Christmas Train Rides in Nevada (2026)

Nevada has more holiday trains than most people expect, and they cover the whole state. Northern Nevada has the licensed Polar Express from Carson City, a museum Santa Train a few miles away, and a train of lights out of Virginia City. Las Vegas families have two holiday trains at the state railroad museum in Boulder City, about 30 minutes from the Strip. And in Ely, the Nevada Northern Railway turns its famous Ghost Train into Santa’s Reindeer Flyer. Our Polar Express and Christmas train guide by state covers the rest of the West.

The V&T Railway Commission runs Nevada’s licensed Polar Express from the Eastgate Depot on the east side of Carson City, about 40 minutes from Reno. Every departure is at night, and the one-hour round trip is fully staged with costumed actors, music and narration. Cocoa and treats, including gluten-free options, come to your seat, Santa hands out the silver bell, and the North Pole stop has a light display that changes every year. Storybooks are on board, and the conductor will sign your own copy of the book.

Coach and deluxe seats are sold as a full bench for two. VIP options include parlor car seats, a private table for four in a historic dining car, and a family lounge in the 1907 parlor car Ardelle Mae for up to 12. Strollers, walkers and wheelchairs have to stay at the depot because the aisles are narrow, though ramps help with boarding. All sales are final.

The state railroad museum on South Carson Street has run its Santa Train for years, and it is the gentle option for Carson City and Reno families with small children. The ride is about 20 minutes, Santa visits, every rider gets a candy cane, and kids can write their letter to Santa in the depot before or after. The museum lists historic V&T locomotive No. 25 for the train.

With museum admission, which is free for visitors 17 and under, you can also see locomotives and cars decorated for the holidays in the Jacobsen Interpretive Center and the model railroad exhibit, and take a handcar ride if the weather allows. Trains leave every half hour, but the museum says they fill up.

Families ride a vintage railroad car toward Henderson and back for about 45 minutes, singing holiday songs while Santa and his helpers stroll through the train with candy canes and stop for photos.

At $12 it is one of the best holiday train values in the West. Space is limited and the museum suggests booking early. From Las Vegas and Henderson, take I-11 south, exit at Boulder City Parkway, then follow Yucca Street and Six Companies Drive to the visitor center lot.

The North Pole Express is a 30-minute train ride with a holiday sing-along and a reading of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas, ending at Santa’s Railyard, where families get hot chocolate and cookies, photos with Santa, games, a snowstorm and a snowball fight with giant cotton snowballs. Plan on about 90 minutes in all.

The museum is clear that it is not a Polar Express event and does not follow that book. It is a Las Vegas family favorite, and it sells out fast.

The Nevada Northern Railway in Ely is a National Historic Landmark that still has its original buildings, locomotives, cars and track. At Christmas it runs Santa’s Reindeer Flyer, built around a children’s book of the same name: when Santa’s reindeer come down with the flu, the railroad’s legendary Ghost Train steps in to save Christmas. On board, kids write letters to Santa, sing with elves and drink hot chocolate with cookies, and at the North Pole Santa boards to greet every passenger and give each one a keepsake.

Ely is remote, about four hours from Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, so most families make a weekend of it. Book by phone at (775) 289-2085 or online, and wear pajamas.

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad, the private operator that runs from Virginia City, covers its vintage cars inside and out with thousands of LED lights for the Electric Holiday Train O’ Lights. The heated cars run at night down the Comstock to Gold Hill, with a cup of Virginia City’s hot chocolate or apple cider, and at Santa’s Workshop at the end of the line Santa appears on the platform and reads out children’s names.

Check in at will call inside the Virginia City Depot at least 10 minutes before departure, or the railroad may sell your seats. Parking is free across the street. Seating is assigned and sales are final, so pick your date carefully, and dress warm: Virginia City sits high in the mountains.
