Christmas Train Rides in Michigan (2026)

Michigan has no licensed Polar Express ride, which is funny, because it has the engine. Pere Marquette 1225, the steam locomotive whose plans were used as the model for the train in the 2004 movie, lives in Owosso and pulls the state’s biggest Christmas train. For the licensed story in other states, see our Christmas train map.

This is the one Michigan train fans dream about. The Steam Railroading Institute runs Pere Marquette 1225, a 1941 Lima steam engine whose drawings the moviemakers used for the train in The Polar Express, north to the village of Ashley for a two-hour Country Christmas party with Santa, then back to Owosso. Everyone gets a souvenir ticket and a Believe bell. The institute keeps the right to use a diesel if the steam engine is down.

The 2026 season shows as sold out, which is typical: tickets go on sale in the spring. Watch the institute’s own website, the only place it sells tickets, for returns. The cars are historic and not ADA accessible, there is no concession car, and the diners have no restroom.

West Michigan’s Santa train runs out of Coopersville, about 20 minutes west of Grand Rapids, in passenger cars more than a hundred years old. Santa has his own reserved seat on the train, and elves walk each child up to see him one at a time, so you get a real photo and every child gets a gift. Elves, and sometimes Mrs. Claus, read stories along the 90-minute ride.

Coaches are heated and each has a restroom, which matters on a long ride with small kids. Premium seats are at tables of four with cocoa and a cookie from a local bakery. Buy tickets at the office on Main Street or online, then board at the platform on Danforth Street 30 minutes before departure.

During Christmas at Crossroads the whole village is lit up on select nights from November 27 to December 27, Santa is on the grounds, and you can ride the train through the evening. The park celebrates its fiftieth year in 2026.

Buy the ticket that includes the train if that is what your kids are coming for; village-only tickets just let you walk the lights. Some nights in December are drive-through only, at $10 a carload, with no train ride, so check the calendar before you go.

Between Ann Arbor and Adrian, the Southern Michigan Railroad Society runs a short Santa Express that suits little kids perfectly: about 15 minutes on the train each way, with a 45-minute stop at Clinton Station where Santa waits in his caboose. Every child gets a gift, and the elves hand out free cocoa in the gift shop.

You ride in an old South Shore commuter coach or a New York Central caboose, and families can book a private caboose for up to 8 or 10. The train has only small propane heaters and no restroom, and you will be outside on the platform, so dress for a Michigan December.

Too excited to sleep: the night before a Michigan Christmas train ride.

Is the Owosso train the Polar Express?

No, though it is the closest thing to it. The Steam Railroading Institute does not run the licensed Polar Express; its North Pole Express goes to Ashley’s Country Christmas instead of following the book. The connection is the engine: the moviemakers used the 1225’s blueprints and recorded its sounds.

When to buy

Owosso goes on sale in the spring and sells out. Coopersville and Coldwater sell through the fall, and Crossroads tickets are easiest to get.

Getting there by train

Amtrak’s Blue Water stops in Durand, about 15 minutes from Owosso, and in Flint; see our Blue Water with kids guide. Grand Rapids is the end of the line for the Pere Marquette, covered on our Pere Marquette with kids page.
