Lake Shore Limited With Kids: Boston and New York Stops, Hudson Views
Planning the Lake Shore Limited with kids? It's a solid overnight choice: the train leaves Chicago every evening and reaches New York in about 20 hours, or Boston in about 22, and kids 2 to 12 ride for half price. The one thing to get straight before you book is the split: the train runs as one between Chicago and Albany-Rensselaer, then becomes two trains, one down the Hudson River to New York and one across the Berkshires to Boston. Coming west, the two halves leave New York and Boston separately and join at Albany. Below you'll find both sets of stops, how to land in the right car, and which window gets the Hudson.
The short version
- Daily overnight train: Chicago to New York takes about 20 hours, Chicago to Boston about 22.
- The train splits at Albany-Rensselaer going east and joins there going west, so stay in your assigned car.
- Bound for New York? Sit on the right side for the Hudson River.
- No checked bags between Boston and Albany since 2019; the New York side still has baggage service.
- Viewliner sleepers: Roomettes, Bedrooms and a four-bed Bedroom Suite, but no Family Bedroom.
- Buffalo-Depew has a bison statue out front, a fun first stop for an eastbound morning ride.

Do kids need a ticket on the Lake Shore Limited?

Same family rule as every Amtrak train: a child 2 to 12 pays 50 percent of the adult fare when booked with a traveler 18 or older, and babies under 2 ride free on a lap, one per adult. Kids 12 and under can’t ride alone. Here’s what is different on this particular train.
Book to the right city. Your ticket decides which half of the train you ride after Albany. A ticket to Boston puts you in a Boston car, and a ticket to New York puts you in a New York car. Double-check the city before you pay, especially if Grandma lives near both.
The room isn’t discounted for kids. The half-price child fare covers only the rail fare, not the sleeper room charge. For a family of four, the best fit is a Bedroom Suite: two connected Bedrooms with four beds in all.
Plan bags by section. The Boston side lost its baggage car in January 2019, so there’s no checked baggage between Boston and Albany. The New York side kept its baggage car. For car seats and lap-baby tips, see our Amtrak with kids guide.

The Lake Shore Limited stops at 16 stations between Chicago and Albany-Rensselaer, where it splits in two. The New York section adds 4 more stops down the Hudson, and the Boston section adds 6 more across Massachusetts. Both lists are below, New York section first. Amtrak’s fall 2026 timetable shows more than one Boston schedule pattern, so check the times for your exact date.

What kids can see from the Lake Shore Limited
The Hudson River, New York section
Below Albany the tracks run along the east bank of the Hudson, so the river is on the right side heading to New York and the left side heading to Chicago. Give the kids a checklist: the Saugerties Lighthouse across the water, Bannerman’s Castle on Pollepel Island, and the stone walls of West Point on the far shore.
This stretch comes in the afternoon both ways. Eastbound, the New York cars leave Albany at 4:10 p.m. and reach Penn Station at 6:42 p.m. Westbound, they leave New York at 3:40 p.m. and reach Albany at 7:05 p.m., so spring and summer give you the most daylight.
Why it follows the water
This line was the New York Central’s “Water Level Route.” It follows the Hudson and the Mohawk rivers and runs near the shore of Lake Erie, so there are no big mountain climbs between New York and Chicago. In upstate New York the line runs alongside the Erie Canal, and work on the canal began at Rome, between Utica and Syracuse.
The New York Central ran a train called the Lake Shore Limited from 1897 to 1956. Today’s Amtrak version started on October 31, 1975, with both a New York and a Boston section from day one. A train with a Halloween birthday is a fun one to share with the kids.
The Berkshires, Boston section
East of Albany the Boston cars cross the Berkshire Hills, with Pittsfield as the hub of the region. Past Pittsfield the train follows the Westfield River for several miles, a good place to watch for wildlife. The westbound Boston cars run this stretch in daylight, leaving South Station at 12:50 p.m. and reaching Pittsfield at 4:42 p.m.
In May 2025 a sinkhole under the tracks in East Greenbush, New York, forced buses between Albany and Boston. Trains came back on December 1, 2025.
The Chicago skyline
Leaving Chicago, look left for the skyline. On a 9:30 p.m. departure the towers are lit up, a nice last look before pajamas.

Where to sit with kids on the Lake Shore Limited
Every car is one level, with no stairs inside. Coach seats are two by two and recline part of the way, so if you ride coach overnight, plan on sleeping sitting up. Coach has no four-seat tables; the cafe car is where families spread out a game or a snack.
Stay in your assigned car. Because the train splits at Albany-Rensselaer, the New York cars and the Boston cars go different ways after that stop. If you want to move so the family can sit together, ask the conductor first whether that car goes to your city. In Albany the New York section also trades its diesel engine for a dual-mode one, since diesel engines aren’t allowed into Penn Station.
Sleepers are single-level Viewliners. You can book a Roomette, a Bedroom, an Accessible Bedroom, or a Bedroom Suite made from two Bedrooms with four beds. There’s no Family Bedroom here, because that room is only built into Superliner cars. Room choices can differ between the two sections, so search from your real starting city to see what’s offered.
One more unknown: we couldn’t confirm a Quiet Car on the Lake Shore Limited, so check with the conductor and bring headphones.
Seated apart on the Lake Shore Limited? What to do
Step one is a single reservation for the whole family. Then reach Chicago Union Station about 30 minutes before the 9:30 p.m. departure. At a station this size, Amtrak staff often let parents with small children board early, and you want to find pairs before the coach fills.
The split adds a rule here: hunt for open seats only in cars bound for your city. If your New York or Boston coach is full, take the two closest seats you can find, then check the next car with the same destination. Once the lights dim, a rider stretched over two seats may be fast asleep, so go to the crew instead of waking them.
Before bedtime, it’s fair to ask a neighbor to switch. Try “Sorry to bother you, could my 4-year-old and I sit together?”, offer a seat no worse than theirs, and leave window riders in their windows unless you have one to give. Take a no gracefully.
Flag the conductor when you board or when tickets are checked, tell them who’s in your party, and ask about open seats. Bags lose their seats to people, one seat per ticket, but nobody sitting down gets moved. However tired everyone is, no young child sleeps alone rows away from you.
The best first Lake Shore Limited ride with kids
These times are from Amtrak’s current timetable. If a short trip doesn’t show up for sale, Empire Service trains cover most of the same New York State stops.
- Albany-Rensselaer to New York (about 2 hours 30 minutes). The New York cars leave Albany at 4:10 p.m. and reach Penn Station at 6:42 p.m., with the Hudson out the right-side windows the whole way. We think it’s the prettiest short ride on this train.
- Boston to Worcester or Springfield (about 1 hour 15 minutes, or 2 hours 35 minutes). The westbound Boston cars leave South Station at 12:50 p.m., so this works as an after-lunch ride. You reach Worcester at 2:06 p.m. and Springfield at 3:26 p.m. Line up a car or another train for getting home.
- Buffalo-Depew to Rochester (about 1 hour). Eastbound, the train leaves Buffalo-Depew at 9:05 a.m. and reaches Rochester at 10:06 a.m. An hour is a good length for a first ride. Say hello to the bison statue before you board.

Food, bathrooms and naps on the Lake Shore Limited

Anyone can buy snacks, drinks and simple meals in the cafe car, and bringing your own food is fine too. Pack breakfast if you ride coach: eastbound, the train reaches Cleveland at 5:50 a.m. and Erie at 7:24 a.m., and kids wake up hungry.
Sleeper passengers get meals, water and coffee included. The Viewliner diner works as a private lounge for sleeper passengers and is closed to coach riders; meals there come without table service. Sleeper rooms also come with shower access, a nice reset before the hugs at the other end.
Overnight, the eastbound train crosses Indiana and Ohio in the dark after its 9:30 p.m. Chicago departure. Westbound, the quiet hours run from Buffalo, just after midnight, to Toledo at 6:33 a.m. Bring a small pillow and a familiar blanket for coach, plus our free printable activity pack for the slow morning hours.
For diaper changes, we couldn’t confirm changing tables on either section, so bring a pad and use the accessible restroom, which has more elbow room.
A train book for the ride

Rally Takes the Train ends at the arrival: Rally’s grand-paw-rents are on the platform, waving as the train pulls in. On the Lake Shore Limited, that page could happen in Boston or in New York, depending on which half of the train you ride. Read it in Albany while the cars split, and talk about who will be waiting at your end.
It’s a five-minute read. Print our free Rally activity pack, and let the kids draw their own grandparents waving on the platform before you get there.

A story for the last hour on the Lake Shore LimitedRally Takes the Train is a five-minute rhyming picture book about a corgi riding the train to see his grand-paw-rents, painted by hand in watercolor. $13.99 on Amazon, ages 0 to 8.

Lake Shore Limited with kids: questions parents ask
Do kids need a ticket on the Lake Shore Limited?
Yes. Ages 2 to 12 need a half-price ticket booked with a grown-up who is at least 18, and age on day one of the trip sets the fare. Book it to the right city, because your ticket decides whether you ride the New York or Boston half after Albany. The discount skips the sleeper room charge, so a Roomette costs the same no matter how old the person in the second bed is.
Do babies ride free on the Lake Shore Limited?
Yes. Your baby rides free until their second birthday, held on the lap of an adult paying the adult fare, one per adult. Two babies with one adult, or a baby booked into a seat of their own, means paying the kids' rate for that one. Overnight, a lap baby may use the seat beside you only if a paying passenger doesn't want it, so a Roomette or Bedroom is the way to guarantee sleeping space.
Do I need a car seat on the Lake Shore Limited?
No. Car seats aren't something you can secure on Amtrak, on this train or any other. One can sit on a vacant seat if no paying rider wants it; if one does, your under-2 goes back in your arms and the seat gets stowed in a baggage area. Pack it only if you'll be driving away from Penn Station or South Station. From Boston there's no checked baggage, so it comes aboard in place of a regular bag.
Are there changing tables on the Lake Shore Limited?
Changing tables on this train's Amfleet coaches and Viewliner sleepers are something we couldn't confirm. Amtrak sets no official diaper-changing rule, so it differs from car to car. Pack a travel changing mat and try the roomier accessible restroom. In a sleeper, you can do the morning change in your room before arrival, then use the shower access to freshen up yourself.
What are the bathrooms like on the Lake Shore Limited?
You'll find a restroom in every car, at least one, and since the train is all one level, a sleepy midnight dash involves no stairs. Look for the light that shows when it's occupied, walk small kids there yourself, and warn them the flush is loud. During the Albany-Rensselaer stop, stay in your own section rather than wandering off to find a restroom, since the cars split there.
Can I bring a stroller on the Lake Shore Limited?
Yes. Have a baby under 2? Bring a stroller or diaper bag as an extra, beyond your normal allowance of two carry-ons and one personal item. Checking a big stroller depends on your half of the train: the Boston section has had no baggage car since January 2019, so nothing is checked between Boston and Albany, while the New York section still checks bags at stations that offer it.
Can I breastfeed or warm a bottle on the Lake Shore Limited?
Yes. Every state had a law protecting public breastfeeding by 2018, so nurse wherever you're sitting. Amtrak's tip for bottles is to ask the dining car staff for help, but on this train the Viewliner diner is a private lounge for sleeper passengers. Coach families should pack bottles, formula and water for the night. Eastbound, the train reaches Cleveland at 5:50 a.m., so keep the first bottle ready.
What food is on the Lake Shore Limited?
Everyone can shop the cafe car for snacks, drinks and simple meals, and it has tables where kids can spread out. Sleeper passengers get meals, water and coffee included, served in the Viewliner diner without table service. In coach, feed everyone before the 9:30 p.m. Chicago departure, then pack a bedtime snack and a breakfast your kids will actually eat for the morning in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
How do I keep kids busy on the Lake Shore Limited?
Make the Hudson a scavenger hunt. On the New York section, sit on the right heading south, or the left heading to Chicago, and look for the Saugerties Lighthouse, Bannerman's Castle on Pollepel Island and West Point across the water. Boston riders get the Berkshires and the Westfield River. Between views, there are our free Rally coloring pages, a read of Rally, and a cafe car visit.
Which seats work best for families on the Lake Shore Limited?
Coach is two by two with no four-seat tables, and the cafe car is where a family can share a table. Everything is on one level, so a sleepy toddler never meets a staircase. Stay in your assigned car, because after Albany-Rensselaer the New York and Boston cars go different ways. For a family of four, a Bedroom Suite with four beds keeps everyone in one room.
Is there a Quiet Car on the Lake Shore Limited?
We couldn't confirm whether the Lake Shore Limited carries a Quiet Car, so look at your reservation or ask a crew member at boarding. If your car turns out to be one, it means soft voices, no phone calls and devices on mute, which is tough with a wide-awake toddler. Either way, pack headphones, since much of this trip happens while other riders are asleep.
What should I pack for kids on the Lake Shore Limited?
Pack for a night and most of a day: about 20 hours to New York or 22 to Boston. Bring pajamas, a small pillow and a familiar blanket for the reclining coach seats, toothbrushes, extra diapers and wipes, a changing pad, breakfast, headphones and a battery pack. Heading to Boston? Keep it all in carry-ons, since that section can't check bags, and slip in our printable pack-a-suitcase page.
Where do kids sleep on the Lake Shore Limited?
Eastbound, the train leaves Chicago at 9:30 p.m. and crosses Indiana and Ohio in the dark, so bedtime comes early in the ride. Coach seats recline part way, so kids sleep sitting up. There's no Family Bedroom, which only exists on two-level Superliner trains, so families of four often book a Bedroom Suite with four beds, or two Roomettes with one adult and one child in each.
What is the best first ride on the Lake Shore Limited?
Try Buffalo-Depew to Rochester eastbound: it leaves at 9:05 a.m. and arrives at 10:06 a.m., one hour, with a bison statue to greet first. For river views, ride the New York cars from Albany-Rensselaer at 4:10 p.m. to Penn Station at 6:42 p.m. If a short trip isn't for sale, Empire Service trains cover most of the same New York State stops.
Can kids ride the Lake Shore Limited alone?
Kids 12 and under can't ride alone. Teens 13 to 15 fall under Amtrak's unaccompanied minor rules: book by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL, pay the adult fare, travel by day, stick to staffed stations and skip transfers. That rules out the overnight Chicago stretch. A daytime piece, like the westbound Boston cars from South Station at 12:50 p.m. to Worcester, is worth asking about. Teens 16 and 17 can ride alone.
How early should we get to the station for the Lake Shore Limited?
About 30 minutes early, and allow more at Chicago Union Station or New York Penn Station, where staff may let families with young kids on before the general crowd. When you board, check the car number on your ticket and ask the conductor to confirm the car goes to your city. In New York, Amtrak trains board from Moynihan Train Hall.
What if my child gets scared on the Lake Shore Limited?
Name the surprises ahead of time. At Albany-Rensselaer the train sits while the crew splits the cars and the New York section swaps engines, which can feel strange to a kid who doesn't know why. New York Penn Station is the busiest transportation hub in the Western Hemisphere, so hold hands in the crowd. Read Rally's tunnel page at bedtime: dark first, then bright light. The free what-happens-next page helps too.
Is the Lake Shore Limited safe for kids?
Yes, with steady habits. Grab hands before the doors open, wait well back of the platform line, and once you're rolling, have kids sit down or hang on to a seat back. Walk them through the gaps between cars hand in hand. Shoes stay on, even for a 3 a.m. bathroom trip. And never let kids wander into another car around Albany, where the two halves of the train go separate ways.
What if the Lake Shore Limited is delayed?
Keep the Amtrak app open to your train, read any travel advisories, and watch the Boston section most closely: in May 2025 a sinkhole in East Greenbush, New York, forced buses between Albany and Boston until trains returned on December 1, 2025. The fall 2026 timetable shows more than one Boston schedule pattern, so confirm times for your date and pack extra snacks and diapers.
What do we do if our family is split up on the Lake Shore Limited?
Take the nearest seats, but only in a car headed to your city, since the New York and Boston cars part at Albany-Rensselaer. One adult then checks the next same-city coach for an empty pair while the other keeps the kids company. Coats and backpacks never count as passengers, so a seat holding one may open up. Want a sure thing for the night? A Bedroom Suite sleeps four in one room.
Can the conductor move us so we sit together on the Lake Shore Limited?
Partly. Catch them as you board or at the ticket check and explain your group, say two parents, a toddler and a baby. They can tell you which cars go to your city, show you empty seats and get riders to move bags. Nobody already seated will be made to give up a spot, and if your lap baby has spread onto an empty seat, a paying rider may claim it.
Where does the Lake Shore Limited split for Boston and New York?
At Albany-Rensselaer, across the Hudson River from Albany. Going east, the train arrives from Chicago as one, then the Boston cars head east across Massachusetts and the New York cars head south along the Hudson. Going west, the two sections leave Boston and New York separately and join at Albany for the overnight run to Chicago.
