The Chattanooga Zoo's Asian Lantern Festival returns with an all new Wildlife Wonderland theme, featuring hundreds of hand-crafted silk lanterns up to 16 feet tall in nearly 50 scenes, including leopards, elephants, koalas, pandas and a few dinosaurs. Some lanterns move and shimmer, and interactive displays such as swings and seesaws let kids play along the path.
The festival runs Wednesday through Sunday evenings from 5:30 to 9:30 pm, with extra nights during Thanksgiving week, Christmas week (closed Christmas Day) and New Year's week. On December 11, 12, 18 and 19, families can get a picture with Santa Claus in the Education Building at no extra charge. Most resident animals are not visible at night and some indoor habitats are closed.
Parent tip: Santa photos are in the Education Building on the four listed dates. Family four-packs and group rates for 15 or more are offered.

For the holiday season, the Ruby Falls nature park on Lookout Mountain becomes a winter wonderland. Families can see festive decorations and special activities inside the historic Ruby Falls Castle, walk among twinkling lights around the outdoor plaza and add a handwritten holiday wish to the Forest of Wishes, where the trees fill with paper wishes.
The season can be paired with a guide-led walk to see the tallest underground waterfall open to the public in the United States. Afterward, the cafe inside the 1929 limestone castle serves casual meals, seasonal treats and hot cocoa beside the fireplace. Cave adventure tickets are not needed to visit the cafe. The holiday season runs from November 27 through December 24, 2026, giving families most of the month to plan a visit. It works well as an outing for mixed ages, since younger kids can enjoy the lights and the wish trees while older children may want the full cave walk.
Parent tip: The cave stays a steady temperature year round; buy cave tour tickets ahead if you plan to see the waterfall.

Lower Elementary Flavor Lab is a monthly hands-on cooking program at the Downtown Library created for kids in kindergarten through second grade. Cooking on the library's Charlie Cart mobile kitchen, children learn simple, safe kitchen skills and make healthy snacks they can recreate at home.
The December session on Saturday, December 5, from 11 am to noon, features Holiday Granola, a fitting seasonal recipe for young cooks. Space is strictly limited to 15 participants per session and is first come, first served, so arriving early is the best way to get a spot. The listing does not mention a fee. The program is designed so that real cooking skills feel safe and simple for early elementary children, and the recipes are chosen to build confidence. It is a nice option for kids who like helping in the kitchen at home.
Parent tip: Only 15 kids can take part, so the library suggests arriving early to secure a spot.

Family Day Out is the Northgate Library's monthly Saturday program for families, offering activities for all ages such as family movie days, crafting and games. Each month has its own theme, and the December session on Saturday, December 12, is a Holiday Storytime.
The program runs from 10 am to noon at the Northgate Library in the Northgate Mall area of Hixson. It is a relaxed way to spend part of a Saturday together, listening to seasonal stories and making memories as a family. The library lists the program as free, and no registration is mentioned. Holiday Storytime is part of a monthly series that rotates between movies, crafts and games, so the December date is the one to circle for seasonal stories. The branch sits beside Northgate Mall, which makes it easy to pair with other weekend errands in the Hixson area.
Parent tip: The branch is at Northgate Mall Drive; plan for a two hour window and drop in.

The Holly Jolly Jamboree opens Soddy-Daisy's Christmas weekend on Friday, December 4, from 4 to 9 pm at Veterans Park on Dayton Pike. Families can stroll among decorated Christmas trees, listen to festive music, shop a Christmas market of local vendors and grab a seasonal treat such as hot cocoa or warm apple cider.
The highlight for kids is a photo with Santa Claus. The trees on display come from a community decorating competition with entries from businesses, schools, families and groups, and they stay up throughout December for everyone to enjoy. The Soddy-Daisy Christmas Parade follows on Sunday, December 6, for families who want to make a weekend of it. The jamboree is the first event of a full Christmas weekend in Soddy-Daisy organized by the city, which also includes a Sunday afternoon parade. It is a good choice for families with young children because it starts in the late afternoon and runs into the evening.
Parent tip: The decorated trees remain at Veterans Park through December if you cannot make the Friday event.

The Soddy-Daisy Christmas Parade is one of the city's favorite holiday traditions. On Sunday, December 6, at 2 pm, the parade travels along Dayton Pike from Harrison Lane to Sequoyah Road, with floats, marching bands, dancers and decorated vehicles from local businesses, churches, schools and community groups.
The parade ends with a special appearance by Santa Claus. An afternoon start time makes it an easy outing for younger children. Watching the parade is open to the public, and groups that want to march must register by November 25 through the city's online application. The parade is part of the city's 2026 Christmas Celebrations weekend, which begins with the Holly Jolly Jamboree at Veterans Park on Friday evening. Entries are organized with the Soddy-Daisy Firefighters Association, and the route along Dayton Pike gives plenty of curbside space for families.
Parent tip: Find a spot along Dayton Pike between Harrison Lane and Sequoyah Road before 2 pm.

Rock City's Enchanted Garden of Lights is in its 32nd year and turns the mountaintop gardens into a nighttime winter wonderland covered in millions of lights. The trail passes Toyland, the original peace doves and nativity scene, Fairyland Caverns and Mother Goose Village, then heads down Christmas Tree Lane to Carter Cliffs, a 1930s holiday home where Santa and his workshop wait.
Santa visits nightly through December 23. After that, guests can still walk the Carter Cliffs trail, Christmas tree walk and Santa's workshop, and the home stays open for hot chocolate. Tickets are sold online only, with timed entry, and prices vary by date and entry time. Guests cannot enter before their ticket time, including for food and Santa. Part of the event's proceeds support the Ronald McDonald House.
Parent tip: The trail is not fully stroller accessible, so the park recommends a backpack or front carrier; stroller parking and a limited access trail are available. Tickets are online only.
