Families can meet Santa, stop at holiday photo spots, wander a Holiday Maze, catch musical performances and visit the Destination: Dinosaurs area. General admission starts at $19, children 2 and under are free, and parking is $15. A combo ticket adds an afternoon zoo visit for $10 more. A Sensory Friendly Night on Tuesday, November 17, offers smaller crowds, lower music and sensory havens, with youth tickets at $15.

Bookmarks, the Dallas Public Library branch inside NorthPark Center, is hosting a special guest the morning before Thanksgiving: one of Santa's reindeer. Families meet outside in the CenterPark Garden, where kids can see the reindeer up close and pose for a picture with it and a sleigh.
The event runs from 9 to 11:30 am and is listed as an early literacy program for families. Guests are served in the order they arrive, and staff note they may turn away latecomers so the event can end on time, so plan to arrive well before 11:30. Like all Dallas Public Library programs, it is free and open to the public. The visit is sponsored by Atmos Energy.
Parent tip: Guests are served in order of arrival and latecomers may be turned away, so come early in the window.

Pleasant Grove Branch Library holds a monthly family storytime where parents and young children listen to stories, sing songs and practice early literacy skills together. The December session is a special one: Santa Claus is visiting to share a festive story and pose for holiday portraits with families.
The program runs Saturday, December 5, from 11 am to 1 pm in the children's area. It is aimed at infants, toddlers and preschoolers, with a suggested age of 6 and under, and the listing is written in both English and Spanish. It is free and no registration is mentioned, making it an easy, low-key way for little ones to meet Santa and hear a holiday story.
Parent tip: Best for kids 6 and under; bring a camera for the holiday portraits with Santa.

Dallas West Branch Library is celebrating the season with a holiday story time led by an unusual reader: the Grinch. He will give a special reading of How the Grinch Stole Christmas in the branch auditorium, and families are invited to stay afterward for photos and holiday fun.
The event runs Saturday morning, December 5, from 10 am to noon. The library describes it as perfect for families and little Whos of all ages. It is free, like all Dallas Public Library programs, and no registration is listed. This is a nice pick for kids who are more excited about the Grinch than about Santa, or for families who want a story-centered holiday outing.
Parent tip: The reading comes first, so arrive near 10 am to catch the story before photos.

The Fretz Park Branch Library in North Dallas is inviting families in for holiday pictures with Santa on Saturday afternoon, December 5. The library frames it with a playful twist on the classic poem, noting that it falls the afternoon before Krampusnacht, so Krampus will also be on hand posing for pictures alongside Santa.
The event runs from 1 to 3 pm in Classroom 1 and is listed for all family members. It is free, like all Dallas Public Library programs, and no registration is mentioned on the listing. Bring your own camera or phone for photos. Families with very young or easily startled children may want to know about the Krampus character ahead of time and decide which guest to visit.
Parent tip: Krampus also appears for photos, so preview that with sensitive little ones; bring your own camera or phone.

Families are invited to dress in their best holiday outfits and visit Santa in the children's area of the Hampton-Illinois Branch Library in Oak Cliff. Kids can tell Santa what they are hoping for this year and take holiday photos with him. The listing notes that this Santa speaks both English and Spanish, which makes it a good fit for bilingual families.
The visit runs Sunday, December 6, from 1 to 3 pm. It is free, but registration is required through the library's event page, and registration closes at 11 am the same day. The program is listed for families of all ages under the library's Spanish language programming.

For one week in December, the Hampton-Illinois Branch Library is running a drop-in scavenger hunt with a holiday story attached. According to the library, a winter storm blew away the important things Santa needs to fly his sleigh on Christmas Eve, and kids are asked to search the library to help him find them.
The hunt is an ongoing, all-day event from December 6 through December 12, so families can stop by whenever the branch is open rather than arriving at a set time. It is free and listed for families. This pairs well with the branch's bilingual Santa photo event on the afternoon of December 6 if you want to make one trip do both.
Parent tip: Drop in any time the branch is open that week; it pairs with the Dec 6 Santa photos at the same branch.

Forest Green Branch Library is hosting a gingerbread house workshop with a practical twist. Instead of real cookies and frosting, families use cardboard gingerbread pieces, plastic candies and spackle icing to build a candy-covered house. The library points out that these houses will never go stale or attract ants, so kids can display their creation year after year.
The workshop runs Saturday, December 12, from 11 am to 12:30 pm in the Karen Blumenthal Auditorium. It is free and listed for families, and materials are provided while supplies last. Because it is a craft and not an edible project, it works well for families managing food allergies.
Parent tip: Materials are provided while supplies last, so arrive near the start; spackle can be messy, so dress kids accordingly.

A story for the drive home
A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.
