Santa visits the Botanical Gardens on two days over Thanksgiving weekend. On Friday, November 27 he joins the evening Poinsettias After Dark hours from 5 to 9 pm, and on Saturday, November 28 he returns during the day from 10 am to 2 pm. The colorful Poinsettia Exhibit makes the backdrop for family photos.
Kids can complete a festive scavenger hunt while exploring the conservatory, and they are invited to bring a letter to Santa or write one on arrival. The holiday train display also returns this year, with a G scale train running through the Bonsai house surrounded by poinsettias, set up with help from the Medina Railroad Museum. Visits with Santa are included with regular admission, and tickets can be purchased online through the gardens' website.
Parent tip: Bring a letter for Santa or write one at the gardens. Pick the Friday evening for a nighttime visit or Saturday for a daytime one.

Buffalo Place's annual Downtown Christmas Tree Lighting opens the free skating season at Rotary Rink in Fountain Plaza. Skating starts at 5 pm, and at 6 pm the crowd counts down to the lighting of the official tree, followed by fireworks over the plaza.
After the fireworks the evening keeps going with visits with Santa from 6:30 to 8 pm, holiday gifts, face painting, short train rides for children and more skating. All activities are free and open to the public. Skating itself is free, and rental skates cost $2 for children and $3 for adults, so families who own skates can skip the rental line. It is an outdoor event in December in Buffalo, so plan on warm layers for little ones who want to stay for both the lighting and Santa.
Parent tip: Santa visits run 6:30 to 8 pm. Bring your own skates to avoid the rental line.

The library will have snacks and drinks for people watching, and outside food and drink are allowed, so families can bring their own treats too. The Central Library in downtown Buffalo hosts a free Movie Matinee of The Polar Express on Wednesday, December 23. The showing starts at 3 pm in the library's Ring of Knowledge space and is listed for children, teens and adults.
The G rated animated film follows a doubting young boy who takes a magical train ride to the North Pole and learns that the wonder of the season stays with those who believe. The library lists a running time of about two hours, so it fits nicely into a winter break afternoon when kids are out of school. It is a low key, no cost way to get into the holiday spirit downtown, and it pairs well with a stop at the nearby Fountain Plaza rink.
Parent tip: The listing gives a run time of about two hours; arrive a little early for seats.

Are there Christmas train rides for kids in Buffalo?
Yes, but they have their own guide. Santa trains and holiday train rides are listed in our Buffalo Christmas train rides guide, so this page sticks to story times, Santa visits and other events off the rails.
How do you confirm these events?
We list an event only after we find this season’s date on the host’s own website or an official city or tourism calendar. We last checked every listing on November 2, 2026. Hosts change details, so always confirm on the host’s page before you go.
Event names belong to their hosts. Rally Takes the Train is a family picture book and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any host listed here. Confirm dates, times and prices on each host’s own site before you go.
