Every Friday morning, the Interurban Railway Museum in downtown Plano hosts a story time at 11 am. The museum opens at 10:30 am, so families can arrive early and settle in. The session is built around songs and stories, plus time exploring the museum and the historic Interurban Car 360.

The program is geared toward children under 5, although older children and their adults are welcome. The Plano calendar lists the series as running through December 18, 2026, so there are several Fridays during the holiday season to choose from.

It is free to attend, and the venue is a small museum, which makes it a calm option on a busy December week. The museum also hosts The Polar Express reading during the Dickens festival in early December.

Parent tip: Doors open at 10:30 am. This is a regular weekly story time rather than a Christmas-only program, so check the museum for any holiday week schedule changes.

Lights on the Farmstead returns for its sixth year at Heritage Farmstead Museum in Plano. Guests stroll a lit quarter-mile path across the historic four-acre farm, past 11 giant displays, 10 animated light scenes, a 30-foot Christmas tree and seven photo spots. The museum lists more than one million lights.

Many nights have a character theme. Examples on the 2026 list include Bluey on Nov 27, Toy Story on Dec 4, Royal Night on Dec 11, Frozen on Dec 18, and Grinch Night on Dec 20, with characters on site from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Santa is there on event nights, where elves take two to four photos on your own device for $10. Concessions are limited to hot cocoa, s'mores, donuts, popcorn and drinks.

Advance tickets are $15 for adults 13 and up and $12 for youth ages 3 to 12, and the museum says the event often sells out.

Parent tip: Buy tickets online ahead, since door prices are higher and nights sell out. The event is cashless, and a free shuttle runs from Pickleball Kingdom. Dec 10 is a 21 and over night.

Silver Star Pictures runs its Santa Portrait Studio at The Shops at Legacy East for the 17th year. Sessions are listed from November 28 through December 22, 2026, and families book a private time slot instead of waiting in a mall line.

The studio sets up a winter scene with real indoor snow and portrait quality lighting. Some packages include a candid video of your child's visit with Santa, which many parents like for toddlers who are hard to pose. Early booking is rewarded with preferred package pricing and more image options.

Packages are listed from $60 to $180, with retouching and custom lab prints available at additional cost. This is a paid photo experience rather than a free community event, so it fits families who want a polished keepsake and a predictable schedule.

Parent tip: Book a session in advance on the Silver Star Pictures site; early reservations get better package pricing.

Deerfield is a Plano neighborhood whose homes decorate heavily for the season, and visitors drive through to see the displays. Viewing runs December 1 through 30, 2026, from 7 to 10 pm on weekdays and 7 to 11 pm on weekends, although most homes switch their lights on at dark.

There is no charge. The neighborhood warns that weekend lines can stretch for hours, and it recommends visiting on a weeknight. Entrances off Legacy Drive have the longest waits, and the neighborhood suggests starting near the back off Quincy Road. Guests are asked to stay in their cars rather than stopping to get out, and not to enter yards or climb on displays.

There are no public restrooms, so plan a stop before you join the line, and bring snacks and a movie or music for kids in the back seat.

Parent tip: Go on a weeknight to avoid hours-long lines, and use the restroom before you arrive since the neighborhood has no public ones.

Dickens in Downtown Plano is the city's free holiday kickoff, held Saturday, December 5, 2026, from 4 to 9 pm in the Downtown Plano Arts District. The streets are set up like an old-fashioned winter village, with coffee and cocoa, food trucks and a vendor village.

For children, the list includes photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, a snow slide, kids crafts, a children's entrepreneur market, a mural painting project and an HEB Family Corner. Storytelling is built in as well: The Polar Express is read at the Interurban Railway Museum at 6:30 and 7:30 pm. The Christmas tree lighting ceremony is at 7 pm, and Christmas Tree Row is open to walk through.

Admission is free, and food and drinks are purchased from local vendors.

Parent tip: Plan to be at the Interurban Railway Museum a bit before the 6:30 or 7:30 pm Polar Express reading, since space inside is limited.

The Plano holiday parade steps off in Downtown Plano on Saturday, December 12, 2026, at 2 pm, and the event page lists it as free to attend. This year's theme, Red, White and Merry, celebrates 250 years of America with stars and stripes mixed with Santa, snowflakes and twinkling lights.

The route starts on 19th Street at M Avenue, heads west on 19th, turns south on K Avenue, goes east on 15th Street, then north on M Avenue and ends at 18th Street. That makes it easy to pick a curbside spot near the Downtown Plano Arts District and keep little ones close to parking.

The event runs about an hour and a half. Community groups, schools and businesses can still register floats or walking groups through the Rotary Parades of Plano site.

Parent tip: Claim a curb spot early along 19th Street or 15th Street. Dress in layers for a December afternoon outdoors.

Santa visits Carpenter Park Recreation Center in Plano on Saturday, December 12, 2026, from 9 to 11 am for a relaxed breakfast with local families. The menu is donuts and hot cocoa, and the city lists the cost at $15 per family rather than per person.

While you eat, kids can write out their own Santa wish list and work on holiday crafts. Little ones also get some one-on-one time with Santa and take home a souvenir photo they help create. The setting is a neighborhood recreation center, so it suits toddlers and early elementary children who like a calm, hands-on morning more than a big crowd.

There is no online registration for this event. Families reserve a spot by phone with the recreation center.

Parent tip: Call Carpenter Park Recreation Center at 972-208-8087 to reserve, since online registration is not offered.

A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.

How do you confirm these events?

We list an event only after we find this season’s date on the host’s own website or an official city or tourism calendar. We last checked every listing on November 2, 2026. Hosts change details, so always confirm on the host’s page before you go.

Event names belong to their hosts. Rally Takes the Train is a family picture book and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any host listed here. Confirm dates, times and prices on each host’s own site before you go.
