For more than 50 years, Great Lakes artist Alexander Burns Cook created the original art for the National Museum of the Great Lakes' annual Christmas cards. On Saturday, November 28, the museum invites kids to carry on the tradition. Young artists look at examples of Cook's holiday work, then use watercolors to paint their own Christmas cards to take home and share.
The drop in activity runs from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, and no registration is required. Art supplies are provided, and the activity is included with regular museum admission. Families can also watch screenings of The Adventures of Kitty Smoke and Her Friends, based on Cook's children's story, and pick up coloring pages and activity sheets. The program ties in with the temporary exhibit An Artist at the Water's Edge.
Parent tip: Drop in any time during the three hour window; supplies are provided.

The Point Place Branch of the Toledo Lucas County Public Library hosts Winter Wonderland on Wednesday, December 2, from 3:30 to 5 pm. The library sums it up as crafts, cookies and Santa, all in one holiday event for all ages.
The program is listed for kids ages 6 to 10 as well as all ages, so younger and older siblings can come together. No registration is required, and there is no cost. The after school time slot works well for a quick stop on the way home, and children can make a seasonal craft, enjoy a cookie and see Santa in a cozy neighborhood library setting rather than a busy mall. This is the first of several Winter Wonderland events across the library system this season, with another at the King Road Branch on December 8.
Parent tip: No sign up is needed; arrive early in the window for the shortest wait to see Santa.

The National Museum of the Great Lakes on Toledo's east side brings back its Christmas Tree Ship tradition on Saturday, December 5. Families gather to watch Santa Claus arrive by tugboat with a boatload of Christmas trees, and museum admission is free all day. The event is presented by UToledo Health.
The tradition honors the schooner Rouse Simmons, the original Christmas Tree Ship, whose captain was remembered as Captain Santa for giving trees to families in need. The museum sells live trees, which must be ordered by 1 pm on Sunday, November 29, and also collects gift cards for local families. With free admission, it is a good day to explore the museum's ships and exhibits with kids after Santa docks.
Parent tip: Dress for time outside on the riverfront while you wait for Santa's tugboat.

Imagination Station, Toledo's hands on science center on the riverfront, runs a Gingerbread Houses Workshop on four Saturdays: December 5, 12, 19 and 26, each at 2 pm. The museum describes it as a holiday favorite with a twist, where kids use their engineering skills to build their very own candy covered festive home.
The workshop is listed under the museum's Think Tank programs, and each date has its own ticket link on the events page, so plan to book ahead. The December 26 session falls during winter break, which makes it a handy outing after Christmas. Families can pair the workshop with time in the science center's exhibits on the same visit, from the riverfront museum's interactive exhibit floors.
Parent tip: Book the specific date through the events page ticket link, since each session is ticketed separately.

The Washington Branch Library hosts a Gingerbread Storytime on Friday, December 11, from 11 am to noon. Children ages 2 to 5 and their grown ups are invited to talk, sing, read, write and play together as the librarian shares stories, music and movement.
The hour ends with a special themed craft, so little ones go home with a gingerbread creation of their own. There is no cost and no registration is required. Storytimes like this one build early literacy skills through play, and the seasonal theme makes it a cozy December morning outing for preschoolers who are not yet in school all day. Come ready to move and sing, since music and movement are part of the hour along with the stories and the craft.
Parent tip: Plan to stay with your child; the program is designed for kids and grown ups to take part together.

The program is open to all ages, free and requires no registration. Bring a camera, and plan to stay for a craft after the story. The branch is on Glanzman Road in south Toledo, and the program lasts one hour, which suits younger children who tire quickly in the evening.

The program is aimed at children ages 6 to 10, is free and does not require registration. Because the gingerbread houses are crafted rather than baked, there is no mess of icing at home, and the finished piece can be kept as a decoration. The branch runs other Handmade Holiday nights in December, including Hot Cocoa Reindeer on December 14 and Beeswax Candles on December 21. The branch is on Dustin Road in Oregon, east of the Maumee River.

A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.

Are there Christmas train rides for kids in Toledo?
Yes, but they have their own guide. Santa trains and holiday train rides are listed in our Toledo Christmas train rides guide, so this page sticks to story times, Santa visits and other events off the rails.
How do you confirm these events?
We list an event only after we find this season’s date on the host’s own website or an official city or tourism calendar. We last checked every listing on November 2, 2026. Hosts change details, so always confirm on the host’s page before you go.
Event names belong to their hosts. Rally Takes the Train is a family picture book and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any host listed here. Confirm dates, times and prices on each host’s own site before you go.
