The world's highest cog railway climbs 9 miles from Manitou Springs to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak, and it is only one of the mountain railroads still carrying Colorado families. This page is part of our national train museum finder, and it covers 15 Colorado train museums, heritage railroads and rail parks in 15 towns, from Greeley to Durango. Type your town into the finder below to see what is closest.

Many of these stops are rides rather than rooms of artifacts. Narrow gauge steam still runs out of Durango, Antonito, Georgetown and Cripple Creek, and the Royal Gorge Route and Leadville trains follow old mining and main line routes. Closer to Denver, the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden keeps more than 100 railcars on 15 acres, and Greeley has a huge HO model railroad that runs like the real thing.

Several mountain railroads are seasonal and sell out, and some sites open only on event days, so check each card for hours before you drive into the high country.

In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi's little legs can't manage the big train stairs, so Dad gives him a boost. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to a Colorado train museum.

Silver, gold and narrow gauge in the mountains

Colorado's railroads followed the mines. Narrow gauge track, easier to bend around tight canyon curves, carried trains into silver and gold camps across the Rockies. The Denver & Rio Grande founded Durango in 1880 and reached Silverton in 1882 to haul ore out of the San Juan Mountains. The Denver, South Park & Pacific reached Como in 1879 and Breckenridge in 1882, and in 1884 the Georgetown Loop spiraled over its own track to climb toward Silver Plume.

Some lines solved hard problems in odd ways. The Rio Grande Southern, born in Ridgway, built its Galloping Goose motorcars to cut costs, and the Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway used a toothed rail to push trains to the top of Pikes Peak starting in 1891. When ore and freight faded, tourism and preservation groups kept many of these routes alive.

For the big picture, start at the Colorado Railroad Museum. Ride the mining-era narrow gauge on the Durango & Silverton, the Cumbres & Toltec and the Georgetown Loop. The Ridgway Railroad Museum tells the Rio Grande Southern story, and the High Line Railroad Park shows what it took to run trains over the mountains in winter.

Holiday trains and seasonal days at Colorado museums

Colorado has two Polar Express trains on this list: the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden runs THE POLAR EXPRESS behind a coal-fired steam locomotive each November and December, and the Durango & Silverton runs it too. Georgetown Loop's Santa's Lighted Forest winds through more than 300,000 lights from November 6 to December 24, and the Royal Gorge Route, Cumbres & Toltec and Pueblo Railway Museum all run Santa trains. In October, look for the Harvest Haunt Express in Golden, the Trick or Treat Train in Georgetown, Pueblo's Cemetery Express and the free Halloween Haunted Train in Granby. Golden also hosts Day Out with Thomas. See our guides to Christmas train rides in Colorado and Halloween train rides in Colorado for more.

Good to know before a Colorado train trip

    • Altitude matters: Leadville sits at 10,200 feet, Cumbres Pass at 10,015 feet and Pikes Peak at 14,115 feet, so pack warm layers, sunscreen and water even in summer.
    • The Pikes Peak Cog Railway is not recommended for infants under six months or anyone with a history of heart or breathing problems.
    • Long rides like the Durango to Silverton round trip (about 9.25 hours) and the full Cumbres & Toltec line suit kids who can sit for hours; shorter options exist on both.
    • Georgetown Loop, Royal Gorge Route and Polar Express trains often sell out, so book ahead.
    • At the Colorado Railroad Museum, event tickets cost $5 more per person on site than online.
    • The Como Roundhouse opens only on posted volunteer and open house days, and Moffat Road Railroad Museum closes between seasons, so check before you drive.
    • High Line Railroad Park has no restrooms; use the nearby Stephen C. West Ice Arena.

Colorado trains go through a lot of tunnels and canyons, and that makes me think of my favorite page in our book. Rally, our real corgi, rides the Pacific Surfliner out of San Diego, and the train slips into a dark tunnel. Then comes a big bright light and everyone cheers. My kids are learning to read now, and they still cheer at that part. The story was my mom's idea before she died in 2021, and you can read about her on our story page.
