Christkindlmarkt SLC is a free German-style Christmas market at This Is The Place Heritage Park, open 11 am to 8 pm from Wednesday, December 2 through Saturday, December 5. For kids, the highlight is the Gnomie Storytelling Show in the Pioneer Center, with shows at 2, 3 and 4 pm each day, where children sing, dance and laugh as the gnomies tell a gnomie Christmas story and act out silly tales.

St. Nikolaus visits the Pioneer Center each day for photo ops, and the Lantern Parade steps off at 6 pm on Thursday, December 3. The market also has a petting zoo, pony rides for a small fee, a live nativity, stage performances and vendors. Entry tickets are not required. Crowds are large, so organizers ask families to leave strollers at home if possible.

Parent tip: Onsite parking must be prepaid and reserved in advance; free offsite lots have a shuttle every 15 minutes, and TRAX Red Line riders can catch it at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Leave strollers at home if you can.

Candlelight Christmas turns the Heritage Village at This Is The Place Heritage Park into a glowing 1800s Christmas scene, Monday through Saturday from December 11 to 23, 5 to 9 pm. Families stroll lantern-lit streets while the Heritage Carolers sing, visit Father Christmas to share wish lists, and pause at a live nativity reenactment.

Inside the historic pioneer homes, kids can try hands-on holiday crafts, warm up by the fire, watch demonstrations of traditional Christmas practices and hear storytelling. Brigham's Donuts, the ZCMI Candy and Toy Shop and the Gift Shop are open for treats and gifts. Much of the evening is outdoors, with indoor stops along the way. Walkways are a mix of paved and packed earth; most activities work for strollers and wheelchairs, though some cabins have steps or narrow doors.

Parent tip: Dress warmly since much of the event is outdoors. Free onsite parking is available, and arriving early makes parking easier; some cabins have steps, so strollers may not fit everywhere.

The South Jordan branch of the Salt Lake County Library hosts Light the Night on Friday, December 4. Kids can make a festive winter craft, then settle in by the fireplace to hear stories read by Mrs. Claus, a cozy way to kick off the first weekend of December.

The event runs from 6 to 8 pm and is listed for a general audience, so the whole family can come together, and no registration is required on the library calendar. Because it is a two hour window, families can drop in when it suits them rather than arriving at a set start time. Like other county library programs, it is free. The evening timing makes it an easy outing after work or school.

Parent tip: Drop in anytime during the two hour window, and come early if you want a spot close to the fireplace for the stories.

Salt Lake County Library's Daybreak branch in South Jordan hosts A Visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus on Monday, December 7, 2026, from 7 to 8 pm in the branch meeting room. The library lists it as a general audience program and describes it as fun for all ages.

The hour combines three things young children love at this time of year: a storytime led by Mrs. Claus, a chance to visit with Santa, and a wintry craft to make and take home. The program is also described in Spanish as Una Visita con Papa y Mama Noel, so it is a welcoming choice for bilingual families. Because it is an evening event, the timing works well for working parents who cannot make a daytime storytime, and older siblings can come along after school. The meeting room holds about 66 people, so arriving a little early is wise.

Parent tip: The room holds about 66 people, so plan to arrive a few minutes early.

The South Jordan Library is hosting a Nutcracker Tea Party on Saturday, December 12, from 2 to 3:30 pm. Families can drop in for Nutcracker themed crafts and activities and enjoy light refreshments together. Guests are invited to wear their best holiday themed or fanciest attire, which makes it a fun excuse for kids to dress up.

All ages are welcome. The library encourages registration so it can plan for crafts and refreshments, but it is not required. The program is free. It pairs nicely with a family trip to see the Nutcracker ballet this season, or simply works as a festive afternoon for children who love dressing up and making crafts. Come dressed up and plan for about an hour and a half of crafts and treats.

Parent tip: Register online if you can to help the library plan, and let kids wear their holiday best.

The South Jordan Library celebrates the season with A Very Merry Magic Show on Thursday, December 17, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Jason Fun leads a hilarious, high energy show filled with amazing magic, silly surprises and plenty of audience participation, all wrapped up with a little holiday cheer.

The library describes it as family friendly and lists it for a general audience, so it works for kids of many ages along with parents and grandparents. No registration is listed on the calendar, and the show is free. Seating at popular library performances can fill up, so arriving a bit early is a good idea, especially if your child hopes to be picked as a volunteer.

Parent tip: Arrive early for good seats, since audience participation is a big part of the show.

The Draper Library's Thursday Morning Puppet Show on December 10 tells the classic tale of The Shoemaker and the Elves. A poor shoemaker and his wife have run out of everything, including hope, until two magical elves stop by in the night to lend a hand. Young audiences get to find out what the old couple discovers in the morning.

The show runs twice, at 10:30 and 11:15 am, and each performance lasts about 30 minutes, which suits short attention spans. It is listed for preschoolers ages 0 to 5. No registration is shown on the library calendar, and the program is free. Having two show times makes it easier to fit around naps or a second child's schedule.

Parent tip: Pick the later 11:15 show if the first one looks crowded.

The Draper Library's Family Activity Night on Monday, December 14, is all about holiday crafts. Families are invited to spend an hour together making crafts to celebrate the season, a relaxed way to slow down during a busy month.

The program runs from 7 to 8 pm, is open to all ages, and the library notes that no registration is required. It is free, like other Salt Lake County Library programs. The evening start time works for working parents and school-age kids, and siblings can craft side by side. Finished pieces can become handmade decorations for home or small gifts for grandparents, teachers or friends. The Draper branch is also hosting a Shoemaker and the Elves puppet show the same week, so families can make two festive library trips.

Parent tip: Come a little early on a weeknight to get settled before the crafting begins.

The Sandy Library is hosting gingerbread house decorating on Thursday, December 17, with two sessions, one after school from 3:30 to 4:30 pm and one in the evening from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Everyone who decorates gets to create a cute graham cracker gingerbread house to take home.

Tickets are required for each person decorating a house, and they are handed out in person at the library starting Saturday, December 12, at 10 am. The program is listed for a general audience and is free. Because supplies are limited, families who want a spot should plan to stop by the branch soon after tickets become available. The two time options make it easier to work around school and dinner.

Parent tip: Pick up tickets in person at the Sandy Library starting Sat, Dec 12 at 10 am, one for each child who will decorate.

The Sandy branch of the Salt Lake County Library hosts A Visit with Santa on Monday, December 21, 2026, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm in its large meeting room. The library invites families to enjoy a fun-filled special visit with Santa and notes that there is no place like the County Library for the holidays.

The program is listed as a drop-in activity for school-age children and a general audience, so there is no need to sign up in advance. Coming just a few days before Christmas, it is a good last chance for children to share their wish lists with Santa in a calm, indoor setting rather than a crowded mall line. The afternoon timing lands during winter break for many families, and the meeting room holds about 80 people, so a visit early in the hour may mean a shorter wait.

Parent tip: Drop in any time during the hour; coming early may mean a shorter wait to see Santa.

Mrs. Claus comes to the Herriman Library on Tuesday morning, December 8, for a special story time. Using her wit and charm, she answers the big questions young children have about Santa, such as why Santa depends on Jack Frost, where Santa got his elves, and what the elves did when Santa was feeling a bit blue.

The program is aimed at preschoolers ages 0 to 5 and their grown ups, and it runs for about an hour. No registration is listed on the library calendar, and county library programs are free. Little ones who are curious about the North Pole will enjoy hearing the answers straight from Mrs. Claus, and it is a calm weekday morning option before the busiest part of the season.

The Holladay Library throws a Nutcracker Suite Holiday Celebration on Thursday, December 17, from 4 to 5:30 pm. Kids can make crafts, go "skating" to the music of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, and take home party favors, with treats and more on the schedule.

The party is geared to preschoolers and school-age children up to about age 9. No registration is listed on the library calendar, and the program is free. The afternoon timing works for families picking kids up from school, and the music and movement make it a good fit for children with energy to burn. It is a nice introduction to the Nutcracker for little ones who are not ready for a full ballet.

Parent tip: Dress kids in socks or comfortable clothes that are easy to glide and move in for the skating fun.

The event is listed for a general audience, so siblings of all ages are welcome, and no registration is shown on the library calendar. Mrs. Claus stops by the Millcreek branch of the Salt Lake County Library on Tuesday, December 15, 2026, for a half hour of holiday storytelling from 10:30 to 11 am in the meeting room. The library lists it as a drop-in activity aimed at preschoolers and a general audience.

Using her wit and charm, Mrs. Claus answers the kinds of questions curious children ask about Santa, such as why Santa depends on Jack Frost, where Santa found his elves, and what the elves did when Santa was feeling a bit blue. The short format suits toddlers and preschoolers who are not ready to sit through a long program, and the morning time works well for families with little ones at home during the week. The meeting room holds about 80 people, and because it is drop-in, there is nothing to sign up for ahead of time.

Parent tip: This is a drop-in program; arrive a few minutes early to settle little ones before the 10:30 am start.

Are there Christmas train rides for kids in Salt Lake City?

Yes, but they have their own guide. Santa trains and holiday train rides are listed in our Salt Lake City Christmas train rides guide, so this page sticks to story times, Santa visits and other events off the rails.

How do you confirm these events?

We list an event only after we find this season’s date on the host’s own website or an official city or tourism calendar. We last checked every listing on November 2, 2026. Hosts change details, so always confirm on the host’s page before you go.

Event names belong to their hosts. Rally Takes the Train is a family picture book and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any host listed here. Confirm dates, times and prices on each host’s own site before you go.
