Halloween Train Rides in Nevada (2026)

Only in Nevada does a Halloween train ask riders to watch the desert dark for UFOs: the Nevada Northern Railway's Haunted Ghost Train out of Ely promises headless horsemen and hitchhiking ghosts out the windows too. Five Nevada rides still have dates on or after October 14, three gentle pumpkin and costume rides and two haunted ones, and they sit hours apart in three very different corners of the state. Our guide to Halloween trains in all 50 states has the neighbors if none of these fit.

For most families the choice comes down to where you live. Las Vegas has the Boulder City Halloween Express, an early evening costume ride about 35 minutes from the Strip on the next two weekends. Reno has three choices within about 40 minutes: Carson City's steam-powered Harvest Train, the Virginia & Truckee's Pumpkin Patch Express up the hill in Virginia City, and the V&T's after-dark Graveyard Train at month's end. Ely's Ghost Train is the one families drive across the state for, and it is built to scare.

The short version

  • Pumpkin and costume rides: Las Vegas families have the Boulder City Halloween Express, about 35 minutes from the Strip, with non-scary costume trains at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 PM on Oct 17, 18, 24 and 25 and a Monster Mash afterward.
  • Reno families have two daytime choices 35 to 40 minutes away: the Carson City Harvest Train on Oct 17 and 18, with steam rides and a pumpkin patch on one wristband, or the Virginia City Pumpkin Patch Express, whose 2026 dates you should confirm with the railroad.
  • Haunted rides: The Haunted Ghost Train in Ely is a scary 7:00 PM ride on Oct 16, 17, 23 and 24, about 4 hours from Las Vegas and a bit more from Reno, so most families make a night of it.
  • Older kids near Reno can ride the Haunted Graveyard Train to Gold Hill on Oct 29, 30 and 31, but the railroad has not posted times or a year on its page, so confirm before you promise anyone a graveyard night.

Oct 17 and 18 is the one weekend when four of Nevada's five rides are running, so look at tickets now.

A dark tunnel, a brave corgi. Bring Rally along.

In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi rides into a dark tunnel, gets a little scared, and comes out to a big bright light and happy cheers. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to a Nevada pumpkin train.

Next: Sat Oct 17Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $20About 90 minutesDates left: Oct 17 to Oct 25

This is Southern Nevada's gentle option, and the museum is clear that it is a non-scary family event. Kids ride in costume on a 30-minute train, then the night turns into a Monster Mash dance party with a costume contest and light refreshments. Trains leave at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 PM, the whole outing takes about 90 minutes, and the museum is about 35 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip.

It now runs both days of the next two weekends, Oct 17, 18, 24 and 25 (an Oct 11 night was lost to a storm). Travel Nevada lists $25 for adults and $20 for kids, but the museum's own page does not print a price, and the museum warns these nights do sell out, so check the operator site.

Virginia City: Pumpkin Patch Express on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad

Next: Fri Oct 16Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $19Dates left: Oct 16 to Oct 18

The V&T calls this "a hay ride of steel" on a 150-year-old line, with an iron horse pulling families out to the pumpkin patch. It is a daytime family ride, and the railroad says the ticket price includes a pumpkin for the trip home.

Our listing has Friday, Oct 16 through Sunday, Oct 18, but the railroad's own page prints no 2026 dates, times or prices, and there is no online booking link. Check the operator site or call the depot before you drive up the hill. The same railroad runs an after-dark Graveyard Train at the end of the month for older kids.

The Ghost Train is a scary night trip out of the East Ely Depot, with ghost stories on board and frights along the roadside: riders watch for UFOs, headless horsemen and hitchhiking ghosts in the Nevada desert dark. Costumes are welcome.

It leaves at 7:00 PM on two Friday and Saturday pairs and takes about 90 minutes. Fares are $45 for adults, $38 for seniors and $20 for kids 4 to 12, with children under 4 free. The railway has not posted a minimum age that our research could read, so think hard before bringing a preschooler, and check the operator site.

Carson City: Harvest Train at the Nevada State Railroad Museum

Next: Sat Oct 17Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $15Dates left: Oct 17 to Oct 18

The Harvest Train is a daytime fall festival at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, and nothing about it is scary. Historic steam locomotives pull the rides: the big V&T No. 25 and the tiny Glenbrook. One all-day wristband covers every train ride, plus handcar rides from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, a pumpkin patch and games in the park, with food trucks selling lunch.

It runs Saturday, Oct 17 and Sunday, Oct 18, from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. There are no single-ride tickets during the event, and member discounts do not apply. Costume rules, stroller policy and parking were not posted, so check the operator site.

Virginia City: Haunted Halloween Graveyard Train on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad

Next: Thu Oct 29Best for: Older kids who like spookyFrom $19About 40 minutesDates left: Oct 29 to Oct 31

This is the V&T's after-dark Halloween ride. Open-air cars roll the 4 miles between Virginia City and the old Gold Hill Graveyard, about 40 minutes in all, with haunted characters along the route, including one the railroad calls the Executioner. The railroad bills it as spine-tingling, if you dare, with a touch of magic, so it suits school-age kids who like a scare more than preschoolers.

One big caveat: the railroad's page lists Oct 29, 30 and 31 with no year and no departure times. Travel Nevada's 2026 listing gives the same dates and $19 to $26 fares, but confirm on the operator site or by phone before you plan a night around it.

Already wrapped for 2026

  • Pumpkin Patch Train (Nevada Northern Railway), Ely: Ran Oct 3, 4, 10 and 11 and has wrapped for this year; the railway's Ghost Train is still running.

Rally’s Spooky Train Ride: Halloween shirts

The tunnel page from the book, Rally on his red seat in the dark, is printed on black shirts in sizes for the whole family, from baby to 5XL. Skip the costume hassle: no masks to fog up, no capes caught in the train door, just a shirt that already says Halloween and layers under a coat on a cold platform. A matching set makes for easy pumpkin train photos. See everything in the Rally shop.

Desert Warm in Boulder City, Near Freezing in Ely and Virginia City

Nevada's Halloween trains run in two different climates. Around Las Vegas, October highs land in the upper 70s to 80s, so a Boulder City costume ride is more about water than coats, and a heavy costume can get hot. The trains there leave in the early evening, though, so tuck a light layer in the bag for after sunset.

Virginia City and Ely both sit above 6,000 feet and get near freezing at night. The Virginia City pumpkin run and Carson City's Harvest Train happen in daylight, but bring jackets anyway. For Ely's 7:00 PM Ghost Train and the V&T's open-air Graveyard Train, dress kids in winter layers under their costumes.

Nevada Train Tips Worth Knowing Before You Drive

  • Boulder City's Halloween Express now runs both days of the Oct 17 and 18 and Oct 24 and 25 weekends, with trains at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 PM. The museum says these nights sell out, so pick a time early.
  • The V&T's own page does not print 2026 dates or prices for the Pumpkin Patch Express or the Graveyard Train, and it has no online booking, so call the depot at (775) 847-0380 before you drive up.
  • Ely is about 4 hours from Las Vegas and about 4 hours 15 minutes from Reno, and the Ghost Train leaves at 7:00 PM. Most families will want a hotel night rather than a same-day round trip.
  • Carson City's Harvest Train sells only all-day wristbands ($25 adults, $15 kids 4 to 17, 3 and under free), so plan to stay a while and ride more than once.
  • The Nevada Northern Railway's Pumpkin Patch Train has wrapped for the year, so the Ghost Train is the only Ely Halloween ride left.
  • The V&T says parking is free across the street from the Virginia City depot. The other operators did not post stroller or parking rules our research could read, so check each site.

Headless Horsemen in Ely, Monster Mash in Boulder City: Matching the Ride to Your Kid

Three of Nevada's five rides are easy calls for little kids. The Boulder City Halloween Express is billed by the museum as non-scary, Carson City's Harvest Train is a daytime festival with steam rides and a pumpkin patch, and the Virginia City Pumpkin Patch Express is a daytime family ride out to a patch. Any of them works for a first Halloween train.

The Ely Ghost Train and the V&T Graveyard Train are the opposite. Both run after dark and are designed to spook: Ely with ghost stories and frights outside the windows, Virginia City with costumed characters waiting at the old Gold Hill Graveyard. If an older child wants to go and a younger one is tagging along, practice the script beforehand: "Everything outside the window is grown-ups pretending, and you can look at me instead of the window any time." For most preschoolers, this is a ride to save for a few years.

Watercolor view from inside a dark tunnel looking out at a sunny beach and cliffs
From Rally Takes the Train, watercolor by Leslie Dunn.

In our book, Rally's train goes into a dark tunnel and he cannot see a thing. Then his big ears catch happy cheers, a bright light appears, and the train rolls out along the cliffs by the sea. The Ely Ghost Train has a lot of desert dark out its windows, and if your bigger kid is riding, that scene is a nice one to read the week before: the dark part ends.

Little ones not ready for Ely can color the tunnel at home with our free Rally tunnel coloring pages. My mom imagined all of this first, and her story is on our site.

Across the Border From Reno, Las Vegas and Ely

Reno families are about 2 hours from a cluster of Northern California rides in the Sierra and the Sacramento area, including pumpkin trains and a few haunted night trains; our California Halloween train page has the full list. Eastern Nevada families have Utah's Heber Valley Railroad, about 50 minutes past Salt Lake City, which runs a gentle Pumpkin Train and a spooky Halloween Express; see our Utah guide.

From Kingman, Arizona, Boulder City is about 1 hour 20 minutes away, and the other direction works too: Phoenix-area families have Scottsdale's nightly Spook-Track-Ula, a little spooky ride on a park railroad, covered on our Arizona Halloween train page.

A train book for the ride

For a big-train day out of Reno with nothing spooky about it, our guide to the California Zephyr with little kids covers the Amtrak route over the Sierra.

Las Vegas, Reno and Ely Parents Ask About Nevada Halloween Trains

What Halloween events are there for kids in Boulder City, Nevada?

One family Halloween event in Boulder City is the Halloween Express at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, a non-scary costume train on Oct 17, 18, 24 and 25. Kids ride for 30 minutes, then join a Monster Mash dance party with a costume contest, and the whole evening takes about 90 minutes. Trains leave at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 PM. Travel Nevada lists $25 for adults and $20 for children, but the museum's page has no price, so check the operator site.

Is there anything to do for Halloween in Virginia City, Nevada with kids?

Yes, Virginia City has two Halloween trains on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. The daytime Pumpkin Patch Express rolls out to a pumpkin patch with a pumpkin included in the ticket, and our listing shows Oct 16, 17 and 18 at $27 for adults and $19 for kids 5 to 12. The Haunted Graveyard Train runs after dark to Gold Hill on Oct 29, 30 and 31. The railroad's page posts no 2026 times for either, so check the operator site.

What is there to do for Halloween with kids in Carson City, Nevada?

One family pick in Carson City is the Harvest Train at the Nevada State Railroad Museum on Oct 17 and 18, from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. It is a gentle daytime festival, not a haunted ride: historic steam engines V&T No. 25 and the little Glenbrook pull the trains, and there are handcar rides, a pumpkin patch and games. An all-day wristband is $25 for adults and $15 for kids 4 to 17.

Are there Halloween events for families in Ely, Nevada this October?

Ely's Halloween train is the Nevada Northern Railway's Haunted Ghost Train, a scary night ride of about 90 minutes at 7:00 PM on Oct 16, 17, 23 and 24 from the East Ely Depot. Riders hear ghost stories and watch for UFOs, headless horsemen and hitchhiking ghosts. Fares are $45 for adults, $38 for seniors and $20 for kids 4 to 12. The railway's gentler Pumpkin Patch Train already wrapped on Oct 11.

Is there a pumpkin patch train near Carson City or Virginia City, Nevada?

Yes, two of them. The Nevada State Railroad Museum's Harvest Train in Carson City adds a pumpkin patch to its steam train rides on Oct 17 and 18. Up the hill, the Virginia & Truckee's Pumpkin Patch Express runs from the Virginia City depot out to a patch, and the ticket includes a pumpkin. Its 2026 dates are not printed on the railroad's page, so check the operator site.

Is there a Halloween train for kids in Las Vegas?

The closest one is in Boulder City, about 35 minutes from Las Vegas. The Nevada State Railroad Museum's Halloween Express is a non-scary costume train on Oct 17, 18, 24 and 25, with evening departures at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 PM and a Monster Mash afterward. For older kids, Nevada's scariest Halloween train, Ely's Ghost Train, is about 4 hours away.

What are Halloween things to do with kids near Reno?

Reno families have three train options within about 40 minutes. Carson City's Harvest Train runs Oct 17 and 18 with steam rides and a pumpkin patch, about 35 minutes away. The V&T Pumpkin Patch Express in Virginia City is about 40 minutes away, and the V&T's after-dark Graveyard Train runs Oct 29 to 31 for older kids, though the railroad has not posted times. Ely's Haunted Ghost Train is about 4 hours 15 minutes away.

Can kids wear costumes on Nevada's Halloween trains?

Yes, on at least two of them. The Nevada State Railroad Museum encourages costumes for its Boulder City Halloween Express and holds a costume contest at the Monster Mash, and the Nevada Northern Railway encourages costumes on its Ghost Train. The Virginia & Truckee and the Carson City Harvest Train have not posted costume rules in our research, so check the operator site.

Is the Ely Haunted Ghost Train too scary for a toddler?

Most likely yes. The Nevada Northern Railway bills the Ghost Train as a scary night trip, with ghost stories and frights outside the windows, including headless horsemen and hitchhiking ghosts. The railway has not posted a minimum age our research could read. Toddlers are better off on the Boulder City Halloween Express, which the museum calls non-scary.

Is the Boulder City Halloween Express scary for little kids?

No, the Nevada State Railroad Museum describes it as a non-scary family event. Kids ride a 30-minute train in costume and then join a Monster Mash dance party and costume contest. Trains leave at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 PM on Oct 17, 18, 24 and 25, so plan an early dinner and a slightly later bedtime for preschoolers.

Is the V&T Graveyard Train in Virginia City too scary for young kids?

It may be for preschoolers. The Virginia & Truckee bills its Haunted Halloween Graveyard Train as spine-tingling: open-air cars run after dark to the old Gold Hill Graveyard, a ride of about 40 minutes, with haunted characters including the Executioner. No age limit is posted. The railroad's page shows Oct 29, 30 and 31 with no year or times, so confirm on the operator site.

Can we still get Nevada Halloween train tickets for this weekend?

Probably, but check each ticket page now. As of October 14, the Ely Ghost Train showed seats on Oct 16 and 17, Carson City's Harvest Train was on sale for Oct 17 and 18, and Boulder City's Halloween Express had no sold-out notice for Oct 17 or 18, though the museum says it does sell out. The V&T posts no 2026 dates online for its Pumpkin Patch Express, so call before driving to Virginia City.

How much is the Virginia City Pumpkin Patch Express?

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad's Pumpkin Patch Express was listed at $27 for adults and $19 for children 5 to 12 in our earlier research, and the railroad says the ticket includes a pumpkin. Its page does not print 2026 prices or dates now, so check the operator site or call the depot before you go.

How cold is Ely at night for the Ghost Train?

Plan on near freezing. Ely sits above 6,000 feet, and nights there get close to freezing in October, which is a big change from the warm Las Vegas valley. The Ghost Train leaves at 7:00 PM, so dress kids in warm layers, hats and gloves, and fit costumes over coats rather than under them.

Is the Nevada Northern Railway Pumpkin Patch Train still running?

No, the Nevada Northern Railway's Pumpkin Patch Train ran Oct 3, 4, 10 and 11 and has wrapped for this year. The railway's other Halloween ride, the Haunted Ghost Train, is still running on Oct 16, 17, 23 and 24, but it is a scary night trip rather than a pumpkin ride, so it suits older kids.
