The City of Syracuse hosts its annual tree lighting in Clinton Square on Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. It is the traditional start of the downtown holiday season, and families can pair it with a look at the decorated storefronts in the Downtown Committee's 2026 Window Wonderland contest.
The Downtown Committee's holiday page does not list a start time yet, so check closer to the date. Clinton Square is also home to the downtown ice rink, and the city holds a Menorah Lighting during Hanukkah. Bundle up, since the ceremony is held outdoors in late November.
Parent tip: The start time is not posted yet; check the Downtown Committee or City of Syracuse pages the week before.

Baldwinsville Public Library hosts a different drop-in craft each week, and on Friday, December 11, the project is ornament painting. Children and teens can stop by any time from 3 to 5 pm to paint an ornament to take home or give as a gift.
Because it is a drop-in program, there is no need to plan around a set start time, which makes it easy to fit in after school. No registration is listed and there is no listed cost. The library runs other seasonal drop-in crafts in December too, including a beaded snowflake on December 4 and a light-up snowman on December 18. Drop-in sessions run for two hours, so even busy families can stop by briefly.
Parent tip: Drop in any time between 3 and 5 pm.

Little ones can dance, move and groove at Baldwinsville Public Library on Friday, December 18, from 10 to 11 am. Gail of Gail's Lil Dancin' Pals leads a creative music and movement class that encourages movement and play through dance, and this session has a winter holiday theme.
The class is for children from 6 months to 5 years old. It is held in person, parents must attend with their child, and registration is required. The library does not list a fee. A morning dance class is a good way to burn off energy for toddlers and preschoolers who are excited about the holidays. Siblings and caregivers should plan to stay for the full hour together.
Parent tip: Parents must attend with their child; register ahead.

Baldwinsville Public Library's annual gingerbread house class returns on Saturday, December 19, from 1 to 4 pm. Children create their own custom gingerbread house, and library staff provide the gingerbread, instructions and a building demonstration.
Each child should bring a bag of their favorite candy for decorating. Adults are asked to stay in the room to help children with construction. Registration is required, and the library asks you to register each child attending so there is enough gingerbread for everyone. Please arrive by 1 pm, since the class starts with the demonstration. The library does not list a fee on the event listing. The class runs for three hours, so plan for an afternoon at the library.
Parent tip: Arrive by 1 pm for the demonstration and bring a bag of candy per child.

A story for the drive home
A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.
