Expect cheerful shows, a chance to be photographed with Santa, rides on a holiday train, lovely decor and other extras. Come Thursday, December 3, between 5 and 9 p.m. to the Dr. Jim Vaszauskas Center for the Performing Arts on West Debbie Lane. Since the gift is a toy instead of an entry fee, the night is a gentle way to talk with children about generosity. Parent tip: Please bring a single brand new toy, unwrapped, as your gift. Go early for a shorter Santa wait.

The city page also mentions holiday light displays and photos with Santa.
The festival runs from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, December 4, at Mansfield City Hall on East Broad Street. It also marks the start of a month of holiday events in town, many of which are listed on the same calendar. The pages do not state an admission price, so check the event page before you go. You will find the museum at 604 West Broad Street, near downtown Mansfield, which makes it an easy match for other Hometown Holidays happenings that weekend. The gift-making craft shows children, hands on, how people marked the holidays over a hundred years ago, and the decorated rooms are a calm break from the bigger festivals. As an open house, it lets you drop in and leave whenever suits you during its four hours, with no set arrival time.

Fields at Station 63 turns into a holiday celebration on Friday, December 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. The Hometown Holidays calendar lists free sleigh rides, Christmas inflatables, a Letters to Santa station, a Christmas coloring station, wiffle ball and kickball, a holiday vendor market and hot chocolate and coffee, with alcoholic options available for adults.
Admission is $10, and the calendar asks guests to register through the link on the page. The mix of active play and quieter stations like coloring and letters makes it a flexible evening for children of different ages, and parents can browse the vendor market while kids play. Because the event takes place on an athletic complex, much of it is outdoors, so dress warmly. It is a good option for a Friday night after school lets out for winter break.
Parent tip: Register ahead and dress for the outdoors. Admission is $10.

For one evening the Main Library in Grand Prairie transforms into the North Pole. Families can meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, enjoy festive crafts and activities, and ride the snowy train, with holiday magic around every corner, according to the city calendar.
The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9. It is listed as an all ages program and the cost is free, which makes it an easy weeknight outing. Because it happens at the library, it is also a chance to check out holiday books and sign up for a library card while you are there. The event is part of Main Street Magic, Grand Prairie's month-long holiday celebration. Arrive early if you want extra time with Santa and Mrs. Claus before the crafts get busy.
Parent tip: All ages welcome and no ticket is listed. Arrive early for shorter lines.

Strummin' Through the Snow is a family-friendly concert by the Grand Prairie Library Ukulele Club, held at City Hall as part of Main Street Magic. Bring your holiday cheer and the library will provide the music, the snow and a Mobile Library full of fun, according to the city calendar.
The concert runs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 11, and all ages are welcome. The cost is free, and the library lists contact information for questions at 972-237-5700. Check weather before you go, since part of the experience may be held outdoors, and arrive early for a good spot near the performers.
Parent tip: Free, all ages. Call 972-237-5700 with questions.

The Grand Holiday Craft Fair fills Grand Prairie City Hall with dozens of local artisan vendors on Saturday, December 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Shoppers can find one-of-a-kind gifts, enjoy free hot chocolate and capture a special holiday photo with Santa.
For families, the draw is the free hot chocolate and the Santa photo, which turn a shopping trip into a kid-friendly outing. The event is part of Main Street Magic, the city's month-long celebration in downtown Grand Prairie, and the fair is held indoors, so it works well on a cold or rainy day. Admission is free. Plan to browse early if you want the best selection from vendors, and note that the Santa photo is a good opportunity to get a keepsake without paying for a photo package.
Parent tip: Indoors at City Hall. Arrive early for the best vendor selection.

A story for the drive home
A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.

A bedtime story after seeing SantaRally Takes the Train is a five-minute rhyming picture book about a corgi’s first train ride, hand-painted in real watercolor by Leslie Dunn. $16.99 on Amazon, ages 0 to 8.
