The Main Library is hosting a short, family friendly taste of the holiday ballet season. Costumed dancers from Mark Foehringer Dance Project perform selections from their Nutcracker Sweets show, which is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, in the Children's Creative Center on the second floor.
At about 45 minutes, it is a manageable introduction to ballet for young children who might not sit through a full theater performance. The show is free and drop-in, and it is sponsored by the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library. The library is wheelchair accessible, and the performance is presented in English. It is a gentle way to start the holiday season with kids who love music, costumes and dancing.
Parent tip: The performance is in the second floor Children's Creative Center at the Main Library; seating is first come, first served.

Ghirardelli Square kicks off the season the day after Thanksgiving with a lighting ceremony for its 46 foot Christmas tree. Santa and his elf are on hand, the San Francisco Boys Chorus performs, and families can follow along for a festive sing along, Santa visits, letters to Santa and candy giveaways.
If the lighting night is too busy, Santa and the elf return on three more Friday evenings in December, from 4 to 7 pm on December 4, 11 and 18. The square overlooks the bay near Fisherman's Wharf, so it pairs well with an early dinner or a walk along the waterfront. The page does not list a price for the lighting or the visits.
Parent tip: Kids can bring a letter for Santa; the Friday visits from 4 to 7 pm are a quieter alternative to the lighting night.

The North Beach Branch offers an after school holiday activity for early elementary students. Kids explore shapes while making their own seasonal ornament to take home, and there are plenty of LEGOs for free building once the craft is done.
The program is aimed at ages 5 to 8, but the library notes there will also be toys for younger siblings to play with, which helps if you are bringing the whole family. It runs for 45 minutes on a Thursday afternoon in the branch community room. Like other SFPL programs, it is free and drop-in, and it is sponsored by the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library. The ornament makes a nice keepsake for the tree.
Parent tip: Younger siblings are welcome; the library will have toys out for them.

The North Beach Branch hosts a relaxed holiday crafting party in its community room on the first Saturday of December. Families can make handmade cards and ornaments for loved ones, with video versions of classic winter tales playing and a warm drink to sip while everyone works.
Because it runs from 10 am to 3 pm, you can stop by whenever it fits nap schedules or other plans rather than arriving at a set start time. Materials are provided for library craft programs unless noted, so there is nothing to bring. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library and is free and drop-in. It is a nice way to make homemade gifts for grandparents or teachers before the holidays.
Parent tip: Drop in any time between 10 am and 3 pm; all craft materials are provided.

In partnership with San Francisco Ballet, the Main Library offers a holiday program that starts with a 30 minute talk about the company's long history of performing the Nutcracker. That is followed by a 30 minute Nutcracker inspired chair dance class set to the famous Tchaikovsky music.
The library describes the class as fun, easy and suitable for all ages and abilities, so grandparents, parents and kids can all join in from a seat. It is a good pick for school age children who are excited about seeing the ballet this season or who simply love the music. The program is free and drop-in and takes place in the Latino/Hispanic Community Room at the Main Library on the Saturday before Christmas.
Parent tip: Bring friends and family; the dance portion is done seated, so it works for all abilities.

The Richmond Branch of the San Francisco Public Library invites families to make traditional Filipino Christmas lanterns, called parols, with guests from the Asian Unification Project. Along with the hands on craft, kids learn a little about Filipino culture and how the star lantern is part of the holiday season.
The workshop is meant for children and their caregivers working together, and it runs for two hours on the Saturday before Christmas. As with other SFPL craft programs, materials are provided unless the page notes otherwise. The event is free, drop-in and sponsored by the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library. Your child will come home with a handmade lantern that can hang in a window through the holidays.
Parent tip: Plan to stay with your child, since the workshop is designed for kids and caregivers together.

The Merced Branch of the San Francisco Public Library is celebrating the Nutcracker ballet with a special storytime just before Christmas. Children listen, dance and play along with stories about dancing candy canes, waltzing flowers and sugar plum fairies, so it suits wiggly toddlers as well as preschoolers who love to move.
The program is designed for children ages 5 and younger and their caregivers. Like other SFPL storytimes, it blends books, songs and rhymes, and it takes place in the general floor area of the branch. It runs for about an hour on a weekday morning during winter break, which makes it a calm, free outing when school is out. SFPL programs are drop-in unless noted, and all locations are wheelchair accessible.
Parent tip: No registration is needed. For accommodations such as ASL, SFPL asks families to call (415) 557-4557 at least 3 business days ahead.

Glowfari returns to Oakland Zoo for its seventh year with hundreds of all new animal lanterns. This season's themes include California forests, San Francisco Bay, Montana, the Florida Everglades and Hawaii, with the displays highlighting how species interact with their habitats. It is an evening walk that keeps kids busy spotting animals they recognize.
The festival runs from November 6 to January 31 and is closed on several Mondays and Tuesdays, Thanksgiving, and December 24 and 25. Tickets are dated, non refundable and go on sale 28 days before each visit date at 9 am, with savings for buying ahead. Parking is included with admission. Add ons such as a light up toy or a Gondola Express Pass can be bought in advance, and members receive a discount.
Parent tip: Buy tickets as soon as your date opens 28 days out; the zoo notes some lights may be photosensitive.

The City of Pleasanton holds its Hometown Holiday Celebration on the first Saturday of December. The evening starts at 5 pm with the Hometown Holiday Parade along Main Street in downtown Pleasanton, with floats, marching bands and local community groups.
Right after the parade, the tree lighting ceremony takes place in front of the Museum on Main. It includes live musical entertainment, the lighting of the tree by the mayor and city council, and a special appearance by Santa. Because the parade runs after dark, it is a festive way for kids to see the lights and the floats together. Downtown streets fill up, so plan your parking and arrive early to find a spot along the route.
Parent tip: Bring warm layers for an outdoor evening, and arrive early to claim a curbside spot on Main Street.

Winter Wonderlab is the Bay Area Discovery Museum's seasonal festival for young children. Kids can glide across an iceless skating rink, decorate giant play gingerbread houses with oversized candy, tinker in the Toy Maker's Studio and add their creation to a growing toy town, and make winter collages at a cozy craft table. Infants and crawlers get their own soft play space.
The festival runs on weekends from November 21 through January 3, plus Thanksgiving week and winter break weekdays. The museum is closed November 26, December 24 and 25, and January 1. Winter Wonderlab is included with general admission, which the page lists at $25 to $30, and members and babies under 1 get in free. Discounted EBT and WIC tickets are available in person.

Walnut Creek's annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony marks the start of the season in Civic Park. Families can gather for complimentary hot cocoa and live holiday carolers, then watch the tree sparkle to life as the sun sets. Frosty the Snowman will be there for a meet and greet, which is usually the highlight for younger kids.
The ceremony is free and open to the public, and it lasts about an hour, so it works even on a school night. It is presented by the City of Walnut Creek and the Walnut Creek Downtown Association. Walnut Creek on Ice opens in the same park, so families can stay for skating, holiday lights, dinner or shopping downtown after the lighting.
Parent tip: Arrive a little before 5:30 pm to get a view of the tree; skating at Walnut Creek on Ice is nearby in Civic Park.

A story for the drive home
A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.
