Holiday Enchantment turns the Connecticut Science Center on the Hartford riverfront into a season long holiday celebration. New this year is Enchanted Lights, an interactive floor of colorful lights that reacts as kids stomp, jump and dance. There is also an indoor sock skating rink, holiday photo backdrops, seasonal science demonstrations with snowy reactions, and the Winter Wonder Lab maker space where kids craft a festive project to take home.

Santa visits on select Saturdays and Sundays, sometimes joined by Mrs. Claus, for photos and holiday wishes. Most Santa sessions run 11 am to 3 pm, with a shorter noon to 2 pm visit on December 5. Everything is included with general admission, and it is also the last chance to see the Sharks exhibition. Parking is in the Science Center Garage with its entrance on Grove Street.

Parent tip: Check the Santa schedule before you go, since he only visits on listed weekend dates. Kids will want socks for the skating rink.

Hartford Stage brings back its holiday tradition, A Christmas Carol, from November 21 through December 27, 2026. The production follows Ebenezer Scrooge on his journey through past, present and future, combining music, spectacle and storytelling, and the theater calls it the perfect way to celebrate the season with family and friends.

Performances run several days a week, with evening shows and weekend matinees. Off-peak performances, marked on the theater's calendar, save $10 on regular tickets and offer youth tickets at 50% off. A sensory friendly performance is scheduled for Saturday, December 5, at 2 pm, with open captioned and audio described matinees on December 6 and 12. The show page links to recommended ages and content warnings, which are worth reading before bringing younger children.

Parent tip: Choose an off-peak date for half price youth tickets, and review the recommended ages note on the show page before booking for young kids.

On the Friday after Thanksgiving, Hartford Public Library's Downtown Library invites families to stop by the Book Nook between 3 and 5 pm. Kids can choose books for weekend reading and pick up a Holiday Craft activity kit to take home and make together.

The program is listed for youth and families, and there is no fee listed. Because it is a drop-in pickup rather than a scheduled class, it is easy to fit into a long holiday weekend, whether you are downtown for Winterfest skating in nearby Bushnell Park or just looking for a calm activity after Thanksgiving. Coming earlier in the two hour window leaves more time to browse the shelves for weekend books.

Parent tip: Come early in the 3 to 5 pm window to leave time to choose books along with the craft kit.

The program is listed for youth, teens, families and adults, so it works as a shared project for a parent and child or for older kids who enjoy a more detailed craft. There is no fee listed for the program. The late morning weekday time suits homeschool families, preschoolers with a caregiver, or anyone with a day off. The program is for children ages 4 and up and takes place in the Children's Program Room. Registration opened October 29 and is required, so check the library's event page for open spots. A story for the drive home

A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.
