In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi's little legs can't manage the big train stairs, so Dad gives him a boost. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to Willmar.

From the Old Settlers Association to a depot museum
The Kandiyohi County Historical Society traces its start to 1897, when local pioneers formed the Old Settlers Association. In 1940 the group incorporated under its current name with a simple mission: discover, preserve and share the story of Kandiyohi County and its people. Its museum and grounds opened in 1969, across from Foot Lake in Willmar.
The railroad sits at the center of that story. The society's main building is the original 1900 Great Northern depot, now home to the museum gallery, a community room and the Lawson Research Library. Out on the grounds stands Great Northern Railway passenger Engine 2523, a full-size locomotive the society uses in school tours and community presentations about the line that tied Willmar to the rest of the region.
Over the years the society has gathered other buildings around the depot and engine: the Victorian home of Albert H. and Jennie Sperry, listed on the National Register of Historic Places; the District 18 one-room schoolhouse from 1880, moved to the grounds in 1971; the Judge G.E. Qvale cabin; and the log cabin of Guri Endreson, one of Minnesota's oldest log homes and a link to the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Staff and volunteers keep researching and collecting so future generations can learn the county's past.
An engine, a depot and a small historic village
Start inside the depot, where the museum gallery holds artifacts, photographs and exhibits on local history, including displays on transportation, the railroad, the Civil War and the Willmar 8. The Lawson Research Library and archives are in the same building for anyone tracing family or local history.
Outside, Great Northern Engine 2523 is the draw for train fans, a full-size passenger locomotive from the railroad that built Willmar's depot. The six-building complex also includes the Sperry House, open on summer Saturdays, the District 18 schoolhouse, the Qvale cabin and the Endreson cabin, so a short walk takes you from the age of steam to the pioneer era.
Don’t miss
- Great Northern Engine 2523A full-size Great Northern passenger engine, the centerpiece of the museum's railroad story and a regular stop on school tours.

- Sperry HouseA restored Victorian home on the National Register, open Saturdays 10 am to 2 pm from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
- District 18 SchoolhouseAn 1880 one-room schoolhouse moved to the grounds in 1971, a favorite with school groups.
Engine, schoolhouse and recess games

School tours rotate through hands-on stations that may include Engine 2523, the Sperry House, the schoolhouse, old-fashioned recess games and a museum object hunt; a full tour takes about two hours.
Because admission is free, the museum is easy to fit into a day in Willmar. Fall brings the Scarecrow Festival on the grounds, and in December, Kandi Kane Lane fills the museum with decorated trees that visitors vote on.

Bring Rally along: a train book for the drive

In December this old depot fills with decorated trees for Kandi Kane Lane, and I love picturing families walking in from a dark Minnesota afternoon to all those lights. It is a lot like the tunnel page in our book: everything goes dark around Rally, Mom and Dad, then a big bright light and happy cheers. My kids always shout along. If yours would like to color that page, our coloring pages are free to print.
