The Ford Holiday River Parade is San Antonio's official kickoff to the holiday season. Held the day after Thanksgiving, the 45th edition features illuminated floats, entertainment floats, Santa and Mrs. Claus, and the lighting of 200,000 holiday lights strung through the cypress trees along the River Walk. This year's theme is Holiday Wishes Come True, with the Witte Museum as Grand Marshal for its 100th birthday.

The parade begins at 6 pm at the Tobin Center, and the live broadcast starts at 7:05 pm from the Arneson River Theatre. Families can reserve parade seats, book dinner packages at River Walk restaurants, or use the free viewing area. Reserved tickets are nonrefundable, and children ages 2 and older need a ticket in seated areas. The lights stay on nightly into early January.

Parent tip: Strollers, ice chests and carriers are not allowed on the River Walk during the parade. The Tobin Center also hosts a free viewing party on its River Walk plaza from 5 to 8 pm.

Ballet San Antonio presents The Nutcracker at the Tobin Center's H-E-B Performance Hall over two December weekends. The production is co-choreographed by Haley and Easton Smith and brings together professional dancers, students from the School of Ballet San Antonio and young performers from across Bexar County, with live music by The Orchestra San Antonio.

There are eight performances, with 2 pm matinees on Saturdays and Sundays that suit younger children, and 7:30 pm shows on Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets start at $31. The Tobin describes the show as a cherished holiday tradition for families across South Texas, and seeing local kids on stage can make it especially exciting for young dance fans. The Tobin Library at Oakwell is throwing a Pirate Christmas celebration for families on the first Saturday of December. The library promises holiday crafts, snacks, Santa and more, all wrapped in a playful pirate theme that should appeal to kids who are not quite ready for a quiet storytime.

Dressing up is not required, but the library says costumes are welcome, so little buccaneers can come in their best pirate gear. The party runs for three hours in the afternoon, which gives families flexibility to drop in after lunch or naps. It is listed on the San Antonio Public Library calendar for kids and families, and it is led by Tobin Library staff. Like most library programs, it is a free way to celebrate the season close to home.

Parent tip: Pirate costumes are welcome but optional; call Tobin Library at (210) 207-9040 with questions.

The City of Helotes kicks off the Christmas season with its annual Lighting of the Lights celebration at City Hall. The evening features holiday music from local elementary school choirs and the Helotes Area Community Band, and it builds to the lighting of the city's Christmas tree as City Hall turns into a holiday scene.

The event is free and runs for an hour and a half on a Friday evening, which makes it an easy outing with young children. The city invites families to bring friends and neighbors. There is no shuttle service this year, but on site parking is available at the Municipal Complex. It is a small town tradition and a gentle alternative to the larger downtown San Antonio celebrations.
