The touring Dr. Seuss Grinch musical is on the Shubert Theatre calendar for a run from Wednesday, November 18, through Sunday, November 22. The show brings the familiar story of the Grinch, Cindy-Lou Who and the town of Whoville to the stage with songs, and it is one of the earliest holiday shows of the season in downtown New Haven.

Tickets are sold through the Shubert, and the event page lists the individual performance times. The theatre also has a separate weekday student performance for school groups. Because the run is only five days long and falls right before Thanksgiving, families planning to go should pick a performance and buy seats early. The theatre is at 247 College Street in downtown New Haven, close to the Green and to several parking garages.

Parent tip: Check the Shubert event page for exact performance times, since the run lasts only five days.

The Shubert Theatre returns to the Mitchell Branch of the New Haven Free Public Library for a family workshop built around The Hip Hop Nutcracker, the holiday dance show coming to the Shubert stage in December. The library lists it for families with children roughly 6 to 12, and the theatre describes its library workshops as a mix of book reading or story time, arts and crafts, and dance activity.

The hour is free. Every child receives a goodie bag and a free book from Read to Grow. Registration is requested through the library calendar, and the room holds about 30 people, so signing up early is a good idea. This is a separate session from the Saturday workshop at the Stetson Branch, which makes it a handy weekday option for after school.

Parent tip: Register through the library event page, since seats are limited to about 30. Each child gets a free book to take home.

The Shubert Theatre brings a free family workshop to the Stetson Branch of the New Haven Free Public Library to celebrate its holiday show, The Hip Hop Nutcracker. Activities may include a story time, arts and crafts, and a dance activity inspired by the show, held in the branch's Young Minds Discovery Room on the first floor.

Every child goes home with a goodie bag and a free book from Read to Grow. The workshop is listed for families with children from babies through age 12, and it lasts one hour on a Saturday afternoon. A related Shubert workshop for ages 6 to 11 is also held at the Mitchell Branch on Wednesday, December 2, from 4 to 5 pm, where registration is requested. Both are a gentle way to introduce kids to the Nutcracker story before the holidays.

Parent tip: Each child receives a free book and goodie bag. If Saturday does not work, the Mitchell Branch version on December 2 asks families to register.

The Hip Hop Nutcracker comes to the Shubert Theatre for one evening performance on Tuesday, December 22, at 7 pm. The theatre calls it a holiday mash-up for the whole family: a contemporary dance version of the classic story set to Tchaikovsky's music, performed by a dozen dancers with a DJ and a violinist. Hip hop pioneer Kurtis Blow opens the show with a short set.

Tickets are on sale through the Shubert. Lobby doors open one hour before showtime and theatre doors open about 30 minutes before, and late arrivals may be asked to wait in the lobby until a good break. Group rates are available. Families who want a preview can look for the free Shubert family workshops at New Haven library branches earlier in December.

Parent tip: Arrive early, since latecomers may be held in the lobby. Lobby doors open an hour before the 7 pm start.

This take home craft contest from the West Haven Public Library asks children in kindergarten through fourth grade to turn a blank snowman into something from a book they love, whether a character, an animal or an object from a story. Families pick up a snowman at the Ora Mason Library between Tuesday, December 1, and Monday, December 7, decorate it at home with any supplies they have, and bring it back by Friday, December 11.

Voting runs December 14 to 18 and the winner is announced Monday, December 21. The winner receives a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card, and every participant gets a small goodie bag. No registration is needed. The library asks kids to write their name, phone number and the title of the book that inspired them on the back. It is an easy project for busy weeks, since all the work happens at home.

Parent tip: Write your child's name, phone number and the book title on the back before returning the snowman by Dec 11.

The West Haven Public Library invites children ages 3 to 8 to come in their comfiest clothes and gather around a pretend fireplace for stories and hot chocolate. The special guest is Lollipop, a miniature pony who visits as a reindeer for the evening, which makes this a sweet first holiday outing for little ones.

The program runs one hour in the Connie Sacco Room at the main library. Registration is required and spaces are limited, and the library asks families to register each child individually. Questions can go to the children's librarian listed on the event page by email or by phone at (203) 937-4233. The main library is at 300 Elm Street in West Haven, a short drive from downtown New Haven, and the program fits neatly into an early weekday evening.

Parent tip: Register each child separately, since spots are limited. Comfy clothes are encouraged.

The Ora Mason Library in West Haven marks the first day of winter with an evening party for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. The plan includes winter themed games such as a Snowman Snowball Toss and a Blizzard Blast, and the night wraps up with kids decorating and eating their own polar bear cupcakes.

The party runs from 6 to 7:30 pm on Monday, December 21, which falls during the school holiday week. Registration is required, and the program room holds a small group of about 14, so it is worth signing up as soon as possible through the library calendar. The Ora Mason branch is at 260 Benham Street. Because the party falls on the first night of winter, it makes a cheerful start to the school vacation week for younger elementary kids.

Parent tip: Spots are very limited, so register early. Plan for a cupcake treat at the end.

Every year from Thanksgiving to late January, the Eli Whitney Museum in Hamden sets up its A.C. Gilbert train display, a four track layout of American Flyer model trains, the toy line made by New Haven's A.C. Gilbert Company. Visitors can drive their own train on the layout, and one engine carries a tiny camera that shows the trip from the engineer's seat.

The show opens Friday, November 27, from 10 am to 3 pm, then runs Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm through January 24, 2027. The museum adds special holiday hours on December 24 and December 31 from 10 am to 1 pm. It is listed for all ages, and it makes an easy indoor stop during the school break. The museum sits along Whitney Avenue at the Hamden and New Haven line.

Parent tip: Visit on a weekend, or during the extra Dec 24 and Dec 31 morning hours. Kids can take a turn running a train.

Hamden Public Library's Brundage Community Branch hosts a family night focused on dressing up holiday gifts. Families learn to make and assemble bows from old graphic novels and book pages, then design their own gift tags to finish off presents for the season. It is a hands on project that children and grown ups can do side by side.

The library describes it as a family event where all ages are welcome. It runs from 5:30 to 7 pm on Wednesday, December 2, in the Brundage Meeting Room, and registration is recommended because space is limited to about 20 people. The Brundage branch is at 91 Circular Avenue. Families who want a calm, crafty evening before the December rush will find this a low key way to get ready for the season together.

Parent tip: Register ahead, since the room holds about 20. Bring a gift or two to wrap if you want to finish them on the spot.

A story for the drive home

A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.
