In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi's little legs can't manage the big train stairs, so Dad gives him a boost. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to Brainerd.

From locomotive repair shop to Brainerd gathering place

The Northern Pacific Center grew out of Brainerd's railroad repair shops. Inside its brick walls, skilled workers once hammered and fitted parts to keep locomotives running and trains safe, and the venue says some of its spaces date back to 1871. The hand-hewn beams and natural brick that remain are the clearest link to that working past.

As railroad work moved on, the buildings found new lives. Weddings came first, then local businesses, boxing matches, concerts and markets, and most recently a catering division and the Notch 8 Restaurant. Today the center describes itself as a 47-acre historic railroad district. It is a privately run venue rather than a museum with exhibits, so visitors interested in Northern Pacific history should come for the setting and the buildings rather than for displays of equipment.

What you will find on the grounds

Explore Minnesota describes a district with a coffee shop, clothing boutiques, a candy and popcorn store, a restaurant and several event venues, including the Blacksmith space used for weddings. The venue's Taste and Tour days invite visitors to walk through its ceremony and reception spaces, getting-ready suites and a foundry furniture collection at their own pace.

Don’t miss

  2. Off The Rails Christmas MarketA December market held inside the historic buildings, with a VIP ticket option.

Best on event days

The center does not offer children's railroad exhibits. Families with kids will get the most from public events: the Northern Off-Road Expo in April has a Kids Zone with hands-on activities and machines to see, and the December Christmas market and the candy and popcorn shop are easy wins with little ones.

Plan your visit: tips for Northern Pacific Center

  • Check the events calendar before you go; many spaces open only for events.
  • Seasonal construction on Highway 210 may mean detours; the center suggests Highway 371 to 210 from Baxter or Gull Lake.
  • Buy tickets for Taste and Tour or the Christmas market VIP online ahead of time.

The Off The Rails Christmas Market fills the historic buildings on December 11 and 12, 2026, with vendors and a VIP option for $70. Through the fall and early winter the center also serves a Friday Prime Rib Dinner, and spring brings the Brainerd Boat Show and the Northern Off-Road Expo.

A local team in historic buildings

The Northern Pacific Center is run by a local team led by CEO Mike Higgins, with an events staff and the Notch 8 Restaurant and Catering crew. It is a private venue, so the best way to support it is to shop with the businesses in the district and attend its community events.

Bring Rally along: a train book for the drive

From Rally Takes the Train, watercolor by Leslie Dunn.

The center says skilled hands in these shops kept locomotives running and passengers safe, and I think of those workers whenever I paint Mr. Conductor. In our book he stands in his blue uniform with his hand held out, ready to help Rally, Mom and Dad aboard. Somebody always made sure the trip went smoothly, even if riders never saw them. Our story page tells why my mom wanted kindness at the heart of the book.
