The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia opens the Parliament Buildings for an afternoon of holiday music before the building's famous lights are switched on for the season. From 3 to 5:30 pm, families can head inside to see the Christmas tree, enjoy family-friendly activities and listen to performances by local choirs and bands.

From 6 to 6:30 pm, the celebration moves outside to the front driveway for choral performances by local school choirs and the lighting of the Parliament Buildings. It is a classic way to start the season on the Inner Harbour, and the Legislature also hosts free musical performances in the Upper Rotunda throughout December if you want to return.

Greater Victoria Public Library's Central Branch kicks off December with Wonderful Wintry Storytime in its children's area. Young children and their families celebrate wintry tales of snow and forest friends, with songs, rhymes and a paper craft to round out the hour. It is a seasonal storytime rather than a Christmas party, so it suits families of any tradition.

The program is free and drop-in, and space is limited. Children under 3 must be accompanied by an adult. Central Branch is the system's largest library, in the heart of downtown Victoria on Broughton Street, so you can follow storytime with a walk to see the holiday window displays or the lights on the Inner Harbour later in the day.

Parent tip: Drop-in with limited space; children under 3 must be with an adult.

The Royal BC Museum calls its Carol-Along with the Carillon a festive signature event. Families gather on the museum precinct's upper patio to sing favourite holiday songs with the Newcombe Singers, accompanied by the bells of the Netherlands Centennial Carillon, the tall bell tower beside the museum. Hot chocolate and cookies help everyone warm up, and the museum says everyone is welcome.

The carol-along is free and lasts about 45 minutes in the late afternoon, so it suits young children who cannot stay out late. It takes place outdoors, so dress for the weather and bring your singing voice. The museum is a short walk from the Inner Harbour and the Parliament Buildings, which makes it easy to combine with a December stroll to see the lights downtown.

Parent tip: It is outdoors on the upper patio, so dress warmly; arrive a few minutes before 4:15 pm to find a spot near the singers.

During the Magic of Christmas season, The Butchart Gardens near Brentwood Bay fill with colourful light displays, including scenes depicting The Twelve Days of Christmas that families can find one by one while singing along to the carol. Traditional Carollers and a Festive Brass band alternate every half hour from 5 to 9 pm, and the Coffee Shop serves hot chocolate and gingerbread by the fire. The average stroll takes about an hour.

A sweet tradition for children 12 and under: make a snowflake at home from a sheet of white paper, bring it along, and trade it at the Coffee Shop for a cup of hot chocolate. Your snowflake may decorate the windows all season. The Gardens strongly recommend booking a timed entrance ticket in advance; walk-ups are admitted only if there is capacity. Pets are not permitted before 8:30 pm during the season.

Parent tip: Book a timed entrance ticket ahead, and have kids 12 and under bring a homemade paper snowflake to trade for hot chocolate.
