Taking the kids to Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation? Bring Rally along.

In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi's little legs can't manage the big train stairs, so Dad gives him a boost. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to Ravenna.

Bringing a big C&O steam engine back to life

The Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation, known as KSHC, is a Kentucky nonprofit based on the border of Irvine and Ravenna. Its mission is to educate, entertain and inspire past, present and future generations by operating historic rail equipment. The centerpiece is Chesapeake & Ohio K-4 2-8-4 steam locomotive 2716, which the group is restoring to operation as living history.

KSHC sees the work as more than preservation: it describes itself as a railroad-centered economic development project for Eastern Kentucky, with a rail yard taking shape in Estill County. The group holds the reporting mark KSHX, and in March 2026 it announced a multi-year lease of former Norfolk & Western SD40-2 6162 to the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad on the historic Peavine line. Volunteers have also raised money to bring caboose CSXT 900061 home from Social Circle, Georgia, in memory of a friend named Kevin.

How the public can see the work

There is no walk-in museum with regular hours. Instead, the public meets KSHC through special events, including engineer experiences where ticket holders can run and operate a real steam engine, and through progress shared on its website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and X. A planned Whistle Blow was moved from 2025 to spring 2026; check the events page for the latest.

  2. N&W SD40-2 6162A diesel relettered for Norfolk & Western in 2023, now leased to the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad.

Best for older rail fans

Because there is no regular museum, this is a place to visit on event days. Families with steam-loving kids should watch for public events such as the Whistle Blow; the engineer experience is a hands-on program, so check age rules on the events page before buying.

Bring Rally along: a train book for the drive

From Rally Takes the Train, watercolor by Leslie Dunn.

Waiting years for a steam engine to whistle again must feel a little like riding through a long, dark tunnel. In our book, Rally's train goes dark for a moment, and then comes a big bright light and happy cheers. I imagine the cheers in Estill County when 2716 finally breathes steam will sound much the same. My mom would have loved that kind of happy ending. Read how our book came to be on our story page.
