During World War II, volunteers on one depot platform in Dennison served roughly 1.3 million service members passing through on troop trains, and soldiers nicknamed the little Ohio town Dreamsville. That depot is one stop on this page, part of our guide to train museums across the country, and Ohio fills it with 25 museums, rail parks and excursion lines in 23 towns. Type your town into the finder below to see which ones are closest.
The mix is wide. You can tour a working 18-stall roundhouse at the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum, climb aboard a Nickel Plate Berkshire in Bellevue, ride an interurban line near Columbus or Cleveland, or watch a 1940s Cincinnati in miniature inside Union Terminal. Several places are free, and many sell rides that young kids can handle.
Most of the outdoor collections are seasonal, and a few run only on event days or by appointment, so check each card for hours before you load the car.

Big engines, little legs. Bring Rally along.
In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi's little legs can't manage the big train stairs, so Dad gives him a boost. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to an Ohio train museum.

Ohio train museum day trips
Trip 1
Roundhouse and troop train depot
- Age of Steam Roundhouse MuseumSugarcreek
- Dennison Railroad Depot MuseumDennison
Sugarcreek and Dennison are about 19 miles apart. Book a morning Age of Steam tour online, since only online tickets guarantee a time slot, then head to the Dennison depot for the kids' rail car and the canteen story. Tours run Thursday to Saturday, and Dennison is closed Mondays, so a Thursday, Friday or Saturday works best.
Trip 2
Trolleys and a short train ride in Northeast Ohio
The Northern Ohio Railway Museum and Orrville sit about 15 miles apart. Pick a second or fourth Saturday for streetcar rides and the Discovery Track play area, then check Orrville's schedule for a 40 to 45 minute train ride. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is about 19 miles from Seville if you have a longer weekend.
Trip 3
Southwest Ohio rides
Lebanon and Dayton are about 21 miles apart. Ride a themed train from Lebanon Station, then spend the afternoon at Carillon Historical Park, where the narrow gauge railroad rolls through a historic horse barn. The park railroad stops an hour before the park closes, so do not save it for last.
How rails shaped Ohio
Ohio's railroad story starts early: the Mad River and Lake Erie was the first railroad chartered in the state. Coal pushed the next wave. In the 1860s backers of the Columbus and Hocking Valley built a line toward Nelsonville because wagons and the canal were too slow, and when the first coal train reached Columbus in 1869 it fired a cannon as it neared each town. That company grew into the largest independent railroad located entirely within Ohio.
Towns rose around shops and crossings. Dennison sat at a crew change point about 100 miles from both Columbus and Pittsburgh and once employed about 3,000 railroad workers. Bellevue held the Nickel Plate Road's largest classification yard, Conneaut repaired its steam engines until 1958, and five railroads reached Fostoria by the 1880s. Electric interurbans added another layer, linking towns like Columbus, Delaware and Marion from 1901 to 1933.
Each museum holds a piece of that. The Dennison Railroad Depot Museum tells the troop train canteen story, the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway rides the 1869 coal line, and the Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum and Conneaut Railroad Museum keep two Nickel Plate Berkshires. For the electric era, visit the Ohio Railway Museum and the Northern Ohio Railway Museum, and for big crossings, the free platform at Fostoria.

Holiday trains and seasonal days at Ohio museums
Ohio's holiday trains start early on the calendar. In fall, the Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad runs its Pumpkin Express, the Ohio Railway Museum and the Lorain & West Virginia Railway both run pumpkin patch trains, and the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway runs a costume-friendly Halloween Train; see our Ohio Halloween and pumpkin train guide for dates. In December, the Dennison depot runs The Polar Express, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs its North Pole Adventure, the Age of Steam Roundhouse adds a steam train ride to Santa Comes to the Roundhouse, and Bellevue offers short heated caboose rides on its Holiday Train. Our Ohio Christmas train rides roundup collects the Santa trains in one place.
Good to know before you go
- The Age of Steam Roundhouse requires closed-toe shoes with soles, runs tours only Thursday to Saturday, and guarantees your time slot only for tickets bought online.
- Many collections are summer only: the Mad River & NKP museum closes October to April, the Ohio Railway Museum's regular days are Saturdays, and Northern Ohio Railway Museum trolleys run on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays.
- At the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway your confirmation is not a ticket. Pick up paper tickets in the depot, and know that food and soft drinks are allowed on board.
- At Carillon Historical Park, the $12 all-day railroad pass costs less than separate $5 rides if kids will ride more than twice.
- Veterans get in free at the Dennison depot, and children under 7 do too.
- The Fostoria rail park sits inside three active mainlines, so keep kids on the platform and in the park.
- A few listings have no regular hours: the Cincinnati Railway Museum and Byesville Scenic Railway are by appointment, and the AC&J Scenic Line no longer runs excursions.
Train museums just over the Ohio line
From Toledo, the Michigan train museums start about an hour away with the Greenfield Village Railroad in Dearborn, where a working late-19th-century roundhouse still services steam engines. From Cincinnati, the Indiana train museum guide leads to the Whitewater Valley Railroad in Connersville, about 1 hr 10 min away, which runs on an old canal towpath route. From Cleveland, the Pennsylvania train museums include the Oil Creek & Titusville Railroad, about 2 hr 25 min away, where you can mail a postcard from a 1927 Railway Post Office car.
A note from Rally's family

Rally is our real corgi, and those short legs are the reason a train's first step is a big deal in our house. In the book, Dad gives Rally a boost up the tall stairs of the Pacific Surfliner in San Diego, and that is the moment my kids, who are learning to read, always point to. My mom dreamed up this story before she died in 2021, and you can read how it came together on our story page. If your little one finds a favorite Ohio train, print a Rally coloring page for the ride home.
