Taking the kids to Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad? Bring Rally along.
In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi's little legs can't manage the big train stairs, so Dad gives him a boost. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to Peninsula.

A valley railroad that never stopped running for visitors
The tracks through the Cuyahoga Valley date to the Valley Railway, which opened in 1880. In its early days every community along the route through the valley had its own depot, a place where farmers, families and mail met the train. Over the decades nearly all of them disappeared. The depot in Peninsula is the one historic station still standing in the valley, and today it serves as a ticket office, customer service center and boarding point for the railroad.
The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad now operates on that line as a nonprofit excursion railroad. Its mission is to preserve and restore vintage railcars and locomotives so future generations can ride them, and it pays for that work through tickets, memberships, donations and its online store. The trains roll through Cuyahoga Valley National Park, with stations stretching from Independence in the north to Akron in the south, and the National Park Service promotes the ride as a way to see the park.
Over the years the railroad has built a calendar that runs through every season, from National Park Scenic excursions and fall color trips to tasting rides, themed evenings and Steam in the Valley. Its staff, crews and volunteers keep the equipment rolling, and its best known tradition, the North Pole Adventure, has become a holiday habit for families across Northeast Ohio.
Riding through Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Most visitors come for the ride itself. Trains board at Rockside Station in Independence, Peninsula Depot at 1630 Mill Street West, and Akron Northside Station, then travel through the national park, where riders watch for scenery and wildlife and learn about the railroad's history in the valley. Coach seating is standard, and a Cafe Car sells snacks and drinks on board.
Hikers, runners and cyclists can also use the railroad's shuttle service and hop on or off at Botzum Station, near the southern edge of the park beside the Towpath Trail. In the evening, the After Hours excursion pairs happy hour drinks and snacks with sunset views, and private car rentals are available for special occasions. At Peninsula Depot, take a moment to look at the building itself, the last historic depot of the line.

- The North Pole AdventureThe railroad's signature holiday train, which it calls Northeast Ohio's holiday tradition.
- Botzum Station and the Towpath TrailThe stop for the bike and hiker shuttle, an easy way to combine a train ride with a walk or bike ride in the park.

Window seats, wildlife and a ride to the North Pole
Most Fall Scenic and National Park Scenic excursions are open to all ages, so even small children can ride. Kids can watch for wildlife from the windows, and the Cafe Car makes snack breaks easy. The railroad describes itself as a good multi-generational outing, comfortable for grandparents and kids together.
The North Pole Adventure is the big one for young children each holiday season. Some trips are for grown-ups only: the Murder Mystery ride is for ages 14 and up, so check the age line on each excursion before you book.
Plan your visit: tips for Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
- Pick your boarding station before you buy; departures leave from Rockside, Peninsula and Akron Northside.

- Groups of 20 to 72 must book at least two weeks ahead.

The railroad's holiday centerpiece is the North Pole Adventure, a family train it calls Northeast Ohio's holiday tradition, and it also runs a Christmas in July ride, Veterans Day excursions and Steam in the Valley. Bring Rally along: a train book for the drive

A ride through a national park is really a ride for the window seat. In our book, Rally presses up to an arched window, sees the ocean and says hello to a white bird. Here it would be trees and river instead, and I can picture kids calling out every heron and deer. That window page is the one my children ask for again and again. We have coloring pages of Rally's trip too.
