Project Ballet introduces young children to the story of the Nutcracker in the Theater at the Allen County Public Library's Main Library. Dancers share snippets of the story and provide simple instruction so that everyone in the room can learn a little ballet too.
The program is designed for babies, toddlers and preschoolers, and it is offered on two Fridays, Nov 6 and Nov 20, 2026, from 11 am to noon. Space is limited, so the library asks families to register and says registration brings event reminders. The Theater has hearing devices and wheelchair spaces, and families who need other accommodations can contact the library at ask@acpl.info. The Main Library is at 900 Library Plaza in downtown Fort Wayne. The program is free, which makes it an easy way to start the holiday season with a story and some movement.
Parent tip: Register ahead because space is limited. Wear clothes that are easy to move in.

Fort Wayne Civic Theatre stages the musical adaptation of the beloved television special about a reindeer whose shiny nose makes him feel like he does not belong. Along the way Rudolph meets fellow misfits and learns that what makes him different is what helps him save Christmas.
The show features Santa and Mrs. Claus, Hermey the Elf, Bumble the Abominable Snow Monster, Clarice and Yukon Cornelius, with songs such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and A Holly Jolly Christmas. It was imagined with universal design principles, so performers of all abilities appear on stage and the storytelling is meant to be accessible for audiences too. The production is rated G. It plays Nov 7 through Nov 22, 2026 at the Arts United Center, 303 East Main Street, with tickets listed at $25 to $40. Showtimes are on the theatre's ticket page.

Wild Lights turns the zoo into an evening light display with over one million lights, and this year more than 300,000 new ones have been added. Families can walk the grounds after dark, take part in a dance party and the nightly tree lighting hosted by Santa's elves, toast s'mores and decorate sugar cookies with festive characters. A small zoo railroad is also part of the evening.
The zoo is open on select nights from Nov 13, 2026 through Jan 3, 2027, from 5:30 to 9 pm, and is closed Nov 26, Dec 24 and Dec 25. Admission is $12 for general guests and $10 for members, with children 1 and under free. Parking is free at the main entrance and at the Zoo Education Center. A combined Fort Wayne Light Fest ticket covers Wild Lights, Fantasy of Lights and the Parkview Field lights at a discount.

Fantasy of Lights is described as northeast Indiana's favorite holiday tradition. It is a three-mile drive-through light show at Franke Park in Fort Wayne, with expanded displays and new experiences this year.
Because guests stay in their vehicle, it is an easy option for families with babies, toddlers or children who tire quickly, and it works in cold or snowy weather. The 2026 run begins Nov 16 and continues through Dec 31. Fantasy of Lights is one of three attractions in the Fort Wayne Light Fest, along with Wild Lights at the Fort Wayne Zoo and the holiday lights at Parkview Field, and a combination ticket covers all three at a discount. Franke Park is at 1750 Goshen Road, and the zoo is in the same park, so some families visit both on one trip.
Parent tip: Look up nightly hours and ticket prices on the park's page before you go, since they are not on the tourism listing.

Winter WonderLab is a seasonal exhibit at Science Central built around hands-on STEAM activities with a holiday twist. Kids can test which sled runs fastest, launch giant marshmallows into a giant cup of hot cocoa, build an igloo from oversized blocks, make an elf ornament for the tree and see how many times a sheet of paper can be folded and cut into a snowflake.
There is also Icy's Skate Rink, a sock-skating rink sponsored by the Fort Wayne Komets, plus winter and holiday photo spots. The exhibit opens on Nov 25 during the downtown Night of Lights, with performances from the Fort Wayne Youtheatre and a hot cocoa bar on opening day, and it runs through Jan 31, 2027. It is included with regular Science Central admission, so the rest of the museum's exhibits are open too.

The Festival of Gingerbread has been a Fort Wayne holiday tradition since 1986 and is one of downtown's most popular seasonal events. Each year local gingerbread artists set up their creations in the historic Shields Room at The History Center.
The artists range from Pre-K students to professionals, so children often find displays made by kids close to their own age. The 2026 festival opens Nov 27 and runs through Dec 20, which makes it a four decade tradition this year. The History Center is at 302 East Berry Street in downtown Fort Wayne. It is an indoor stop that fits well with other downtown holiday outings. Admission details and daily hours are posted by the museum, so confirm them on the event page before visiting.
Parent tip: Look at the venue's hours before you go, since the display is open during museum hours rather than all day.

The town of Huntertown, just north of Fort Wayne, invites families to the lighting of its Christmas tree at Huntertown Family Park. The listing says the lighting is held with Santa and a sleigh, which gives children a chance to see Santa arrive.
The event is on Sunday, Nov 29, 2026, the weekend after Thanksgiving. The park is at 2302 Woods Road in Huntertown. The Visit Fort Wayne listing is short and does not give a start time, a cost or a program of activities, so it is best to confirm details with the town before heading out. Because the lighting is an outdoor community event in late November, warm clothes are a good idea. Huntertown is a town north of Fort Wayne, so the event suits families who live in that part of Allen County.
Parent tip: The listing gives no start time, so check with the town before you go. Dress for the cold.

The Fort Wayne Firefighters Museum presents a playful Christmas event called Saving Santa. At 1 pm, Santa gets stuck on the museum roof, and the crowd needs a Fort Wayne Fire Department ladder truck to come save him.
Once Santa is safely down, he goes inside the museum to meet with the children. The event is free and takes place on Sunday, Dec 6, 2026, at the museum at 226 West Washington Boulevard in downtown Fort Wayne. Kids who like fire trucks will enjoy watching the ladder truck at work. The listing describes it simply as Christmas at the museum, so plan to arrive a little before 1 pm to see the rescue.

The event is on Saturday, Dec 12, 2026, at The Philharmonic Center, 826 Ewing Street in downtown Fort Wayne, and the listing shows a $15 admission. Countdown to Noon is a New Year's Eve program held at a kid-friendly hour. At the Main Library, families can try several family activities and then gather together to count down to a Happy Noon Year.
The program is listed for toddlers, preschoolers and children through grade 6, and it takes place in the Children's Services Department and Globe Room on Thursday, Dec 31, 2026, from 10:30 am to noon. Space is limited, so the library asks families to register in advance to hold a spot, and registration guarantees a seat until the event begins. Accessibility needs can be shared with the library at ask@acpl.info.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will also join the community at Dream Center's gym, 16 West Morgan Avenue, for Santa's Workshop. Children can write letters to Santa and have their picture taken with Mr. and Mrs. Claus. The parade is free to watch and takes place on Sunday, Nov 22, 2026. The musical based on Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a record-setting Broadway holiday sensation, and its national tour stops in South Bend at the Morris Performing Arts Center. The show tells the classic Dr. Seuss story of the Grinch and the Whos of Whoville and features songs from the stage production.
The performance is on Friday, Nov 6, 2026 at 7:30 pm. The Morris is at 211 North Michigan Street in downtown South Bend. The Visit South Bend Mishawaka listing does not give a ticket price, so families should buy tickets through the theater. Because it is an evening performance on a weekday, plan for a later bedtime, and the story is familiar enough that preschoolers who have read the book can follow along. The theater is part of the downtown arts district, and the Downtown for the Holidays events begin a few weeks later.

South Bend Civic Theatre presents Miracle on 34th Street, a classic holiday story in which an eccentric older gentleman who looks like Santa Claus is hired by Macy's flagship store in New York City. He believes himself to be Santa, and a serious six-year-old girl and her mother must decide whether to believe him.
The story asks whether those who believe in him can prove it in court, and whether he is just a nice man with a white beard. The production runs from Dec 4 to Dec 20, 2026 at the theatre, 403 North Main Street in South Bend. Tickets are sold through the theatre's ticket system. The oldest continuously operating community theatre in the South Bend area, the Civic is a good choice for families with school-age children who enjoy live stories about Santa.

Southold Dance Theater presents The Nutcracker ballet for its 45th production anniversary. The performance features music recorded and performed by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, and it takes place at the Morris Performing Arts Center in downtown South Bend.
The matinee is on Saturday, Dec 12, 2026 from 2 to 4 pm, which suits families with children who would struggle with an evening show. The Morris is at 211 North Michigan Street. The Visit South Bend Mishawaka listing does not give a ticket price, so families should check the Morris box office or the dance company for prices and seating. The Nutcracker is a good first ballet for school-age children, and a Saturday afternoon performance leaves the rest of the day free for other downtown holiday stops such as Santa's House.
Parent tip: Check ticket prices with the theater. A Saturday matinee is easier for young children than an evening show.

The Southport Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library is welcoming Silly Safaris for a Meet a Reindeer evening. Families can see a reindeer and other animals up close, ask the handlers questions, and take a picture with the critters.
The drop in session runs one hour on a Tuesday evening, is open to all ages, and is free with no registration. It is a quick, memorable stop for south side families and a fun way for kids to learn about the animals behind the Santa stories. Other branches across the city host the same visit on different December dates. Bring a phone or camera for photos, and arrive early in the hour for the best chance to see the animals before families leave.
Parent tip: Drop in any time during the hour; no registration needed.

For one evening the Indiana State Museum invites families to wear their favorite pajamas to Celebration Crossing, its holiday exhibit. The night includes a visit with Santa and a 5 x 7 photo together, a ride on the Snowfall Express train, a live animal show with Hedgehog Hannah and hot chocolate.
The museum describes it as a night for families with little ones younger than 6, which makes it a cozy pre-bedtime outing for toddlers and preschoolers. A separate event ticket is required, and the Santa photo is included in the event price. The museum's Santa schedule shows which Santa will be at the party. The party takes place inside the museum, so it is an easy winter outing even on a cold December night.
Parent tip: Buy the separate event ticket ahead; it is not included with regular admission. Kids are encouraged to come in pajamas.

A story for the drive home
A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.
