University Place holds its Christmas tree lighting at Market Square on Friday, December 4, 2026. The community tree lights up at 6 pm. The evening includes student musical performances, food trucks and holiday activities.
Santa arrives aboard a West Pierce Fire & Rescue engine, and reindeer greet visitors outdoors. Santa photos and children's activities take place in the Civic Building Atrium from 5 to 7 pm, which gives families a warm indoor option. The tourism listing does not state a price, and it does not mention registration. The event is held at 3609 Market Place West. The program starts around 5 pm, so plan to arrive early if you want photos with Santa before the tree lighting. Check the City of University Place page for the final program and parking tips.
Parent tip: Santa photos run 5 to 7 pm indoors. Arrive early for the best spot at the tree.

A story for the drive home
A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.

A bedtime story after seeing SantaRally Takes the Train is a five-minute rhyming picture book about a corgi’s first train ride, hand-painted in real watercolor by Leslie Dunn. $16.99 on Amazon, ages 0 to 8.
