Christmas Train Rides in Washington (2026)

Washington has holiday trains from the Cascade foothills to the Palouse. The licensed Polar Express runs in Chehalis, halfway between Seattle and Portland. Near Mount Rainier, a steam train carries families back to a 1930s logging camp for a Christmas story told by actors. The Northwest Railway Museum has run a Santa Train in the Snoqualmie Valley every year since 1969, and there are Santa trains near Vancouver in Yacolt and west of Spokane in Reardan. Neighboring states are on our Polar Express and Christmas train guide.

The Chehalis-Centralia Railroad, a nonprofit heritage line, runs Washington’s only licensed Polar Express from its depot in Chehalis. In 1920s coaches with tables for four, the cast performs, the book is read aloud, and the chefs bring hot chocolate and a chocolate peppermint cookie. At the North Pole, Santa and his helpers climb aboard, and every child gets a silver sleigh bell. The round trip takes 75 minutes.

Coach seats are $69 each; parties smaller than four can buy the empty seats at their table or share it. First class rides in a 1920s business car, sold by the room. The old cars have limited heat and one small restroom, so bring blankets. Strollers stay at the depot, and the narrow doors cannot take wheelchairs or walkers. Sales are online only and final, so double-check your date. Non-dairy, vegan and gluten-free treats can be requested at booking.

Steam Into Christmas is a story you ride through. The train leaves Elbe, in the foothills below Mount Rainier, and carries families back to the 1930s and the North Star Logging Camp, where a crew of timber workers tells how they helped save Christmas. Professional actors play the Kringle family, who host the coaches with songs and stories, and Santa and Mrs. Claus come through to visit every family.

Everyone gets hot cocoa, a fresh-baked cookie and a collectible ornament. First Class adds a reserved table and a souvenir mug. Most trains are pulled by one of the railroad’s historic steam engines, with a diesel standing in when weather or maintenance requires. Arrive 30 minutes early to pick up tickets, and park across the tracks by the historic Elbe church. There is a wheelchair lift, and allergy-friendly cookies and dairy-free cider are available on request.

The Northwest Railway Museum’s Santa Train has been a Snoqualmie Valley tradition since 1969, and the North Pole Limited is the longer version. Families ride 10 to 15 minutes from North Bend to the museum’s decorated Railway History Campus and spend about an hour there with cookies and hot chocolate, cider or coffee, seasonal crafts and the exhibits. Santa waits inside the museum’s restored chapel car, every child gets a present, and the train will not leave until everyone in line has had a turn.

Tickets are timed and needed for everyone 2 and up, and they include a return visit to the Train Shed on another day. The boarding line is outdoors, so dress for rain or snow. There are no restrooms on the train. The depot is just behind the Shell station in North Bend, with free downtown parking.

The Yuletide Express is the museum’s short Santa train, and the museum itself suggests it for younger kids who are not ready for a two-hour outing. It leaves the historic Snoqualmie Depot in decorated antique coaches, heads west toward Snoqualmie Falls, pauses at the crest for the view down the valley, and comes back. Santa walks through and visits every family, his helper hands each child a surprise gift, and everyone gets a peppermint stick on the way off.

Staff will take photos on your own phone for free. It runs only on three Fridays, hourly from 9 to 4, with free parking downtown. Bring nothing but water on board, and use the depot restrooms first.

The museum posts special-event tickets separately from regular admission, so check its event page before you go. The collection is a good bonus for train-loving kids, with steam and diesel engines, a Spokane streetcar and model railroads indoors.
