Halloween Train Rides in Kentucky (2026)

Only in Kentucky does a pumpkin train roll past thoroughbred horse farms on its way to a lookout over the Kentucky River, and that is exactly what the Bluegrass Railroad Museum's Pumpkin Patch Express does out of Woodford County Park in Versailles. Three family rides still have dates on or after October 14, and all three are pumpkin and costume rides rather than haunted ones: two daytime trains and one evening trick-or-treat train that is already sold out. For the other 49 states, start at our map of Halloween trains across the country.

The state's two railroad museums sit on opposite sides of the Bluegrass. Versailles is a short hop from Lexington and runs both a Saturday pumpkin ride and the one-night Boo!grass Limited. New Haven, about 20 minutes from Bardstown, is home to the Kentucky Railway Museum's Trick and Track Express, where kids ride the rails in costume and get sweet treats on board. Louisville sits roughly in the middle, about an hour from either one.

The short version

  • Lexington families are about 20 minutes from the Pumpkin Patch Express in Versailles, which leaves at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM on Saturdays Oct 17, 24 and 31, rain or shine, with a pumpkin patch stop where you buy your pumpkin.
  • Louisville families are a little closer to New Haven, about 50 minutes, where the Trick and Track Express leaves at 2:00 PM on Oct 24 and Oct 31 with costumes and treats on board.
  • The evening Boo!grass Limited (Oct 17, 6:30 PM, trick-or-treating and cider at Abbott Station) is sold out, so only plan on it if you land a spot from the waitlist.
  • From Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, Versailles is about 1 hour 30 minutes, though the Lebanon, Ohio pumpkin train is closer (see the bottom of this page).

With both Versailles pumpkin departures still open on all three Saturdays, the 2:30 PM train is the easy pick for a family that wants a slow morning first.

A dark tunnel, a brave corgi. Bring Rally along.

In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi rides into a dark tunnel, gets a little scared, and comes out to a big bright light and happy cheers. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to a Kentucky pumpkin train.

This is the Kentucky pumpkin train with the view. The museum's route runs 5.5 miles through horse farm country to an overlook at the Kentucky River, and the whole outing, pumpkin patch stop included, takes about two hours. Kids who like horses will have plenty to point at out the window before anyone even gets to the pumpkins.

One honest note: pumpkins at the patch are for sale, not handed out, at about $3 for a small one up to about $5 for a large one, and the museum takes cash or card. It runs rain or shine, so pack for whatever the Saturday sky is doing.

Versailles: Boo!grass Limited at the Bluegrass Railroad Museum

Next: Sat Oct 17Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeAbout 1.5 hoursDates left: Oct 17

The Bluegrass Railroad Museum's evening Halloween train is more trick-or-treat party than fright night. The Boo!grass Limited leaves Versailles at 6:30 PM on Saturday, Oct 17, rides out to Abbott Station at the Life Adventure Center for trick-or-treating, candy, apple cider, photo spots and cornhole, and gets back around 8:00 PM. The museum says it is designed for families and encourages costumes.

The catch: the single departure sold out before Oct 14, and the booking page now offers a waitlist only. If you join it, note the museum's rules: no refunds, reschedules need 24 hours notice, and riders should arrive 45 minutes early.

The Kentucky Railway Museum's Halloween ride is all about the costume. The museum invites kids to ride the rails dressed up, and sweet treats come around on board during the roughly hour and a half trip. It leaves at 2:00 PM, so it fits neatly after lunch and before an early bedtime.

New Haven is a small town about 20 minutes from Bardstown, which makes this an easy add-on to a fall weekend there. The museum describes it as a Halloween ride for the entire family. It runs only two Saturdays, and the second one is Halloween itself.

Rally’s Spooky Train Ride: Halloween shirts

The tunnel page from the book, Rally on his red seat in the dark, is printed on black shirts in sizes for the whole family, from baby to 5XL. Skip the costume hassle: no masks to fog up, no capes caught in the train door, just a shirt that already says Halloween and layers under a coat on a cold platform. A matching set makes for easy pumpkin train photos. See everything in the Rally shop.

Bluegrass Afternoons in the 60s, Evenings That Drop Into the 40s

Late October in Kentucky usually means afternoons in the 60s and evenings that slide into the 40s. That split lines up neatly with this year's rides: the Saturday Pumpkin Patch Express in Versailles and the 2:00 PM Trick and Track Express in New Haven both run in the warm part of the day, so a sweater or light jacket is usually plenty.

The Boo!grass Limited is the exception. It pulls out at 6:30 PM and gets back around 8:00 PM, well after dark, so anyone with a waitlist spot should bring real coats, hats for the kids and a blanket for laps. If you are driving in from eastern Kentucky, remember the hills there run colder at night than the Bluegrass, so the drive home may feel colder than the ride. The Versailles pumpkin train runs rain or shine, which makes rain boots and a spare pair of socks worth tossing in the car.

Pumpkins by Day, Candy at Dusk: Sorting Out Kentucky for a Jumpy Preschooler

All three of Kentucky's rides are easy calls for little kids. The Pumpkin Patch Express in Versailles is a daylight trip past horse farms to a river overlook and a pumpkin patch, and the Trick and Track Express in New Haven is a mid-afternoon costume and candy ride that the museum calls family friendly and not scary. Nothing in either museum's description mentions anything meant to frighten.

The Boo!grass Limited is the only one that runs into the dark, leaving at 6:30 PM and coming back around 8:00 PM, but the museum pitches it as a family trick-or-treat night with cider and cornhole, not a fright ride. It is sold out, so most families will be choosing a daytime train anyway. For a child who is wary of the dark, talk it through beforehand: "It will get dark outside the windows, the train lights stay on, and you sit right next to me the whole time."

Watercolor view from inside a dark tunnel looking out at a sunny beach and cliffs
From Rally Takes the Train, watercolor by Leslie Dunn.

There is a page in our book where the train goes into a tunnel and Rally cannot see a thing. He is scared, until his big ears catch happy cheers and a bright light shows up ahead. I think about that when I picture the Boo!grass Limited heading out at dusk toward a trick-or-treat stop: for a small child, the moment the windows go dark is the hard part, and the bright, candy-filled station at the end matters most. Print a few Rally coloring sheets for the drive to Versailles and read that page together first.

Rally's tunnel scene came from my mom, who imagined this whole story; here is how her idea became a book.

Kentucky Railroad Museum Details to Know Before You Load the Car

  • Bring a little cash or a card for the Versailles pumpkin patch: pumpkins are sold at the stop, about $3 small to $5 large, so the ticket alone does not get you one.
  • The Pumpkin Patch Express runs rain or shine at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM, and the museum sends any cancellation by email and text, so watch your phone rather than the sky.
  • The Boo!grass Limited (Oct 17 at 6:30 PM) sold out before Oct 14. The museum's booking page offers a waitlist; if you get a spot, arrive 45 minutes early, and know there are no refunds, only reschedules with 24 hours notice.
  • The Trick and Track Express leaves New Haven at 2:00 PM Eastern; the museum asks you to arrive by 1:15 PM, with boarding at 1:45 PM, which works for kids who nap in the morning but not for an early afternoon napper.
  • Neither museum has posted a stroller policy. Plan on carrying little ones onto vintage cars. The Bluegrass Railroad Museum points Boo!grass riders to free parking in the Woodford County Park lot; for New Haven, check the operator site.
  • The Kentucky Railway Museum also runs an adults-only (21 and over) Halloween evening, so make sure you pick the Trick and Track Express when you book with kids.
  • The Big South Fork Scenic Railway in Stearns has run a Blue Heron Ghost Mine trip in past Octobers, but no 2026 date has been published, so check the operator site if you live in south central Kentucky.

Pumpkin Trains Just Across the Ohio River and the Tennessee Line

Northern Kentucky families have a gentle pumpkin ride that is closer than anything in the Bluegrass: the LM&M Railroad's Pumpkin Express in Lebanon, Ohio is about 45 minutes away and still has five dates left. Our roundup of Ohio Halloween trains has the details.

Heading south, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga runs a family wizard-themed ride for younger kids and a ghost story night it recommends for ages 13 and up; see our Tennessee Halloween train page. West of Louisville, check our Indiana Halloween ride guide for options across the river.

What Kentucky Parents Ask About Halloween Trains, From Versailles to New Haven

What Halloween events are there for kids in Versailles, Kentucky?

One family Halloween option in Versailles is the Bluegrass Railroad Museum's Pumpkin Patch Express, a gentle pumpkin ride at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM on Saturdays Oct 17, 24 and 31. It runs 5.5 miles through horse country to a Kentucky River overlook, then stops at a pumpkin patch, about two hours in all. The same museum's evening Boo!grass Limited on Oct 17, with trick-or-treating and cider, is sold out with a waitlist.

Are there any Halloween things to do with kids in New Haven, Kentucky this month?

Yes. New Haven's Halloween train is the Trick and Track Express at the Kentucky Railway Museum, a gentle costume ride leaving at 2:00 PM on Saturdays Oct 24 and Oct 31. Kids are encouraged to ride in costume, and sweet treats are handed around on board during the roughly 90-minute trip. Tickets start at $17, and the museum describes it as a Halloween ride for the entire family.

Is there a pumpkin patch train in Versailles, KY?

Yes, the Bluegrass Railroad Museum's Pumpkin Patch Express stops at a pumpkin patch after a ride out to an overlook on the Kentucky River. It runs Saturdays Oct 17, 24 and 31, rain or shine, and the full outing takes about two hours. Pumpkins at the patch are sold separately, about $3 for small and $5 for large, and the museum accepts cash or card.

Do kids get a free pumpkin on the Bluegrass Railroad Museum train?

Not according to the museum's posted details, which list pumpkins for sale at the patch stop. Expect to pay about $3 for a small pumpkin and about $5 for a large one, and the museum takes cash or card. Train tickets start at about $20 for adults and $18 for children, so budget a few extra dollars per child if everyone wants to carry one home.

What are Halloween events for kids near Louisville, Kentucky?

Two Halloween trains are about an hour from Louisville. The Trick and Track Express in New Haven, about 50 minutes away, is a gentle 2:00 PM costume and candy ride on Oct 24 and Oct 31, from $17. The Bluegrass Railroad Museum in Versailles, about an hour away, runs the Pumpkin Patch Express at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM on Saturdays Oct 17, 24 and 31; its Boo!grass Limited evening is sold out.

Halloween things to do with kids near Lexington, KY?

The closest Halloween train to Lexington is in Versailles, about 20 minutes away. The Bluegrass Railroad Museum's Pumpkin Patch Express is a gentle ride through horse farm country to a pumpkin patch, leaving at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM on Saturdays Oct 17, 24 and 31. The museum's Boo!grass Limited on Oct 17 is sold out. New Haven's Trick and Track Express is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Lexington, on Oct 24 and 31.

Is there a Halloween train for kids near Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky?

Yes, a few are within about 90 minutes. On the Kentucky side, the Versailles pumpkin train at the Bluegrass Railroad Museum is about 1 hour 30 minutes from Cincinnati and runs Saturdays Oct 17, 24 and 31. Closer to Northern Kentucky, the LM&M Railroad's Pumpkin Express in Lebanon, Ohio is about 45 minutes away, a gentle pumpkin ride with remaining dates Oct 17, 18, 24, 25 and 31.

Halloween activities for families near Bardstown, Kentucky?

The Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven, about 20 minutes from Bardstown, runs the Trick and Track Express, a gentle family Halloween train. It leaves at 2:00 PM on Saturdays Oct 24 and Oct 31 and lasts about an hour and a half; the museum asks riders to arrive by 1:15 PM. Kids are encouraged to wear costumes and get sweet treats on board. Tickets start at $17, and as of October 14 both dates were on sale.

Can kids wear costumes on the Kentucky Railway Museum's Trick and Track Express?

Yes, costumes are encouraged; the museum's own description invites kids to ride the rails in costume. Sweet treats come around on board, so a costume with a bag or bucket works well. The museum has not posted rules about masks or props, so check the operator site if your child's costume includes something large. The ride leaves New Haven at 2:00 PM on Oct 24 and Oct 31.

Is the Boo!grass Limited in Versailles too scary for a toddler?

Probably not, based on how the Bluegrass Railroad Museum describes it: a family evening with a ride to Abbott Station for trick-or-treating, candy, apple cider and cornhole, back around 8:00 PM. The museum has not posted age guidance. The bigger issue is that the Oct 17 departure is sold out, with a waitlist only, so the daytime Pumpkin Patch Express is the realistic pick for a toddler.

Can we still get Kentucky Halloween train tickets for this weekend?

As of October 14, yes for Saturday, Oct 17, which is the only weekend day with Kentucky rides. The Versailles Pumpkin Patch Express had both its 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM departures open. The Boo!grass Limited that evening is sold out, and the museum's booking page offers a waitlist only. Nothing runs in New Haven until Oct 24, so book through each museum's own ticket page.

Does the Versailles pumpkin train still run if it rains?

Yes, the Bluegrass Railroad Museum says the Pumpkin Patch Express runs rain or shine. Plan on a damp pumpkin patch stop if the weather turns, and bring rain boots, a hooded jacket and a spare pair of socks for small kids. Late October afternoons in the Bluegrass usually sit in the 60s, so layers matter more than heavy coats for this daytime ride.
