The Downtown Seattle Association's annual Tree Lighting Celebration takes over Westlake Park the day after Thanksgiving. Festivities start at 11 am with family friendly craft making, costumed characters, sweet treats and other surprises in the park.
The main event comes at 5 pm, when the huge holiday tree and the star are lit, immediately followed by a fireworks show. The celebration is free. The Westlake Park Holiday Carousel also runs nearby from Nov. 27 to Jan. 3, so families can make a full afternoon of it. Expect big crowds downtown for the lighting, and plan transit or parking ahead. The celebration is presented by Amazon, and the association's Love Your Seattle site lists more seasonal events around downtown.
Parent tip: Come early for the daytime crafts and characters, and pick a viewing spot before 5 pm.

The Skyway Library is kicking off December with a gingerbread house workshop for kids. Each child gets to build and decorate a house of their own, and all materials are provided, so there is nothing to bring except some creativity.
The workshop is for ages 5 to 12, and children 5 to 8 need to have an adult with them. Space is limited, so the library asks families to register online or call the library at 206.772.5541. It is free and sponsored by the Friends of Skyway Library. Reasonable accommodation is available by emailing access@kcls.org at least seven days ahead. Plan to carry a finished house home carefully.
Parent tip: Register or call 206.772.5541, since space is limited; bring a box or bag to carry the house home.

The Covington Library's Super Tuesday STEM series has a holiday special in December. Kids build a 2D holiday house out of graham crackers and goodies, a festive spin on the engineering and design challenges the series usually offers.
The program is for ages 5 and older, and children 7 and younger must be with an adult. Siblings are welcome. Registration is required, and the library asks families to arrive by 6 pm. It is free and sponsored by the Friends of Covington Library. If you prefer a less messy version of a gingerbread house project, the flat graham cracker format is a good fit for younger builders.
Parent tip: Register ahead and arrive by 6 pm; children 7 and under need an adult with them.

Are there Christmas train rides for kids in Seattle?
Yes, but they have their own guide. Santa trains and holiday train rides are listed in our Seattle Christmas train rides guide, so this page sticks to story times, Santa visits and other events off the rails.
How do you confirm these events?
We list an event only after we find this season’s date on the host’s own website or an official city or tourism calendar. We last checked every listing on November 2, 2026. Hosts change details, so always confirm on the host’s page before you go.
Event names belong to their hosts. Rally Takes the Train is a family picture book and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any host listed here. Confirm dates, times and prices on each host’s own site before you go.
