Circle of Lights is Indianapolis's big holiday kickoff, and 2026 marks its 64th year. On the evening after Thanksgiving, Monument Circle fills with live music, performers, vendors, food trucks and holiday activities, and Santa is part of the celebration. The switch is flipped before 7 pm to light the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and WTHR Channel 13 broadcasts the lighting from 6 to 7 pm.
The event is free. A fun detail for kids: the winner of the AES Indiana coloring contest gets to take the stage and flip the switch. Festivities run from 5 to 8 pm, so families with little ones can arrive early and leave after the lighting. Expect big crowds downtown, so plan parking or transit ahead of time and dress warmly for an evening outdoors on the Circle.
Parent tip: Arrive early for a view of the stage; the lighting happens before 7 pm.

The Indiana State Museum's 2026 Santa schedule includes Santa's Holiday Breakfast on select weekend mornings. Breakfasts in the historic L.S. Ayres Tea Room are listed for November 28, December 12 and December 20, and breakfasts in the Great Hall are listed for November 29, December 5, December 6 and December 13.
Each breakfast date is paired with that day's visiting Santa, and the Tea Room setting is a nod to the downtown L.S. Ayres department store tradition many Hoosier families remember. The schedule page does not list ticket prices or seating times, so check the museum's program listing or call 317.232.1637 before you go. After breakfast, families can stay to explore the museum. Santa visits continue in the museum for the rest of the day after each breakfast, so families can also take photos with Santa before exploring the galleries.
Parent tip: Ticket prices and exact seating times are not on the schedule page; call the museum at 317.232.1637 to book.

Kids can meet a real reindeer, along with other animals, when Silly Safaris visits the Warren Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library. The drop in session lets families ask questions about the animals and take a picture with the critters.
The visit runs one hour on a Monday evening and is open to all ages and families. It is free and no registration is required. Silly Safaris is bringing the reindeer to several Indianapolis Public Library branches this season, including Southport, Decatur, Glendale, Michigan Road and Fort Ben, so check the library calendar if another branch is closer to home. The reindeer visit is an easy, low key outing on a school night, and photos with the animals make a fun holiday keepsake.
Parent tip: Bring a phone or camera for a picture with the reindeer. Other branches host the same visit on later dates.

Magical Mornings open Celebration Crossing, the Indiana State Museum's holiday exhibit, an hour before the museum opens to everyone else. The quieter setting is built for families with children 6 and younger. Kids can visit with Santa, play with the elves in Santa's Front Yard, help care for the reindeer in the Reindeer Barn and ride the Snowfall Express train.
Two interactive story times run at 9:15 and 9:45 am, so there is time to fit in both the stories and a Santa visit within the hour. The program is included with regular museum admission, which is $23 for adults and $17 for youth, and free for members. Buying tickets online saves $1 per ticket. Santa's appearances are posted on the museum's Santa schedule if you want to confirm before you go.

For one evening the Indiana State Museum invites families to wear their favorite pajamas to Celebration Crossing, its holiday exhibit. The night includes a visit with Santa and a 5 x 7 photo together, a ride on the Snowfall Express train, a live animal show with Hedgehog Hannah and hot chocolate.
The museum describes it as a night for families with little ones younger than 6, which makes it a cozy pre-bedtime outing for toddlers and preschoolers. A separate event ticket is required, and the Santa photo is included in the event price. The museum's Santa schedule shows which Santa will be at the party. The party takes place inside the museum, so it is an easy winter outing even on a cold December night.
Parent tip: Buy the separate event ticket ahead; it is not included with regular admission. Kids are encouraged to come in pajamas.

A story for the drive home
A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.
