Halloween Train Rides in Michigan (2026)

Michigan's best-known Halloween train leaves from Smiths Creek Station inside Greenfield Village in Dearborn, roughly a 30-minute walk from the parking lots, and its regular tickets are already sold out for 2026. That sets the tone for the whole state this year: five rides still have dates on or after October 14, four in the pumpkin and costume group and one mildly haunted, and demand is running hot. For other states, see our roundup of Halloween train rides across the country.

Every confirmed ride is in the southern Lower Peninsula, from Coopersville near Grand Rapids to Flint, Dearborn, Brooklyn and Coldwater. Nothing turned up in northern Michigan or the Upper Peninsula. The Little River Railroad's steam Pumpkin Train is sold out too, so the realistic choices for most families are Coopersville, Crossroads Village in Flint and the Nite Lites train at Michigan International Speedway.

The short version

  • Pumpkin and costume rides: Grand Rapids families have the easy win: the Coopersville Pumpkin Train is about 25 minutes away, and seven departures were still bookable on Oct 13, though the railway says it sells out quickly.
  • From Detroit or Lansing, Ghosts and Goodies at Crossroads Village in Flint is about an hour away and runs nine more days. Buy the $27 Combination ticket if you want the train, since the $17 Village Only ticket skips it.
  • Lansing is about an hour from the Nite Lites Halloween train in Brooklyn, and Detroit is about 1 hour 15 minutes. It is a night ride through lights with no scary actors, and the ticket page warns of limited seating.
  • The Little River Railroad Pumpkin Train in Coldwater is sold out for 2026, so only consider it for next year.
  • Haunted rides: Michigan's one spookier pick, the Hallowe'en Express at Greenfield Village, is 20 minutes from Detroit, but general admission and Express tickets are sold out. Dining packages that include admission and a timed Express ride were still available on select evenings.

If you are coming from the west side of the state, Coopersville is the only Michigan Halloween train close to Lake Michigan.

A dark tunnel, a brave corgi. Bring Rally along.

In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi rides into a dark tunnel, gets a little scared, and comes out to a big bright light and happy cheers. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to a Michigan pumpkin train.

Coopersville: Pumpkin Train on the Coopersville & Marne Railway

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $3090 minutesDates left: Oct 17 to Oct 25

This one surprises people: there is no pumpkin patch stop. The railway says the train does not let passengers off in Marne. Instead, The Famous Pumpkin and her goofy sidekicks put on a show on board during the 90-minute continuous round trip, and each child gets a small gift and candy at the end. The coaches are decorated for fall, heated, and have restrooms.

Premium Class adds table seating, cider from Hill Brother's Orchard and a pumpkin-themed donut from Delly Belly, a Coopersville bakery. The railway encourages kids and parents to come in costume. It also warns that the Pumpkin Train sells out quickly, and the Oct 18 1:00 PM run was missing from the booking calendar on Oct 13.

Coldwater: Pumpkin Train on the Little River Railroad

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $15About 1.5 hoursDates left: Oct 18 to Oct 25

This is a real steam train, run by an all-volunteer railroad, making a round trip of about an hour and a half from Coldwater to Quincy with a layover. At the Quincy platform, families buy pumpkins and gourds (cash only) and can pick up apples and cider from Showcase Gardens & Landscaping. Kids who love engines get a bonus: during the layover you can watch the steam locomotive get switched to the other end of the train for the trip home.

The catch for 2026 is simple. The railroad's booking page lists the Pumpkin Train as sold out for the season, including both remaining Sundays. Keep it on your list for next fall.

Flint: Halloween Ghosts & Goodies and the Huckleberry Ghost Train Express at Crossroads Village

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $17Dates left: Oct 16 to Oct 30

Ghosts and Goodies is a walk-around trick-or-treat night at Crossroads Village, with 20 treat stops, a straw maze, a magic show at the Colwell Opera House, and cider and doughnuts. Local TV reports it has been an annual tradition since 1988. The train is the Huckleberry Ghost Train Express, a 40-minute ride through the autumn countryside on the historic 1800s-style line.

Read the ticket options carefully: the $17 Village Only ticket does not include the train, while the $27 Combination ticket does. The operator promises "friendly ghosts and spooky surprises" and does not market it as scary. On weekends it opens at noon, so an early ride is in daylight; weekday visits start at 5:00 PM. The parks department says trains sell out quickly.

Dearborn: Hallowe'en Express at Hallowe'en in Greenfield Village

Best for: Older kids who like spookyFrom $28Dates left: Oct 15 to Oct 25

The Hallowe'en Express is a $5 add-on inside a much bigger night: more than 50 costumed characters, including the Headless Horseman and the Grim Reaper, lit jack-o'-lantern paths (over 1,000 pumpkins, per The Henry Ford's 2026 press release), live music, free carousel rides and a 1950s and 60s Hallowe'en Hop. The Henry Ford describes the train ride as "ghoulish and surprising," which is why we put it in the haunted group, but it also says the event is designed to delight visitors of all ages. Think mildly spooky, not a scream ride.

The hard part is getting in: general admission and Express tickets are sold out for 2026. Dining packages, which bundle admission with a timed Express ride, were still available on select evenings.

Brooklyn: Nite Lites Halloween Train Rides at Michigan International Speedway

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $10Dates left: Oct 15 to Oct 31

This is not a heritage railroad. It is a train ride with bench seats for four that rolls along the roughly 2-mile Halloween lighted path inside Michigan International Speedway, in open fall air. It runs at night, but the operator says the show is for all ages with no scary actors, so we list it with the pumpkin and costume rides. The train ticket is separate from the $30 per-car drive-thru, so you can ride without driving the show.

The operator's rules are worth reading before you go: the train is unheated, runs rain or shine, leaves on schedule, and tickets are non-refundable. Departure times and ride length are not posted, and Oct 24 is a walk-only night where it is unclear whether the train runs.

What Michigan Parents Should Know Before Buying Train Tickets

  • Two Michigan rides are already sold out: the Little River Railroad Pumpkin Train for all of 2026, and Greenfield Village general admission and Hallowe'en Express tickets. At Greenfield Village, dining packages on select evenings are the remaining way in, and walk-up Express seats are sold only if there is room.
  • At Crossroads Village, buy the $27 Combination ticket if your child wants the Ghost Train; the $17 Village Only ticket does not include it. If the online purchase fails, the parks department suggests trying a different browser.
  • Coopersville asks riders to arrive at least 30 minutes early and will not hold the train. Restrooms are in the station and on Coach and Premium cars but not in the caboose, and Car 5 has a lift and an accessible restroom (call ahead).
  • Greenfield Village parking is $10, and Smiths Creek Station is about a 30-minute walk from the lots, so leave early and arrive at the station 15 minutes before your slot. Missed trains are not guaranteed a later seat.
  • Nite Lites tickets are one per person, benches seat four, and there are no refunds. No coolers, alcohol, smoking or pets (service dogs are allowed).
  • None of the Michigan operators we checked post a stroller policy, so call ahead or plan on carrying little ones.
  • The Coopersville & Marne Oktoberfest Express and Greenfield Village's All Hallows Dinner are 21 and older, so they are not family options.

Michigan October Nights Run Near Freezing, and One Train Has No Heat

In Lower Michigan, October daytime highs usually land in the 50s to low 60s, and evenings drop into the 30s and 40s, with wind, rain and the chance of frost late in the month. The daytime trains in Coopersville and Coldwater are jacket weather. The evening events at Greenfield Village, Crossroads Village and Nite Lites get cold after dark, and the Nite Lites operator says its train is unheated, so dress kids in hats, gloves and a layer under the costume.

West Michigan near Lake Michigan, including Coopersville, tends to be breezier and cloudier than the Detroit side. The Coopersville coaches are heated, and the Little River Railroad says it heats its cars to the best of its ability and has no air conditioning. These are general climate norms, not a forecast, so check the weather the day before.

When a Three-Year-Old Hears "Headless Horseman" at Greenfield Village

Greenfield Village is the only Michigan ride we put in the haunted group, and even there The Henry Ford says the night is designed to delight visitors of all ages. The train ride itself is described as "ghoulish and surprising," and the village is full of characters like the Headless Horseman and the Grim Reaper. A child who startles easily may do better on an early 6:00 or 6:15 PM Express slot, and holders of those two slots may enter the village 30 minutes early.

For the gentlest Michigan day, the Coopersville Pumpkin Train is in daylight with a silly pumpkin show on board. Crossroads Village promises friendly ghosts, and on weekends you can go at noon and ride before dark. Nite Lites is dark, but the operator says there are no scary actors, only lights. With a nervous four-year-old, preview the plan: "It gets dark, the lights come on, and I am right next to you the whole time."

Watercolor view from inside a dark tunnel looking out at a sunny beach and cliffs
From Rally Takes the Train, watercolor by Leslie Dunn.

In our book, Rally's train rolls into a dark tunnel and he cannot see a thing. Then a big bright light appears, his big ears catch happy cheers, and Mom and Dad are right there with him. The Nite Lites train at Michigan International Speedway runs at night along a path of Halloween lights, so it has that same dark-then-bright shape. If your little one likes to know how it ends, read the tunnel page together first, or print our Rally coloring pages for the car ride.

My mom imagined this corgi long before I wrote him down, and you can read why I finished her book.

When Michigan Sells Out: Pumpkin Trains in Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin

Downriver and Monroe County families should look south. The closest pumpkin ride to Toledo is the Pumpkin Patch Motorcar Hayrides in Grand Rapids, Ohio, about 30 minutes past Toledo, and the quarter-scale Findlay trains, including a non-scary Halloween Express on Oct 31, are about 50 minutes from Toledo. Ohio has no haunted ride listed this year. Details are in our rundown of Ohio's pumpkin trains.

On the west side, families heading around the lake through Chicago can reach the Illinois Railway Museum's Pumpkin Train in Union, about 1 hour 15 minutes from the Loop, listed on our Illinois Halloween train page. Across Lake Michigan by ferry or a long drive, the East Troy Trick or Treat Trains are about 40 minutes from Milwaukee, and our Wisconsin pumpkin train list has the rest.

Rally’s Spooky Train Ride: Halloween shirts

The tunnel page from the book, Rally on his red seat in the dark, is printed on black shirts in sizes for the whole family, from baby to 5XL. A matching set makes for easy pumpkin train photos and an easy costume under a jacket. See everything in the Rally shop.

The $27 Combination ticket adds a 40-minute ride on the Huckleberry Ghost Train Express, while the $17 Village Only ticket skips the train. Remaining dates are Oct 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 25, 29 and 30, running until 9:00 PM. Train departure times have not been posted, so check the operator site.

What Halloween events are there for families in Dearborn, Michigan?

Dearborn's Halloween train is the Hallowe'en Express at Hallowe'en in Greenfield Village, a mildly spooky evening ride from Smiths Creek Station with characters like the Headless Horseman. The event runs 6:00 to 9:30 PM on Oct 15 to 18 and Oct 22 to 25, with more than 50 costumed characters and jack-o'-lantern paths. As of October 14, general admission and the $5 Express add-on are sold out, but dining packages with a timed ride remained on select evenings.

Are there any Halloween events in Brooklyn, Michigan for kids?

One family Halloween event in Brooklyn is the Nite Lites Halloween Train Rides at Michigan International Speedway, a night ride through a roughly 2-mile lighted Halloween path with no scary actors. Rides run Thursday through Sunday until Oct 31, and the lights are on from 8:00 to 10:00 PM. Tickets are $10 per person plus a card fee, separate from the $30 per-car drive-thru. The train is unheated, and whether it runs Oct 24 has not been posted, so check the operator site.

Do you get a pumpkin on the Coopersville or Coldwater Pumpkin Train in Michigan?

Not automatically on either one. The Coopersville & Marne Railway does not stop at a pumpkin patch or let riders off in Marne; instead each child gets a gift and candy, and Premium Class adds a pumpkin donut from Delly Belly bakery. On the Little River Railroad out of Coldwater, pumpkins and gourds are sold on the Quincy platform during the layover, cash only, though every remaining date of that ride is sold out.

What are Halloween events for kids near Detroit, Michigan?

The closest Halloween train to Detroit is the Hallowe'en Express at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, about 20 minutes away, though general admission is sold out as of October 14. About 1 hour north, Crossroads Village in Flint runs Ghosts & Goodies with the Huckleberry Ghost Train Express on select dates through Oct 30. The gentle Nite Lites Halloween train in Brooklyn, about 1 hour 15 minutes away, runs Thursday to Sunday nights through Oct 31.

Halloween things to do with kids near Grand Rapids, Michigan?

The Coopersville & Marne Pumpkin Train is about 25 minutes from Grand Rapids, a gentle daytime ride with an onboard pumpkin show on Oct 17, 18, 24 and 25. The Little River Railroad Pumpkin Train in Coldwater is about 1 hour 30 minutes away but sold out. For an evening outing, Crossroads Village in Flint and the Nite Lites train in Brooklyn are each about 1 hour 50 minutes away, with dates running through late October.

Where can kids ride a Halloween train near Lansing, Michigan?

From Lansing, two Halloween trains are about 1 hour away. The Nite Lites train in Brooklyn rolls through a lighted Halloween path Thursday to Sunday nights through Oct 31, and Crossroads Village in Flint pairs trick-or-treating with the Huckleberry Ghost Train Express through Oct 30. The daytime Coopersville Pumpkin Train is about 1 hour 15 minutes away on Oct 17, 18, 24 and 25, and Greenfield Village in Dearborn is about 1 hour 30 minutes away.

Can my kids wear their Halloween costumes on the Coopersville Pumpkin Train?

Yes, the Coopersville & Marne Railway encourages it. The railway says it wants kids, and parents too, to wear Halloween costumes for extra fun. The coaches are heated, so a costume without a heavy coat usually works on board. If you also go to Greenfield Village, costumes are welcome there, but swords, sharp instruments and pretend weapons are not allowed.

Is the Hallowe'en Express at Greenfield Village too scary for my 3 year old?

Probably not, though it is the spookiest train in Michigan this year. The Henry Ford says the event is designed to delight visitors of all ages, but it calls the train ride ghoulish and surprising, and characters include the Headless Horseman and the Grim Reaper. The event runs after dark, from 6:00 to 9:30 PM. An early 6:00 or 6:15 PM Express slot keeps the night shorter for a sensitive child.

Can we still get Michigan Halloween train tickets for this weekend?

Some, but not everywhere. As of October 14, Coopersville showed bookable Pumpkin Train runs on Oct 17 at 1:00 and 3:30 PM and Oct 18 at 3:30 PM. Crossroads Village listed no sold-out dates, and Nite Lites noted limited seating. The Little River Railroad Pumpkin Train is sold out, and Greenfield Village had only dining packages on select evenings.

Is the Huckleberry Ghost Train included with a Ghosts and Goodies ticket?

Only if you buy the Combination ticket. Crossroads Village sells a $17 Village Only ticket that covers the treat stops, straw maze, magic show and cider and doughnuts, and a $27 Combination ticket that adds the 40-minute Huckleberry Ghost Train Express ride. Children 12 months and under are free. The parks department says trains sell out quickly.

Are the Halloween trains in Michigan heated when it gets cold at night?

Some are and some are not. The Coopersville Pumpkin Train coaches are heated. The Little River Railroad says it heats its cars to the best of its ability. The Nite Lites train at Michigan International Speedway is unheated, and its operator tells riders to dress warm. With October evenings in the 30s and 40s, bring hats and gloves for any night ride.

Does my baby need a ticket for the Coopersville Pumpkin Train?

Not if your baby is under 1 and rides on your lap. The Coopersville & Marne Railway lets children under 1 ride free on a parent's lap without a seat. From age 1 through 12, a child ticket is $30 in Coach or $40 in Premium Class. If you want your baby to have a seat, book a child ticket.

How long is the walk to the Hallowe'en Express train at Greenfield Village?

Plan on roughly 30 minutes on foot. The Hallowe'en Express leaves from Smiths Creek Station inside Greenfield Village, and The Henry Ford says the walk from the West and East parking lots takes about that long. Guests holding 6:00 or 6:15 PM Express tickets may enter 30 minutes early. Reach the station 15 minutes before your slot, since missed trains are not guaranteed a later seat. No stroller policy has been posted, so check the operator site.
