The Kids Holiday Hunt turns a downtown Spokane shopping trip into a search game. Children ages 12 and under look for hidden holiday characters at 14 participating businesses and record where they found each one in a Holiday Hunt Passport, which families download and print from the Downtown Spokane Partnership website.
Completed passports go to the ICCU Downtown Branch, Monday through Saturday, for a chance to win the grand prize. All entries must be turned in by December 19, and the winner is drawn on December 20. The hunt runs from November 21, so it pairs well with a visit to Santa at River Park Square or the Merry and Magical activities on Post Street.
Parent tip: Print the passport at home before heading downtown, and drop it off at the ICCU Downtown Branch by December 19.

Santa sets up on Level One of the River Park Square atrium, under the mall's 50 foot Christmas tree, from November 21 through Christmas Eve. Visits are free, and families can buy a keepsake photo package if they want one. The page lists hours for every week, from 11 am to 7 pm on early weekdays up to 9 am to 8 pm in the final days, with a 9 am to 5 pm close on December 24. Santa is closed on Thanksgiving.
Reserving a time online helps you pick an ideal slot, and reservations come with a free video message from Santa. Walk ups are welcome on a first come, first served basis. Several themed days run alongside the visits, including Family PJ Parties on Tuesdays, Storytime with Mrs. Claus on Wednesdays from December 2 to 16, and Baby's First on Wednesdays.
Parent tip: Book online for a set time and a video message from Santa; check the weekly hours on the page before you go.

River Park Square opens its holiday season with a big top themed evening. Family activities start at 3 pm and include bath bomb pressing, face painting and balloon twisting. From 5 to 5:30 pm, Santa makes his grand entrance with aerialists and other performers, and the mall lights its 50 foot Christmas tree in the atrium.
After the lighting, the festivities continue until 7 pm, and Santa photos begin at 5:45 pm. Walk ups are welcome as availability allows, or families can reserve a photo session ahead of time. Earlier in the day, from noon to 5 pm, the Downtown Spokane Partnership hosts Merry and Magical Lane on Post Street with live entertainment, sing alongs and family activities. The event is free to attend, and photo packages are optional purchases.
Parent tip: Reserve a Santa photo time online if you want to skip the walk up line, which starts at 5:45 pm.

The Spokane Symphony offers a sensory friendly performance of The Nutcracker on Wednesday, December 2, at The Fox. Doors open at 5 pm and the show begins at 6 pm. State Street Ballet and local dancers perform, with Tchaikovsky's score played live by the Spokane Symphony under conductor James Lowe.
This performance is designed for people with sensory needs for whom a traditional show might be hard to attend. Changes include altered lighting levels, the freedom to move around during the performance and sensory support tools. It is a gentle way to introduce young children to the ballet a day before the full run of performances begins. Ticket information is on the Spokane Symphony page, and the Fox Theater sits at 1001 West Sprague Avenue in downtown Spokane, a short walk from the River Park Square holiday tree.
Parent tip: Arrive when doors open at 5 pm to settle in before the 6 pm start.

River Park Square pairs its season of Santa visits with a weekly Storytime with Mrs. Claus. The story hour runs on Wednesdays, December 2, 9 and 16, from 11 am to noon, at the downtown Spokane mall where Santa sits beneath the 50 foot Christmas tree in the Level One atrium.
The mall lists the storytime as one of its special events to combine with a Santa visit. Visits with Santa are free, and photo packages are optional. Wednesdays are also Baby's First days, which makes this a good morning for families with little ones. On Monday to Wednesday visits before December 3, buying an Elite photo package earns a two hour parking validation for the River Park Square garage.
Parent tip: Pair storytime with a Santa visit the same morning; book a photo time online if you want to avoid a wait.

The Spokane Symphony calls The Nutcracker Spokane's favorite holiday tradition. State Street Ballet joins more than 90 local dancers on stage at The Fox, and the orchestra plays Tchaikovsky's score live, which makes it a memorable first ballet for many children.
Performances run from Thursday, December 3 through Sunday, December 6. Evening shows open doors at 6:30 pm with a 7:30 pm curtain, and matinees open doors at 2 pm with a 3 pm curtain. The ticket page lists Thursday, Friday, Saturday matinee, Saturday evening and Sunday performances. Families with children who prefer a calmer setting can choose the sensory friendly performance on December 2 instead. Tickets for each performance are sold through the Spokane Symphony box office, and patrons who choose three or more shows can save 10 percent with a Curated by You subscription package.
Parent tip: A Saturday or Sunday matinee is the easiest choice for younger children.

River Park Square's annual Blitzen Bash brings Santa's reindeer to downtown Spokane on Saturday, December 5, from 11 am to 3 pm. Families can get an up close look at the reindeer and take part in festive, family friendly activities in the First Level Atrium. The mall says more activities and details will be announced closer to the date.
Santa is in the mall throughout the season, so the bash is an easy day to combine the reindeer with a Santa visit. Photo sessions can be reserved online, and STCU members save $10 on a photo package when paying with an STCU card. Santa photo hours run all day at the mall that Saturday, from 10 am to 8 pm, so families can arrive for the reindeer and stay for a visit under the 50 foot tree.
Parent tip: Check the event page close to the date for the full activity list.

River Park Square sets aside a private early morning on Sunday, December 6, from 9 to 10:30 am, for children and families who would benefit from a quieter, more relaxed visit with Santa. The session avoids the usual crowds, bright lights and loud sounds of a busy mall day.
The visit with Santa is free, and photo packages are available for purchase. Advance reservations are required so that each family has a comfortable experience, and the mall links to a ticketing page for booking. STCU members receive $10 off a photo package when paying with an STCU card on site. Because the session takes place before regular crowds arrive, children can take their time, and families can capture a holiday memory with Santa in a calm, welcoming setting that respects each child's pace.
Parent tip: Reserve ahead, since this private session only admits families with a booking.

SnowFest fills Festival Street on Post with winter fun on Saturday, December 12, from 1 to 8 pm. The street party features live music, seasonal food, snow machines, holiday sing alongs, winter games and a Santa Crawl costume contest. The highlight is the Great Snow Summoning, a festive countdown that ends in a coordinated snowfall moment.
The Downtown Spokane Partnership says family friendly activities and nonalcoholic drinks are available throughout the event, with a separate beer garden for guests 21 and older. SnowFest is timed alongside the BrrrZAAR at River Park Square and Christmas Tree Elegance, so families can easily fold in other downtown holiday stops the same day. The afternoon start makes it easy to come for an hour of games and music, and the evening countdown gives older kids something to look forward to as the lights come on downtown.
Parent tip: Plan around the snowfall countdown, and note the beer garden area is for adults 21 and older.

Moran Prairie Library on Spokane's South Hill hosts a Gift Making Workshop on Tuesday, December 15, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Children create a one of a kind homemade gift to give to someone special, then can make their own wrapping paper and card so the present is ready to give.
The workshop is aimed at ages 5 and up with their families, and kids 8 and younger must come with an adult. No registration is listed, so families can simply drop in. The after school timing makes it an easy stop on a weekday, and it is a nice way for children to make something personal for a parent, grandparent or teacher before the holidays.
Parent tip: Children 8 and under need an adult with them.

The Spokane Symphony screens the full film Elf on the big screen at The Fox while the orchestra performs John Debney's score live. The story follows Buddy, who was accidentally carried to the North Pole as a toddler, raised among Santa's elves, and later travels to New York to find his father.
There are two performances: Saturday, December 19, at 7:30 pm and Sunday, December 20, at 3 pm. The Sunday afternoon show is the easier fit for younger children. A live orchestra paired with a familiar movie can be a friendly introduction to symphony music for school age kids. Tickets are sold through the Spokane Symphony, and the Fox Theater sits in the heart of downtown, close to the River Park Square tree and other holiday stops on the same weekend.
Parent tip: Choose the Sunday 3 pm performance for younger children.

The City of Spokane Valley kicks off the holiday season with a festive tree lighting featuring Santa, along with performances by a children's choir and a band. Free cookies and cocoa are served, which makes it an easy, relaxed evening outing for families.
After the tree is lit, the fun moves indoors for storytime with Santa in the library, a nice option for younger children who would rather sit and listen than stand in the cold. The event runs from 5:30 to 7 pm, so it works well even for little ones with an early bedtime. The city's holidays page does not name the exact location or say whether there is any cost, so check the city's tree lighting page before you head out. The city points families to SpokaneValleyWA.gov/TreeLighting for full details.
Parent tip: Check SpokaneValleyWA.gov/TreeLighting for the location before you go; storytime with Santa follows the lighting inside the library.
