5 and 7 p.m.; no registration is needed and it is free. The cabin evenings are an easy way to add a story and a craft to a Wonders of Winter visit without any extra cost. With three dates to choose from, including two in the school break, it is simple to fit into a busy December week.

This post-Christmas storytime invites children to arrive in pajamas with their favourite stuffed animal. Everyone shares stories and songs together, and then each child decides whether their stuffie will stay at the library overnight.

Stuffies that sleep over enjoy an evening of holiday adventures with the staff after closing, and families pick them up the next day to hear all about the fun. It is a gentle, playful program for ages 3 to 8 with a caregiver during the school break. Each child needs their own registration, and the library will remove registrations that don't match the age range. It is a lovely way to stretch the holiday magic into the week after Christmas, and many kids love imagining what their stuffie got up to overnight. Plan the pick-up the next day when you register, so there are no tears at bedtime without a favourite friend.

Parent tip: Register each child separately and plan a quick trip back the next day to collect the stuffie.
