Halloween Train Rides in Wisconsin (2026)
At the end of Mid-Continent's line near North Freedom, a local farmer leaves pumpkins trackside at Quartzite Lake, and kids carry their pick back aboard for the ride home, as long as a parent remembered cash. It is one of seven Wisconsin trains on this page of our Halloween train rides by state with dates left after October 14, and all seven are gentle pumpkin and costume rides. We did not find a single haunted, scare-level train in Wisconsin for 2026.
The rides bunch up in two places. Southeast Wisconsin has the East Troy Railroad Museum, with Friday trick-or-treat trains and weekend harvest shuttles, about 40 minutes from Milwaukee. The Madison, Baraboo and Dells corridor has three: Mid-Continent in North Freedom, the Riverside and Great Northern in Wisconsin Dells and the Little Amerricka park train in Marshall. Out west, Osceola's Pumpkin Express is closer to the Twin Cities than to any Wisconsin metro.
Several of these cars are not heated, so read the weather notes first.
The short version
- Pumpkin and costume rides near Milwaukee and the Illinois line: For a Friday after school, the East Troy Trick or Treat Trains leave at 5 and 6 PM on Oct 16, 23 and 30, with trick-or-treating at a village park and a pumpkin back at the depot.
- On weekends, East Troy's Harvest Fest shuttle runs to The Elegant Farmer's fall festival on Oct 17, 18, 24 and 25; it is a harvest day out, not a Halloween ride.
- Pumpkin and costume rides around Madison, Baraboo and the Dells: Closest to Madison and cheapest at $10, the Little Amerricka Pumpkin Train includes any one pumpkin your child can carry.
- The Pumpkin Special at Mid-Continent runs only Oct 24 and 25, and the same afternoon the Halloween Flyer leaves once at 4:30 PM for kids in costume.
- The Riverside and Great Northern Pumpkin Train has the most dates left, running every weekend through Nov 1 with frequent departures.
- Pumpkin and costume rides in the northwest: The Osceola Pumpkin Express is the tightest on tickets: only its final weekend, Oct 16 to 18, is left, and several departures have already dropped off the calendar.
If your family wants a truly spooky train, Wisconsin did not have one in 2026; every ride here is built for little kids.

A dark tunnel, a brave corgi. Bring Rally along.
In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi rides into a dark tunnel, gets a little scared, and comes out to a big bright light and happy cheers. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to a Wisconsin pumpkin train.

Unheated Cars and Frosty Mornings: Dressing Kids for a Wisconsin October Ride
By the second half of October, Wisconsin daytime highs usually sit in the upper 40s to mid 50s, and evenings drop into the 30s with frost likely. Osceola and the northwest run colder than the lakeshore or the towns along the Illinois line, so the Pumpkin Express needs the warmest gear of anything here.
Several of these trains have no heat at all. Mid-Continent says its cars are enclosed but unheated, and East Troy's open car and Car 26 are unheated too. That means even a midday pumpkin train can call for winter coats on a raw day. Sunset is around 6:00 PM, so East Troy's 6 PM Trick or Treat train and the 4:30 PM Halloween Flyer both finish near dusk, when the temperature falls fastest. Plan for costumes that fit over a snowsuit, or a costume hat over a knit one.
East Troy: Trick or Treat Trains at the East Troy Railroad Museum
This is an electric interurban and trolley line, not a steam train. Kids ride 25 minutes out to Jim Byrnes Memorial Park, formerly Town Hall Park, for trick-or-treating, games and playground time, then ride 25 minutes back to the depot, where each child picks a pumpkin to take home. The whole outing runs about 1 hour 20 minutes.
The 6 PM train heads back around dusk, but nothing about it is meant to frighten anyone. Seats are reserved, so buy the whole group in one order to sit together. The museum's FAQ says there are no working restrooms on board, and the historic cars have a few steps and are not ADA accessible.

East Troy: Harvest Fest Shuttle to The Elegant Farmer
Harvest Fest is a fall shuttle, not a Halloween-themed ride. An all-day pass lets families ride the East Troy electric line back and forth between the East Troy Depot and The Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago, where the farm runs its Autumn Harvest Festival. Farm activities are priced separately by the farm, so the train ticket gets you there and back, not everything on site.
It works well for a toddler who loves trains more than costumes, since you can hop on a later train if a nap runs long. The museum's FAQ notes the Elegant Farmer stop has porta-potties only. The last train from The Elegant Farmer, around 4 PM, does not go back to East Troy, so park where you plan to finish.

North Freedom: Pumpkin Special at Mid-Continent Railway Museum
A 7-mile round trip in coaches and a caboose out to Quartzite Lake, where a local farmer's pumpkins wait beside the track. Kids pick one, carry it back on board and ride home with it on their lap. The trip is scheduled for 55 minutes but can run longer to give everyone time to buy.
The pumpkins are not part of the ticket. They are sold by an independent vendor, cash only, so stop at an ATM on the way. The museum also notes the wheelchair lift is at North Freedom only, so anyone who needs it cannot step off at the pumpkin stop. A Baraboo Chamber listing shows Oct 18, but the museum's own page and booking calendar show only Oct 24 and 25.

North Freedom: Halloween Flyer at Mid-Continent Railway Museum
One departure, timed for golden hour on Saturday Oct 24. The museum pitches it as a spooky costume ride, but what it actually promises is hot apple cider, a Halloween-themed treat and a 55-minute, 7-mile round trip with kids in costume, so we filed it as a pumpkin and costume ride rather than a haunted one. There is no pumpkin stop on this train.
It pairs neatly with the Pumpkin Special earlier the same day if you want a full Mid-Continent Saturday. The museum says the cars are enclosed but not heated, and it gets colder toward 5:30 PM, so bring a blanket.

Osceola: Pumpkin Express on the Osceola and St. Croix Valley Railway
Run by the Minnesota Transportation Museum from the Osceola Depot, this vintage train rides 25 minutes to Dresser, where the ticket covers a full festival: a free pumpkin per child from the patch, a hayride, live music, games, food trucks and a flea market. All-day festival admission comes with the ticket.
The festival centers on the historic 1884 Dresser Depot, which a Travel Wisconsin listing describes as haunted, though the ride itself is not a scary one. Small foldable strollers are allowed, per the operator FAQ, and there are no restrooms on the train. This is the priciest ride on the page and the closest to selling out.

Wisconsin Dells: Pumpkin Train on the Riverside and Great Northern Railway
A steam-era train trip from Hyde Park Station through rock formations and woods along the Wisconsin River, with a free pumpkin or gourd for every kid 12 and under. On the busiest weekends trains leave every 25 minutes, so families can hang around the station between rides, use the picnic pavilion and yard games, and watch locomotives come and go.
Some details are fuzzy. The booking page calls it both a 3 mile ride and a two-mile trip, and 2026 prices were not posted where they could be checked; a 2025 news report gave $21 for adults and $16 for children 3 to 12, so treat those as last year's numbers. The railroad warns these sell out quickly, and babies 2 and under still need a free ticket added to the order.

Marshall: Pumpkin Train at Little Amerricka Amusement Park
This is an amusement park train, not a historic railroad. It loops through Little Amerricka to a pumpkin patch, and the ticket covers any one pumpkin your child can carry, which turns pumpkin picking into a strength contest for most four-year-olds. At $10 it is the least expensive pumpkin train on this page.
Add mini golf for a little more, and the park's Meteor wooden roller coaster runs on a separate ticket, weather permitting. Concessions include hot cocoa and coffee. The park's pumpkin page does not print the year, though its dates line up with 2026 weekends, and it does not say whether you must buy ahead, so check before you drive over.

What Wisconsin Railroads Want You to Know Before Pumpkin Day
- Bring cash for Mid-Continent's Pumpkin Special. The pumpkins at Quartzite Lake come from an independent vendor, cash only, and are not in the ticket price.
- Osceola's Pumpkin Express is down to a handful of departures for its final weekend, Oct 16 to 18. If you want it, book this week.
- East Troy reserves seats on the Trick or Treat Trains, so buy every ticket for your group in a single order to sit together.
- Use the bathroom before you board. East Troy and Osceola both say there are no restrooms on their trains, and The Elegant Farmer stop has porta-potties only.
- The Riverside and Great Northern needs a free ticket for babies 2 and under, so add one when you book.
- Osceola allows small foldable strollers. East Troy's historic cars have steps, and no other railroad here has posted a stroller policy, so a carrier is the safer choice.
- East Troy also runs an adult Halloween dinner train on Oct 31. That one is not a family ride, so do not confuse it with the Friday Trick or Treat Trains.
Every Wisconsin Train This Year Is Toddler-Gentle, Including the Halloween Flyer
There is no haunted car or scare actor on any Wisconsin train this season. The Halloween Flyer at Mid-Continent uses the word spooky, but the museum's own description is cider, treats and costumes at golden hour. The festival at the Dresser Depot near Osceola leans on a haunted-building story from a tourism listing, yet the train ride itself is daytime and plain.
The one moment that can unsettle a small child is the light fading on East Troy's 6 PM trip back from the park, or the Flyer's return around 5:30. If your three-year-old is uneasy in the dark, book the 5 PM East Troy train, and tell them the trip home is short and ends with picking a pumpkin.

In our book, Rally wakes up early, spots a suitcase and packs his favorite things: his turtle toy, his green bone and his yellow ball. Then he heads off with Mom and Dad. With Mid-Continent's cars unheated and Osceola running colder than the rest of the state, I would let your kids pack like Rally the night before: one favorite toy, then mittens, a hat and the couch blanket.
We have printable Rally coloring sheets for the drive to the depot, and if you are curious why a corgi has his own book, this is my mom's story.
Halloween Train Options Just Across the Illinois and Michigan Borders
Kenosha, Racine and Beloit families have a closer daytime option over the state line: the Illinois Railway Museum in Union runs a costume-friendly pumpkin streetcar in northern Illinois about 45 minutes to an hour from the border, and it hands out a treat to kids in costume.
Michigan is a longer haul around the lake, so treat our roundup of Michigan pumpkin trains as a weekend trip idea; Upper Peninsula rides were not part of this research, so families up north should check locally.

Are there Halloween train rides for kids near Green Bay, Wisconsin?
Green Bay's own Great Pumpkin Train at the National Railroad Museum already ran on Oct 10 and 11, so the remaining options mean a drive. As of October 14, the nearest are Little Amerricka's Pumpkin Train in Marshall, about 2 hours 20 minutes away on Oct 17, 18, 24 and 25, and East Troy's Friday Trick or Treat Trains or the Wisconsin Dells Pumpkin Train, each about 2 hours 30 minutes away. All are gentle pumpkin and costume rides.
Do kids wear costumes on the East Troy Trick or Treat Train?
Yes, the East Troy Railroad Museum asks families to bring kids in costume. The ride heads to a village park for trick-or-treating and games, so a costume fits right in. Trains leave at 5 and 6 PM on Fridays and come back near dusk in unheated or chilly cars, so plan a costume roomy enough to go over a warm coat.
Is the Halloween Flyer at Mid-Continent too spooky for a 2 year old?
No, it is a gentle ride despite the name. The museum describes it as a golden-hour costume train with hot apple cider and a Halloween-themed treat, and there are no actors or haunted cars listed. It lasts about 55 minutes and returns around 5:30 PM. The bigger issue for a two-year-old is the cold, since the cars are not heated.
Can we still get a Wisconsin pumpkin train ticket for this weekend?
As of October 14, yes, but choose carefully. The Riverside and Great Northern in the Dells showed no sold-out departures for Oct 16 to 18. East Troy's Friday Trick or Treat Train on Oct 16 had not posted a sold-out status. Osceola's Pumpkin Express had only a few departures left for its final weekend, so it is the hardest ticket to get.
Is the pumpkin included in the Mid-Continent Pumpkin Special ticket?
No, the pumpkin costs extra. Your train ticket covers the 7-mile round trip to Quartzite Lake, and the booking listing says museum admission is included. The pumpkins waiting trackside come from an independent vendor who takes cash only. Children 2 and under ride free, and tickets for kids 3 to 15 are $13.
Are there any haunted train rides in Wisconsin this October?
We did not find a haunted, scare-level train ride in Wisconsin for 2026; every ride we researched is a gentle pumpkin or costume trip. The closest thing is Mid-Continent's Halloween Flyer in North Freedom, which leaves at 4:30 PM on Oct 24 with hot cider and treats. The festival at the 1884 Dresser Depot near Osceola leans on a haunted-building story from a tourism listing, but the train ride itself is a plain daytime trip.
Can I bring a stroller on the Pumpkin Express in Osceola?
Yes, a small foldable one. The Osceola and St. Croix Valley Railway FAQ allows small foldable strollers. That helps in Dresser, where the festival has a hayride, games and a pumpkin patch to walk. There are no restrooms on the train itself, so plan a stop at the Osceola Depot first. Infants ride on a parent's lap.
Are Wisconsin fall train cars heated?
Often they are not. Mid-Continent Railway Museum says its cars are enclosed but unheated, and East Troy's open car and Car 26 are unheated as well. With late October evenings in the 30s and frost likely, dress kids in real winter layers even for a daytime pumpkin train, and bring a blanket for the ride back.
