Taking the kids to Moffat Road Railroad Museum? Bring Rally along.
In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi's little legs can't manage the big train stairs, so Dad gives him a boost. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to Granby.

From a town hall holiday display to a railyard of its own
The museum began in 2009, when the Grand County Model Railroad Club started a working model of the Moffat Road, the Denver & Northwestern Pacific Railroad that ran from Denver to Craig from about 1905 into the 1960s. What started as a holiday train display at Granby's town hall has grown into a full museum just off Highway 40, with the goal of opening year round one day.
Along the way the museum gathered real railroad equipment, including a 1902 depot, a 1923 all-wood red Union Pacific caboose and a 1913 steam derrick, and gave itself a striking front door. Its Visitor Center is the former Wedding Chapel from Heritage Square in Golden, built in 1956 by the Magic Mountain construction team and once a one-room schoolhouse from Lakewood. When Heritage Square was demolished in 2016, the chapel was spared, and local historical groups helped move it to Granby. The museum restored it, added a copper bell tower and opened it in May 2020.
The newest chapter is the Family Train Ride, years in the making and a dream of Executive Director Dave Naples. Staff, volunteers and a hired crew laid 2,300 feet of track around the grounds, board members inspected the custom-built train's Kubota diesel engine, and staff member Bob Pease hand-lettered the coaches. Benefactors Fred and Linda Milanovich helped, and the ride welcomed its first passengers in August 2026.
Christmas trains, a Sky Rail and a railyard to ride around
Inside, the 1,100 square foot O scale layout runs several trains at once through tunnels, over bridges and water, along a roadway and around a huge ski mountain with two working chairlifts, with interactive features for kids. Overhead, a G scale train called the Moffat Sky Rail circles the room near the ceiling. In the Exhibit Hall, volunteers are building an HO scale replica of the Moffat line from the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel all the way to Craig, and visitors can watch its progress.
The Interpretive Center holds nine pieces of railroad equipment from the early 1900s in various stages of restoration. Local visitor guides mention a 1905 passenger car, the 1923 caboose, a 1913 steam derrick, a steam locomotive with a working whistle and a 1915 hand-cart shed from Hot Sulphur Springs. The Visitor Center has railroad artifacts, an interactive train display and a gift shop with Lionel and BRIO trains and local handcrafted items.

Model trains to watch and a train to ride
Kids get a lot here for a small price: chairlifts and running trains on the model layout, interactive buttons, a train circling near the ceiling, and then a real ride outside. The Family Train Ride was designed for both children and adults, so grandparents can ride along, and each $4 ticket covers two loops of the yard.
The museum has made the ride accessible, with one fully accessible car and ramps at the loading platform. Holiday visitors can time a trip for Santa's visits in December, and the Halloween Haunted Train is a free community event on October 31.

Bring Rally along: a train book for the drive

The model layout being built here will start at the Moffat Tunnel, and that made me smile, because a tunnel is one of my favorite pages in our book. The train goes dark, Rally holds still, and then there's a big bright light and happy cheers. My mom pictured that moment long before there was a book, and I like knowing kids in Granby will watch little trains disappear into the dark and pop out again. You can read about her on our story page.
