Southern Lights, now in its 33rd year at the Kentucky Horse Park, is a drive-through holiday light show with over a million twinkling lights that families can see from the comfort of the car. It runs nightly from Friday, November 27, through Thursday, December 31, from 5:30 to 10 pm, and is closed on Christmas Day.

The Holiday Village is back as well, with photos with Santa, Animal Land, model trains and more for guests of all ages. Admission is $35 per carload, whether bought online or at the ticket booth. Buying ahead helps skip the wait at the gate. The park is just north of Lexington off Iron Works Pike near Interstate 75. Because the lights are seen from the car, it is an easy outing with sleepy little ones, and the Holiday Village gives older kids a chance to stretch their legs and meet Santa.

Parent tip: Pre-purchase tickets online to avoid the line at the booth; the price is the same either way.

The Beaumont Branch of the Lexington Public Library is hosting a holiday Crafternoon on two dates, Wednesday, December 2, and Saturday, December 5, each from 3 to 4 pm. Families will make and decorate gift tags and ornaments shaped like gingerbread houses, built from cardboard tubes.

The finished pieces can go on presents or the tree, so kids can bring home something they made for the season. Supplies are provided while they last, and the listing does not require registration, so arriving near the start time is a good idea. The Beaumont Branch is on Fieldstone Way in southwest Lexington. Offering the same craft on a weekday afternoon and a Saturday gives families two chances to fit it in, and the project is simple enough for younger children with a little help from a grown-up.

Parent tip: Supplies are limited, so come early in the hour.

After the parade, the celebration moves to Triangle Park, where the lighting program begins at about 6 pm. Lexington's official Christmas tree and Hanukkah menorah light up the heart of downtown, along with community performances. The full schedule of events will be posted later on the Luminate Lexington page. Downtown Lexington Partnership presents the evening as part of Luminate Lexington, and organizations interested in marching can apply through the 2026 parade application on the same page. The early evening timing works well for families with young children.

Parent tip: Arrive early to claim a curbside spot for the 5 pm parade, then walk to Triangle Park for the lighting.

The Scott County Public Library in Georgetown is hosting a special Santa-themed Preschool Storytime on Thursday, December 3, from 11 to 11:45 am in Meeting Room C. After the stories, children ages 3 to 6 can take photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Kids are encouraged to wear their Christmas best, a crazy Christmas sweater or reindeer antlers. Caregivers are asked to take part and put phones away, and to skip food and drinks during storytime. Children with sound sensitivities can bring their own noise-canceling headphones, and the library notes that children with disabilities are always welcome. The program is free. The library is on South Bradford Lane in Georgetown, a short drive north of Lexington. This storytime is part of a weekly preschool series, and the Santa visit makes the December 3 session a special one worth planning around.

Parent tip: Bring your own camera for the photo op; no food or drinks during storytime.

The Scott County Public Library is hosting Photos with Santa Claus on Sunday, December 6, from 2 to 3:30 pm in Meeting Room F. Children can meet Santa, tell him what they want for Christmas and have their picture taken. The photo op is free, and families are encouraged to dress in their Christmas-card best.

The event is limited to 60 people, and registration is required for the children taking photos, not the adults. The library does not provide a photographer, so families should bring their own camera and someone to take the picture. Pets are not allowed, only service dogs. Because it runs as a drop-in, there may be a short wait. The library is on South Bradford Lane in Georgetown, a short drive north of Lexington. It is a low-key alternative to busy mall lines for families who want a Santa picture.

Parent tip: Register each child, bring your own camera and photographer, and leave pets at home.

To mark Ugly Christmas Sweater Day on December 19, the Scott County Public Library in Georgetown is celebrating all weekend with ugly sweater paper crafts. From Friday, December 18, through Sunday, December 20, families can stop by the Story Barn and design their best ugly sweater.

The craft runs as an ongoing drop-in activity, so there is no set start time, and it is free. It suits a quick visit during a library trip, and children of different ages can work side by side. Wearing your own holiday sweater is a fun touch, though the listing does not require it. The library is on South Bradford Lane in Georgetown, a short drive north of Lexington. The Story Barn is the library's space for children, so the craft fits naturally into a weekend visit to pick out books before the holiday break.

Parent tip: Drop in any time during library hours that weekend.

A story for the drive home

A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.
