Pumpkin train or haunted train?

Pumpkin and costume rides. Daytime or early evening, built for little kids. Kids ride in costume, many railroads hand out treats or let each child pick a pumpkin, and nothing jumps out at anyone. These are the right call for toddlers through about first grade.

Haunted rides. Evening or night rides meant to be spooky, sometimes with costumed actors, a haunted car or a dark stretch of woods. Many railroads recommend them for ages 8 and up, and some say plainly they are not for young children. We list the operator's own age guidance on every one.

Before you book a Halloween train

  • Book the earliest weekend you can. The Saturday before Halloween sells out first at nearly every railroad, and many sell online only.
  • Check the costume rules. Kids in costume are welcome everywhere we list, but several railroads ask adults to skip masks, fake weapons and full face paint.
  • Ask about the pumpkin. Some tickets include one pumpkin per child, some charge extra and some have no pumpkin stop at all. Each state page says which.
  • Plan for a cold car. Many heritage cars are unheated or open-air, and evening rides get chilly fast in October. Put a layer under the costume.
  • Expect the weather to win. Open-car pumpkin trains are sometimes cancelled for rain or wind, and railroads usually post that on Facebook first.

For the kid who is scared of the dark part

There is a tunnel in Rally Takes the Train. Rally can't see a thing, and he is scared, and then there is a big bright light and happy cheers on the other side. My mom dreamed up this story before she passed, and I think she knew that the scary part of a trip is usually short, and that the people you love are sitting right next to you through it.

The weekend right before Halloween usually sells out first, often by early October. Earlier October weekends and weekday rides tend to stay open longer. Most railroads sell tickets online only and close sales a day or two before departure, so if a date shows sold out online, call the depot about walk-up seats.
