Garden Lights, Holiday Nights returns to the Atlanta Botanical Garden for its 16th season, shining nightly from November 14, 2026 through January 10, 2027. This year the garden is adding expanded displays along Flower Walk, bringing back the Imaginary Worlds mosaiculture dragon in the Skyline Garden, and debuting new choreography for Nature's Wonders, which the garden calls the world's largest curtain of light and sound.

Tickets are sold online only, are valid for the date chosen, and general admission must be bought before the day of your visit. Children 2 and younger do not need a ticket. The show now runs until midnight with last entry at 11 pm, and a Flex Tix add on lets families change dates if weather or a sick child gets in the way.

Parent tip: Buy tickets in advance from the garden's own site, since general admission is not sold the day of your visit. Consider the Flex Tix add on for weather.

The Cascade Branch of the Fulton County Library System hosts a weekly CRAFTernoon, and the first December session is all about winter. Kids paint and design paper plate winter hats, and the craft is followed by a winter themed story read aloud by library staff.

All supplies are provided, and the library simply asks children to bring a good attitude and a creative mind. The program is meant for ages 4 to 13, so it suits a wide range of siblings, and it takes place right after school on a Tuesday. Registration is required to take part in the weekly crafts, so sign up through the library event page ahead of time. Expect a relaxed, hands on hour that ends with a cozy read aloud.

Parent tip: Registration is required for the weekly crafts, so reserve a spot for each child on the library event page.

The Northside Branch Library's Family Movies series is showing The Muppet Christmas Carol on a Wednesday morning in early December. The film tells the Charles Dickens story of Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Michael Caine, who is visited on Christmas Eve by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come, all with the Muppets alongside him.

The library lists the screening as open to all ages with no registration required, which makes it an easy drop in plan for families with preschoolers or homeschooled kids who are free on a weekday. The program runs from 10:30 am to noon. It is a gentle way to introduce young children to a classic holiday story before they meet it on stage or in a book.

Parent tip: No registration is required. The screening is on a weekday morning, so it works best for younger kids and homeschool families.

All through December the Children's Museum of Atlanta runs a storytime and puppet show on its CMA On-Stage area as part of its Snow Days program. Staff read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, and after the story children help write and direct a winter themed puppet show of their own.

The activity is included in regular museum admission, so it fits into a normal visit rather than requiring a separate ticket. Snow Days also includes an instant snow science demonstration and winter landscape art in the studio during the same December 3 to 30 window. The museum is in downtown Atlanta next to Centennial Olympic Park, which makes it easy to pair with other holiday sightseeing downtown. Families can join the story whenever it is offered during their visit.

Parent tip: Included with admission. Check the museum's daily schedule on arrival for the on stage storytime times.

The center lists the 2026 festival for Saturday, December 5, with holiday activities for all ages. Hours, pricing and the full schedule had not been posted at the time we checked, and the center says registration details are to come.

For a sense of what to expect, the 2025 festival ran from 9 am to 4 pm and was included with museum admission. It featured Tinsel Tales story times, a Jingle Parade led by Santa, photos with Santa at the historic Texas locomotive, a holiday craft corner, letters to Santa, historic holiday demonstrations and family games. Check the event page before you go to confirm this year's lineup and ticket details.

Parent tip: Registration details for 2026 are still to come, so check the event page closer to the date. Last year Santa photo slots were limited and booked along with admission tickets.

The Sandy Springs Branch of the Fulton County Library System is hosting a special visitor story time with Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and Evie the Elf. The library invites families to dress in their festive best, listen to a holiday story together, and then greet Santa once the reading wraps up.

The program runs for about half an hour on a Wednesday morning, which suits babies, toddlers, preschoolers and younger school age kids who are free on a weekday. The library calendar lists the audience as birth to five and kids, and no online registration is shown for this event. Because it is a short, popular program with a famous guest, plan to arrive a little early so little ones can settle in before the story begins.

Parent tip: Dress kids in festive clothes as the library suggests, and arrive early since the visit follows a short 30 minute story time.

The Sandy Springs Branch Library is presenting a Night before Christmas puppet show on a Saturday afternoon in mid December. The library describes it as the real story of that famous holiday night, told by a mouse who witnessed everything, and performed with lively hand puppets.

The show is billed as a merry tale with silly twists and turns for the whole family, so it works well for preschoolers and early elementary kids who already know the classic poem and will enjoy hearing it from a new point of view. It runs about 45 minutes, and no registration is listed on the library calendar. This is a nice low key Saturday outing that pairs well with browsing the children's holiday books afterward.

Parent tip: No registration is listed, so arriving a few minutes early is the best way to get good seats for small children.

Miss Williams leads a monthly Saturday story time at the Louise Watley Library at Southeast Atlanta, with a different theme each month. The December session is titled The Gift of Kindness and focuses on kindness, generosity and caring for others during the holiday season.

Earlier sessions in the series covered confidence, handling change and gratitude, so this is a gentle, values centered story time rather than a Santa event. It is a good fit for families who want a calm holiday outing built around books and conversation. The program lasts about an hour on a Saturday afternoon, and the library lists it for kids with no registration shown. It is part of the free Fulton County Library System calendar, and the branch is on Pryor Road in southeast Atlanta with on site parking.

Parent tip: This is a regular monthly series, so families who enjoy it can return in the new year for the next theme.

The City of South Fulton has posted a District 5 Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 19, from 9 to 11 am at Burdett Park on Burdett Road. It is a neighborhood style event organized through the city calendar, timed for the last weekend before Christmas week.

The city listing is brief and does not yet give a price, menu, age range or registration details, so families should contact the city's Community Relations and Services Division at 470-552-4311 before heading out. Neighborhood breakfasts like this tend to be relaxed and community focused, which can be a nice alternative to long mall lines for a Santa visit with young children. Burdett Park is a city park, so check the listing again closer to the date for any added details about the setup.

Are there Christmas train rides for kids in Georgia?

Yes, but they have their own guide. Santa trains and holiday train rides are listed in our Georgia Christmas train rides guide, so this page sticks to story times, Santa visits and other events off the rails.

How do you confirm these events?

We list an event only after we find this season’s date on the host’s own website or an official city or tourism calendar. We last checked every listing on November 2, 2026. Hosts change details, so always confirm on the host’s page before you go.

Event names belong to their hosts. Rally Takes the Train is a family picture book and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any host listed here. Confirm dates, times and prices on each host’s own site before you go.
