Halloween Train Rides in California (2026)

In California, the same Saturday can mean shorts and sunscreen at the Irvine Park Railroad pumpkin patch and winter layers for a night train at 4,800 feet in Portola. That spread is the whole story of Halloween trains here, and it is why this page sorts rides by region as much as by date. If you are looking beyond California, start with our state-by-state guide to Halloween train rides.

Twelve family rides still have dates ahead or are listed for October: eight pumpkin and costume rides and four haunted ones. One of the haunted rides, the Halloween Limited near Yosemite, is already sold out, and two Northern California pumpkin trains (the Skunk Train in Willits and River Fox in West Sacramento) have not posted firm 2026 dates, so we say so in each listing.

Every price, time and policy below comes from the railroads' own pages or the family sites that cover them, and anything the operator has not posted is marked plainly. Booking always goes through the railroad.

The short version

Every family haunted ride on this list is in Northern California or the Sierra, so Southern California kids who want a night train face a long drive.

Look inside the book

A dark tunnel, a brave corgi. Bring Rally along.

In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi rides into a dark tunnel, gets a little scared, and comes out to a big bright light and happy cheers. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to a California pumpkin train.

Campo: Pumpkin Express at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $18.95About 90 minutesDates left: Oct 24 to Oct 31

The Pumpkin Express rolls down the hill from Campo Depot on the historic San Diego and Arizona Railway in decorated vintage cars, and the museum encourages everyone, grown-ups included, to arrive in costume. Coach seats are restored 1920s commuter cars. First Class puts you in Santa Fe lounge car #1509 with a snack bar, an attendant and an open-air platform. Kids 6 and up can also ride in the locomotive cab for $50, but there are only two cab spots per train, so that is the seat to grab first.

One honest caveat: the 2026 page does not say a pumpkin is included, even though older local press described pumpkin picking on past runs. The museum's FAQ says light snacks are sold at the Depot Gift Shop and picnic food is allowed on the train.

Willits: Pumpkin Express on the Skunk Train

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeAbout 2 hoursDates left: Dates TBA

The Skunk Train's Pumpkin Express leaves the Willits Depot on a 16-mile round trip of about two hours, out through the redwoods to a pumpkin patch in a redwood glade at Crowley. The railroad's 2025 press release called it Northern California's only pumpkin patch train ride, with about 45 minutes each way and time at the patch to pick a pumpkin and explore under the trees. Dogs can come too with their own ticket.

The caveat is a big one: the railroad had not posted 2026 dates, times or prices as of Oct 14. A September 2026 Marin Mommies roundup lists October departures on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and prices from $83.75, but neither is confirmed on the operator site. A separate 21+ car runs on some weekend trains, so make sure you book a regular family car.

Suisun City: Pumpkin Patch 2026 at the Western Railway Museum

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $18.70Dates left: Oct 17 to Oct 25

Here the train itself is half the fun. Riders board historic electric interurban cars (closer to a big vintage trolley than a steam train) and roll out to Gum Grove Farm, where the patch has a giant hay fort, a zipline, tractor rides, a petting zoo and live music. Your ticket covers unlimited rides back and forth, so a train-loving three-year-old can ride, play and ride again. The first train leaves at 10 AM and they run about every 30 minutes after that.

Budget for extras. Pumpkins, food, drinks and pumpkin chucking are not included, and local Rotary Clubs sell the pumpkins and food. Older listings said patch purchases were cash only, so bring some just in case. The ticket page warns that tickets sell out fast.

Fremont: Haunted Train at Ardenwood Historic Farm

Best for: Older kids who like spookyFrom $19.50About 20 minutesDates left: Oct 16 to Oct 25

This is the rare after-dark ride built with small kids in mind. The railroad's own words are "spooky, not scary": no jump scares, loud sounds or gore, and a focus on families with children under 12. The open-air narrow gauge train spends about 20 minutes winding through the decorated Eucalyptus Woods past glowing pumpkins, friendly cowboys and the Witch of Ardenwood, and 510 Families says the conductors tell spooky stories and run Halloween trivia.

Two things to know before you go. Kids 6 and under ride on a grown-up's lap, and costumes have real rules: nothing wider than the body, no masks on teens or adults, no costume lights. The farm's pumpkin patch is closed in the evening, so there is no patch play afterward.

Felton: Thomas & Percy's Halloween Party at Roaring Camp Railroads

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $2525 minutesDates left: Oct 17 to Oct 25

This one is a Thomas the Tank Engine day out, not a spooky ride. Kids get a 25-minute train ride with Thomas (Percy joins on select dates), meet Sir Topham Hatt, and then fill the rest of the day with Pick-A-Pumpkin, pumpkin decorating, a costume contest, bounce houses, a bubble station, crafts, storytelling and a magician.

Tickets are tied to a ride time and a specific car, so look at which one you are buying: Canopy cars are 1 to 3 and 6 to 8, Coach cars are 4 and 5, and Car 5 is ADA accessible. Roaring Camp runs rain or shine with no refunds or exchanges, and pets stay home. Hot dogs, hamburgers and fries are sold on site. The event page does not print the year, but its dates match the 2026 weekends.

Fish Camp: Halloween Limited on the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad

Best for: Older kids who like spookyFrom $42.40About 3.5 hoursDates left: Oct 23 to Oct 25

The Halloween Limited is a whole evening in the forest: check-in and trick or treating at 4 PM, a hot dog dinner at 5, a 5:45 PM train, spooky storytelling at Lewis Creek Amphitheater, and back by 7:30. The railroad calls it family friendly and open to all ages. Fright Class (ages 3 and up) adds table service, a story in the caboose and a turn up in the cupola watching for scary creatures.

The catch: the Visit Yosemite Madera County listing shows the 2026 run as sold out ("We'll haunt you again in 2027!"). The railroad's own page still shows older dates with no year, so if you want to try for a cancellation, check the operator site directly. Fish Camp sits around 5,000 feet, so dress kids for a cold night.

Jamestown: Harvest Haunt at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $18About 45 minutesDates left: Oct 17 to Oct 31

Harvest Haunt is a 45-minute daytime excursion from the historic Jamestown depot out into the Mother Lode countryside, and each weekend gets its own costume theme, which gives kids something to plan for all week: Critters & Creatures on Oct 17 and 18, then Princesses & Pirates on Oct 24 and 25. The page does not list a theme for Oct 31, so any costume works that day.

Kids 5 and under ride free, which makes this an easy budget call for families with preschoolers. Railtown notes that the locomotive can change on short notice because of weather, mechanical or staffing factors, so don't promise a particular engine. The page does not print the year, but the dates line up with 2026 weekends.

Jamestown: Skeleton Starlight at Railtown 1897

Best for: Older kids who like spookyFrom $2345 minutesDates left: Oct 17 to Oct 31

Skeleton Starlight is Railtown's evening ride, a 45-minute trip to a spooky Western ghost town that the park bills as "a special, family-friendly Halloween-themed evening train ride." A 2024 Visit Tuolumne County listing described witches boarding near a haunted village to hand out treat bags, plus costumed ghouls, dancing skeletons and singing pumpkins at the depot. The 2026 page confirms only the ride and park admission, so treat those extras as what past years looked like.

With departures at 6:00 and 7:30 PM, the earlier train is the kinder choice for a preschool bedtime. Jamestown is in the Sierra foothills, where it gets cold fast once the sun goes down.

Portola: Pumpkin Patch Express at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $15Dates left: Oct 17 to Oct 25

Up in Portola, admission is priced by the carload rather than by the head: $20 per car, or $15 if you bring four non-perishable canned goods for EPCAN, Portola's food bank. For a family of five, that math is hard to beat. Pumpkin patch trains leave hourly from 1 PM to 5 PM and carry families out to choose a pumpkin (pumpkins cost extra). The museum opens at 10 AM, so you can arrive early and look around before the trains start.

Admission appears to be paid at the gate, and no online ticketing is listed. Portola sits at about 4,800 feet, so a sunny afternoon can turn chilly quickly.

Portola: Super Spooky Night Trains at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum

Best for: Older kids who like spookyDates left: Oct 17 to Oct 24

On the two Saturdays of its pumpkin weekends, the same Portola museum runs Super Spooky Night Trains, leaving hourly from 7 PM to 9 PM. That is close to everything the museum has posted. It does not say how long the ride is, what happens on board or how scary it gets, and it is not clear whether the night trains need a separate payment beyond the $20 carload admission.

Because the scare level is unknown, this is one to save for kids who already enjoy a little Halloween spook, or to ask the museum about before you drive up. The gate closes at 8:30 PM, and late October nights at about 4,800 feet can approach freezing, so bring winter layers.

West Sacramento: Pumpkin Patch Express on the River Fox Train

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeAbout 1 hourDates left: Dates TBA

River Fox Train's Pumpkin Patch Express leaves Elkhorn Station off I-5 and rolls through Yolo County farmland to the River Fox pumpkin patch (run with Dave's Pumpkin Patch). Kids pick a pumpkin and get warm apple cider and a donut, and the railroad's page lists a UFO burger meal back at the station. Costumes are encouraged.

Details are thin this year, so treat this listing as low confidence. The railroad says it runs "All October Long," but the only 2026 date confirmed in listings was Oct 10, at $25 per person, and the ride length (about an hour plus festivities) comes from a third-party summary. Check the operator site for remaining dates. The railroad asks riders to arrive 30 minutes early, does not refund missed rides, and takes cards only (cash for tips).

Orange: Pumpkin Patch at the Irvine Park Railroad

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $16Dates left: Oct 14 to Nov 1

For Orange County and LA families this is the easy one: the Patch at Irvine Regional Park is open every day through Nov 1. On weekends through Oct 25, a reservation buys a one-hour arrival window, one train or wagon ride and two hours in the Patch. Weekdays need no reservation, and neither do Oct 31 or Nov 1. The Patch hosted the Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off on Sept 19, so giant pumpkins are on display.

Activities such as John Deere Racers (ages 5 to 8) and Mini Diggers (5 and up) take $8 tickets on top of entry, and the park charges its own vehicle fee. Reservations are online only and missed ones are forfeited. Dogs are not allowed in the Patch. The Orange County Zoo is a five-minute walk away with no reservation needed.

If Your Four-Year-Old Is Worried About the Witch of Ardenwood

Most of California's list is daylight and pumpkins, with nothing designed to frighten: Irvine Park, Campo, Suisun City, Harvest Haunt in Jamestown and the Thomas party at Roaring Camp are safe bets for a child who is still deciding how they feel about Halloween.

Ardenwood is the after-dark ride most likely to work for a nervous preschooler. The railroad promises no jump scares, loud sounds or gore, the trip lasts about 20 minutes, and kids 6 and under sit on a grown-up's lap the whole way, which helps a lot. The darkest part is the stretch through the Eucalyptus Woods, lit by glowing pumpkins. Before you go, tell your child the witch and the cowboys are people in costumes and that nobody will jump out at the train, then agree on a signal (a squeeze of the hand) for "I want to look at you instead."

Skeleton Starlight is billed as family friendly, but past years included costumed ghouls, so it suits kids who already like dress-up spookiness. Portola's night trains have not posted a scare level at all; skip them with a jumpy toddler unless the museum tells you otherwise.

Watercolor view from inside a dark tunnel looking out at a sunny beach and cliffs
From Rally Takes the Train, watercolor by Leslie Dunn.

My mom dreamed up a moment where Rally's train, with Mom and Dad aboard, rolls into a tunnel and everything goes black. He can't see a thing, and he's scared, until a big bright light appears and his big ears pick up happy cheers. Then the tunnel opens onto a track by the cliffs and the sea. She never got to write it down herself, so I did. If the dark woods at Ardenwood have your little one worried, read that page together on the drive, then let them color Rally waiting for the light with a few free Rally pages printed before the ride.

Fog, Santa Anas and Sierra Frost: October Ride Weather by Region

Along the coast and around the Bay, the rides at Ardenwood, Roaring Camp and Suisun City often see fog and a damp chill after sunset, with evenings commonly dropping into the 50s. Ardenwood's cars are open-air, so jackets and a rain layer belong in the bag. Northern California can also see its first rains in late October; Ardenwood runs in light rain and refunds only if it cancels.

Sacramento-area and Delta pumpkin trains tend to have warm, dry afternoons (often 75 to 85 degrees early in the month, cooler later) and dusty, sunny patches, so hats and water matter more than coats. In Orange County and inland San Diego County, days are usually warm to hot, and a Santa Ana wind event can push Irvine Park and Campo into the 90s, although Campo's backcountry cools off noticeably by late afternoon.

The Sierra is a different season entirely. Jamestown gets cold quickly after dark, and Fish Camp (about 5,000 feet) and Portola (about 4,800 feet) can approach or dip below freezing on late October nights, with early storms bringing rain or snow. For Skeleton Starlight, the Halloween Limited or the Portola night trains, pack winter hats, gloves and a blanket. These are general climate patterns, not forecasts.

Before You Load the Car: California Railroad Fine Print

  • Ardenwood: 510 Families suggests lining up about 30 minutes early so your group can sit together. There is a real bathroom at the station, and nothing but water and baby formula is allowed on board.
  • Bring a little cash for the Western Railway Museum patch, where older listings said purchases were cash only, but plan on cards at River Fox, which takes cards only except for cash tips.
  • Irvine Park reservations are online only and missed ones are forfeited. When the park fills, overflow parking is at Santiago Canyon College about a mile away, and the park's vehicle fee is separate from your ticket.
  • Campo's online sales close 36 hours before departure, so a last-minute Saturday plan may mean hoping for in-person tickets at the depot. Picnic food is allowed on the train.
  • Strollers: Roaring Camp has stroller parking, and Ardenwood lets you bring one through the line but not onto the train. Most other railroads here have not posted a policy, so check the operator site.
  • Campo's Sip & Scare Sunset Special is adults only (21+), so it is not a family option even though it shares the depot with the Pumpkin Express.
  • Not a Halloween train, but close: the Southern California Railway Museum's Perris Appreciation Day on Oct 17 has a costume contest, a treat trail and train and trolley rides. Rides are free for Perris residents, workers, students and members; others should check the operator site for prices.

The Next Closest Halloween Trains Outside California

Next door is thin this year. Nevada's Virginia & Truckee Railroad had only a Mark Twain Days train listed for October, with no Halloween or pumpkin train confirmed, so check the operator site before planning around it. Oregon and Arizona railroads were not checked for this guide.

Past that, the nearest states in our guide are a real trip. Colorado's daytime costume trains in Golden and Georgetown are roughly 1,000 miles from Los Angeles, and if your kids want a true haunted ride, Texas has haunted night trains in Grapevine and Palestine about 1,400 miles away.

Rally’s Spooky Train Ride: Halloween shirts

The tunnel page from the book, Rally on his red seat in the dark, is printed on black shirts in sizes for the whole family, from baby to 5XL. A matching set makes for easy pumpkin train photos and an easy costume under a jacket. See everything in the Rally shop.

A train book for the ride

If what your kids really want is a long look out a train window, the Pacific Surfliner along the Southern California coast or the Capitol Corridor between Sacramento and the Bay makes a very different kind of train day.

Several do. Roaring Camp in Felton builds Pick-A-Pumpkin into its Thomas party, the Skunk Train from Willits stops at a patch in Crowley for pumpkin picking, and the River Fox from West Sacramento includes picking a pumpkin. At Campo yes, at Ardenwood mostly no. The Pacific Southwest Railway Museum allows picnic food on the Pumpkin Express and sells light snacks at the Depot Gift Shop, and First Class adds a complimentary snack bar.
